Why didn't they teach us how to build boats in elementary school?

In the past few months, students at Resurrection School and Our Lady of Czestochowa School have planned, built, and launched their very own boats in the Hudson River.

This is a fantastic idea. As the article points out building a boat as a team teaches math, science, teamwork, and self esteem. The math and science show up in practical applications of something fun and we feel can further learning. Yes, these 7th and 8th graders (referred to as Middle Schoolers where Johnny comes from) actually got to get into the boats and row them on the Hudson River. That's not just learning, that's fun.

The program went so well the two schools are planning more joint projects.

So, where are you sitting for the Macy's fireworks?

Do you have a favorite or secret spot? Tell us.

Johnny's gotta run to Pennsylvania and pick up the goods later today, he's just that kind of rulebreaker. It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission applies especially to bottle rockets.

All aboard the love bus

Well, we should qualify that headline with 'You missed your chance to get on the love bus'. Edward Meehan a FORMER MTA express bus driver was using his express bus to drive over to Staten Island after his shift to enjoy time with his lady friend. After his encounters he would actually bill MTA for overtime claiming he was stuck in traffic on the way back. Nice.

The New York Daily News points out:

Meehan - who had racked up 14 suspensions for speeding, running red lights and other infractions - was suspended for the 15th time last week for the unauthorized get-togethers, authorities said.

In firing Meehan the arbitrator had this to say:

Edward Meehan engaged in "outrageous behavior" by parking his bus on a Staten Island side street for three onboard get-togethers with the woman, arbitrator Martin Scheinman said in a written decision handed down on Friday.

So until another public transportation worker decides to make the love bus live and breathe again, you'll simply just have to be taken to your destination. Knowing the state of public transportation in NYC, that wait might not be as long as you think.

There's a lot one needs to look out for living in the big city...

Well you can add another thing to be on the lookout for, skanky gypsies looking to part you from your money.

An elderly Brooklyn man was taken for 300K in a gold coin scam and was about to give the gypsy skanks (go to the link and decide for yourself if the headline instead of 'Foxy Duo' should read 'wharf rats') another 450K when one claimed she needed a new kidney (They're cheaper than 450K on Amazon) and it's at that point 'Vincent' was wised up by his friends this was nothing more than a gypsy scam. Reeva Johnson and Holly Mitchell were arrested and face 37 years in prison. Both wharf rats are married to brothers in a gypsy clan police said. The victim, Vincent said the scam began when he was locked onto by Johnson who would somehow just magically appear when he was out shopping.

Lesson here, if you have a senior in your family who you suspect may need money mangement help or they give clues to paying people to do things that don't need doing or you notice a sudden change in their finances, look into it and of need be call the cops.

Don't feed the wharf rats.

O'Hara's Downtown, maybe you should go clean up after yourselves this morning

Johnny was out and about yesterday and wandered over to the 'Not Your Mama's Craft Show' at the Morgan lot at Warren and Morgan. Hundreds if not thousands of happy people just listening to music and getting their crafts on. Later, as Johnny was walking back home he began to notice DOZENS of pink flyers blowing through the Powerhouse Arts District. Not just one or two that could have carelessly been tossed by people who don't want giant pink flyers under their windshield wipers, but dozens just blowing like trash against fences, under cars, through open lots etc.

All these pink flyers were advertising O'Hara's Downtown. Hey, O'Hara's, don't you have a better way to advertise than dumping flyers on cars and in the streets? Again, there were far too many flyers lying about to say it was all disgruntled car owners tossing them. Whomever you hired (If you didn't have your own employees do this) did an atrocious job of 'advertising'. We think someone from O'Hara's owes the PAD an apology for this littering. O'Hara's really should send a cleanup crew around this morning.

We just wanted you all here in Jersey City to know which businesses actually take care of the city they do business in.

A hearty congratulations to the New York State Senate for voting FOR gay marriage in Albany tonight. You are on the right side of history and it's refreshing to see elected officials for a change stand on principle for what is right rather than politically expedient. Governor Cuomo immediately signed the bill into law and gay marriages can begin in 30 days.

Oh, and the same right wing Christian lobby that has spent the better part of the last 10 years trying to blur the line on the separation of church and state sure showed their forked tongues in all this. When it comes to teaching intelligent design and trying to put creationism on the same plane of fact as evolution in public schools they have no use for the separation of church and state and often loudly pretend it doesn't exist in any form. But they sure were FOR the old separation of church and state when they lobbied hard to insist the law in no way required Christian clergy to marry gay couples. Huh, ya don't say. Sounds like they want to have their straight wedding cake and eat it to.

Well done New York, hopefully New Jersey will follow your lead.

Johnny doesn't pontificate too much on orders of politics as he does try to be fair to all readers, within reason. At this late hour he'd like to point out to the one or two Republican state senators in New York trying to decide to vote for the proposal therefore making gay marriage legal in The Empire State. Do not let the Bible trump the freedoms of this republic spelled out in the Declaration of Independence. American soldiers have bravely defended our shared independence and freedom and the Constitution in war, not the Bible. Voting FOR this simple right will put you on the right side of history and your name will be proudly remembered in history.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with CARLY SIMON!

We get to answer yet another question that festers in rock and roll trivia purgatory. It's legend -- the question over who the Carly Simon song 'You're So Vain' is about, Mick Jagger (Who sings backup on that particular song) or Warren Beatty. Johnny can't answer THAT question but he CAN tell you the song 'Nobody Does it Better' was indeed written about Johnny and his mutual influence on Carly and hers on him from their brief but intense creative period together way back in 1977. The song then got played in a movie and the true meaning was lost to history until now.

A great article by the Jersey Journal on the recent and fairly surprising results in the Jersey City Democratic Organization elections. Tennessee Titan and Bayonne's own Kenny Britt has had a busy week

Kenny has a lot of time on his hands while being locked out by the NFL owners (and greedy bastards they be). So much time in fact it seems Kenny celebrated his plea deal on Tuesday for careless driving regarding an incident in April that involved a chase (Britt sped away from police in his 90K Porsche and when police caught up he walked away from the car at first claiming it wasn't his despite the Tennessee Titans license plates) by getting popped in Hoboken on Wednesday for among other things tampering with evidence, obstructing a government function and resisting arrest. This stems from what police say was an attempt to hide and then destroy a crushed a cigar containing marijuana (we'll go with the hipper phrase 'blunt' here) after being confronted by FuHo PD. This is the 5th time in the last two years Kenny Britt has had police contact of some kind. While his teammates were down in Tennessee trying to hold workouts on their own Britt had better things to do with his time.

Sounds like Cory Booker has his eyes on something bigger than Newark

A federal political action committee known as CoryPAC has been formed in Newark, named after Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Those in the know say the funds raised now through the 2012 election will be used to help Democratic candidates for office. After 2012 however the stakes get raised. Senator Frank Lautenberg will be over 90 by the time his next term expires in 2014. Guess who's mayoral incumbency ends around then? Cory Booker.

The Jersey City Desk genuinely likes Mr. Booker. He's a hard worker who really lacks only the finds for a Newark turnaround. He's open, he's honest and he's very accessible. You can tell Booker really means what he says and cares quite a bit about his city. Are things in Newark great? No, far from it BUT it doesn't mean Booker hasn't done a lot of good things for the city.

We'd like to see Booker run for Senate. He'd be a strong candidate that's for sure...

So why does it smell different on the PATH as opposed to the NY Subway?

The New York Times (yes it's OK to burn one of your free stories per month on this one) takes a look at just what THAT smell on the PATH is that the MTA Subway doesn't seem to have. Maybe you have an idea about it even before you read the article. Maybe not but either way there is a distinct difference and it's both fun and maddening to try and figure it out:

There comes a moment for riders of the PATH train, a shared, unspoken experience when the air is pierced by a distinct odor.

Sometimes it hits while descending from the street to the station. Sometimes it strikes inside the train. Then just when the nose adjusts, another distinctive smell emerges as the train goes beneath the Hudson River.

But, because Mrs. Johnny enjoys the show Chopped on whatever network that's on Johnny is well aware of the show and it's ridiculous premise. Know what Johnny would do? He'd go in EXPECTING to have the worst dish in the first round. H'd know he was done when he got up that morning. It would be soooo very worth it just to make the judges sample, on national television the worst dish ever made. You're selling more than just a car, you're selling a hideous butt-dumpling of a car. Johnny thinks he'd rather take his chances in the Pinto than be seen in one of these failwagons. However did AMC not survive?

1970's car ads night for all the motorheads and their patron saint Elwood Blues.

Johnny's NSA-like 'Listening Station of Doom' to become operational later today

Be ye warned good people of Jersey City, New York City and all the surrounding areas, Johnny's master plan to hear all and know all, the feared 'Listening Station of Doom' (That's just good marketing, soon lots of bloggers will want in on the franchise) will go live later today. No entity will be able to escape it's power, not the sworn protectors of the cities or government agencies.

It's part Death Star and part Great Eye of Sauron and cost millions of no intern annual cost of living raises, and it has come to Jersey City...

Anybody get a menu from this new Chinese restaurant on their windshield?

Johnny's seen these menus all over town for a joint called The Mangy Panda. What do you think Jersey City? What's the worst that could happen?

Tornado Watch for Hudson County and the surround until 8pm

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the Jersey City Desk viewing area. It's time to take these watches and warnings more seriously citizens, there's something just not right with the weather this year.

The Jersey City FD, none finer

If you see a Jersey City firefighter give 'em the glad hand or just say thanks and understand the dangerous jobs they have. 14 Jersey City firemen were hospitalized in fighting a fire on Monday on Harmon St. Injuries from burns to back injuries to heat exhaustion were encountered. Thankfully they have all been released.

Jersey City had a visit last night and today from a certain overhyped political gadfly who if she had her way would disband the unions that represent these under appreciated heroes. Gee that'd be a stupid idea. These are the guys that are going to come save your life when the world comes crashing down, not Sarah Palin.

A tip of the Jersey City Desk cap to some of Jersey City's finest public servants.
