Late night open thread

On August 17, 1957 Alice Roth was one of 7,929 Phillies fans who were at old Connie Mack Stadium for a game against the New York Giants. Phils manager Mayo Smith (who would go on to manage the Detroit Tigers to the 1968 World Series title) penciled in Richie Ashburn into the leadoff spot and had him playing centerfield. At some point, Richie Ashburn fouled off a pitch that struck Ms. Roth right in the nose, breaking it. Anyone who has been to a sporting event and seen a fan get nicked by a foul ball or loose puck knows the game goes on while repairs are made to the fan. Now you know Johnny well enough to know he'd never post something and leave it at fan gets hit by foul ball. That's too easy. During that same at bat Ashburn fouled off yet another pitch.

Mmmmm hmmmmmm, Alice Roth got it again as she was being stretchered out of Connie Mack Stadium. Ashburn's second foul ball broke a bone in Roth's leg. The lesson here? If you ever get a time machine and feel you need to go back and see the Phillies and Giants game 8/17/57, stay the hell away from Alice Roth.
