Jets and Giants football GAMEDAY!

What a glorious morning out there today Jersey City, perfect for getting in brunches, dog walks, the Sixth Borough Market at the corner of Bay St. and Marin, the last outdoor market of the year, and any projects you may have. Again, a great day for getting those Christmas lights up in October. You'll wish you had this day back in late November. What's a month between friend anyway?

OK, football and nowhere is football less appetizing than in Cleveland today, where the weather will be awful and the teams stinky. The Jets roll in with a cool two victories while Johnny's Browns have NO WINS and Johnny sure hopes that keeps up today. The Jets stink, let's face facts. BUT with a third win today they move three games up (really four with head-to-head tiebreakers) on the Browns for that tasty first overall draft pick in April. Honestly today nobody in Cleveland, with the Indians on the brink of a World Series title vs the Cubs tonight and with the Cavaliers title in June, NOBODY FUCKING CARES if the Brownies lose 47-0, the coach up and quits and the fans riot. Today would be a perfect day for the Jets to roll in, play fundamentally sound football, don't turn it over and go home with a win.

Of course it's never that easy. While we're not sure who the Browns BQ will be today on the Wheel-O-Starters, might be Tim Couch, Brady Quinn or Jeff Garcia. Might be Josh McCown or might be Terrell Pryor. The fact it it does not matter. If the Jets can do any kind of job stopping the Browns on the ground, they stand a great chance. If they can run, and trust Johnny when he tells you this, there are good high school teams who can run on the Browns, the Jets should stand a great chance. Not that Jets fans shouldn't watch today, the Cleveland 11 comes up with stupid and unique ways to loose weekly but the Fearless Forecast says go to a cider mill today.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JOY DIVISION!

Kicking things off tonight with the iconic sound of Joy Division and the dark mega-hit, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. No, Johnny's not gonna yammer on, just gonna jump right in with music. Cause it's the Music Series. No talking, just to talk, nossir, just music.

Usually.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FATS DOMINO!

Who doesn't need a little snappy, catchy piano? Wrong, everyone does. A little something from the jukebox at the coffee shop in Back to the Future, the one George McFly was told to stay out of, Fats Domino and 'My Blue Heaven' which as a side note was a 'B' side release. That'd be an interesting list, the biggest hits that were 'B' sides.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with BESSIE SMITH!

1925, that's right, this recording, 'I Ain't Got Nobody' was recorded by jazz legend Bessie Smith in 1925. You'll also notice the basic structure of this song, one David Lee Roth would famously cover, carried through very very much to his version. So here it is, the original cut and you can hear Diamond Dave if you try real hard.

Nice to see Grove St Bicycles get a permanent new home

The good folks at Grove St. Bikes, chased out of their Grove St addy by a fire earlier this year and had been doing business behind Morlees, have a new home, 172 Christopher Columbus. In Jersey City terms they will be kitty-corner from Wonder Bagels on Columbus.

We really like these guys. Honest as the day is long, helpful and really great ambassadors of our fair city. Good news for them, and us!

A West Side restaurant row? An art community around Loew's? People are talking

Two ideas to build on momentum around Jersey City are being discussed at the highest levels; a possible art community/art friendly area around Loew's on Journal Square is an almost done deal and should be approved in a city council meeting tomorrow, two high rises with a lot of art spaces and art-doings behind the Loew's now, currently the home to parking lots and unused land. Johnny likes this idea. It helps let Loew's anchor a neighborhood, a great sign if spaces are building in around it. This is also the exact spot a ten year abatement would be a great idea, enough to get it done but not a budget buster. More on the idea here.

A West Side restaurant row is being proposed in new zoning that will also go in front of city council Tuesday and while the pieces aren't as far along as the Journal Square plan, it would allow for further plans to be drawn up and so far everyone is on board:

The 14 blocks where zoning requirements will be amended under the plan fall between Montgomery and Claremont streets. In addition to support from Fulop, the proposal has also earned the endorsement of the West Side Community Alliance.

"WSCA strongly supports this first step in an eventual restaurant row," said Jodi Drennan, President of the West Side Community Alliance. "As Jersey City's most diverse community, the possibility for great restaurants is really exciting. We have the best housing, the most beautiful park, and we look forward to boasting the City's best restaurants!"

More on the West Side restaurant row plan here.

Great ideas both.

Getting heated in Hoboken

A story by our old friend Grafix Avenger up to FuHo over some slimy board of education election tactics and even uglier humans caught Johnny's eye and he wanted to share it. Imagine here in Jersey City if during a debate or open forum for school board or board of education one side decided to thug things up and have a dongbeaver hold a flash on a camera phone open while the side he's told he doesn't like is talking, trying to blind or distract them, then shuts it off when the other side talks. That's just one off-putting tactics which can be seen in images quite clearly. Grafix Avenger and commenters discuss more. Here's the link to the top of her site, just read down and be prepared to shake your head in disgust at how some people think local elections should be run.

Jets football GAMEDAY!

Johnny loves scheduling quirks and we sure have one at the New Meadowlands today. The Baltimore Ravens make a second trip to Jersey in back-to-back weeks, last week vs the Giants and this week vs the woeful Jets. Last week the Giants beat the Ravens 16-10 after which Odell Beckham Jr. had sex with a kicking net. This week we think, though they have lost three in a row, the Ravens should be favorites.

Sure, there are signs that this is one of those games the Jets rise up, score 31 points and get a special teams TD or a huge day from someone, seemingly every NFL team has one of these games a year where it all comes together. The Baltisnores have only scored four more points than the Browns for heavens sake. Surely the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets can do something there to take advantage. Their defense hasn't been great but this offense they are playing today is middling at best. Middling with a really good QB who could suddenly take advantage of a bad Jets D whereas the chances of the Jets QB (Geno Smith at press time) suddenly coming up big and thrashing an average Ravens defense are much less.

The Jets are smelly and the Ravens less so. Trust us, nobody wants the Jets to start winning games than Johnny. They are in danger of somehow taking Johnny's Browns' #1 overall pick. The Brownies are 0-6 and the Jets 1-5. Too close for comfort, the Jets and anyone else with one or two wins needs to win today and certainly the next couple weeks. The Browns have worked too hard at being this bad and that #1 pick is theirs. Therefore:

London game, PU. Does ANYONE enjoy these things? It's practically punishment to the teams forced to travel and play what we consider way too early. In fact, Johnny is trying to write this moments before fucking kickoff...

The Rams are nothing special but neither this year are the Giants. They have just enough to stay in the division race but one gets the feeling one or two more bad losses and that chase is over. Today is a real mental test, not just the travel but the absolute intensity of the Josh Brown domestic abuse story in which the Giants and the league come off looking absolutely stupid. Thunderstruck. Hit with a shovel. When you do a terrible job on this topic, one you the NFL has said is important to you and you do nothing when you find out a guy is beating his wife regularly and it's all covered up, yeah, that's awful. So, do the Giants have the mental toughness to take their longest road trip ever and beat a team with nothing to lose in LA?

Both teams are in London because they're middling as New England and Denver don't play overseas do they?

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with GRAHAM PARKER AND THE RUMOUR!

Johnny loves pointing out irony. Even when it's his own fail as part of that self-deprecation folks say is good when one tells stories. Johnny went to see this band, Graham Parker and the Rumour touring behind their surprise hit album Squeezing Out Sparks at the Flint IMA Arena with a gal Johnny was really into and whom he wanted to be his girlfriend. If Johnny was going to be the young punk he thought he was, being all cool holding Kelly's hand and cuddling in the seats, that ended but quickly in matching 'Beat Oxford' t-shirts when Journey came onstage. It's hard to get excited about this song, 'Local Girls' with it's very anti local girl stance with a local girl on your arm in matching shirts waiting for goddamned Journey to come on.

Oh, and Johnny's dad insisted on driving that night because though Johnny was just a sophomore and had a permit and Kelly had her license being one year older and said she'd drive but no dice. Johnny's dad still insisted. Bzzzzzzt. That gets no girls. Goodbye Kelly, hello heartache.

The JCPD took officers off active duty to stand around construction sites, no REALLY

How about that, no burying the lead on this one. The Jersey City Police Department felt it was actually OK to pull active duty police, ie they were cruising around the city trying to prevent crime....until they got a call to pull them off actual duty and go stand around a construction site. Who the fuck thinks this is EVER OK?

Backstory, Terrence T. Mc Donald, take it away:

Eight police officers tasked with distributing off-duty jobs to cops — called pick masters or job coordinators — were abruptly stripped of that power last week, according to law-enforcement sources who asked not to be identified discussing personnel matters. The change led the administration to pull officers off patrol to cover off-duty jobs that had gone unfilled, the sources said.

See that people, see how important you are in the eyes of the JCPD administration? Not at all, you're not important to the JCPD in any way shape or form or this wouldn't have happened. Who the fuck made such an asinine decision? Why do they still have a job (oh right, police unions).

Johnny has been ranting and raving about this utter waste of JCPD resources for years. He's written letters to Steve Fulop (Who actually agreed with Johnny you'll recall, when he was running for mayor Steve Fulop too said the police standing around construction sites should be ended with volunteers -- until he won the election then nothing from Fulop), Candice Osborne, the usual channels. When nothing there happened he's taken to the Jersey City Desk to point out what an absurdity it is this is allowed to continue, and now the JCPD has a scandal over it break wide-open. An embarrassing scandal where we find out, yeah, they actually pulled cops from street duty to do nothing for developers.

Johnny has tried people, he'll keep trying. He'll keep posting pics of cops doing nothing, playing on their phones, sitting down and of course, sleeping in their fucking cars until things change. It'll be a hard fight against greedy cops who would rather line their pockets than serve and protect.

SHAME ON THE JCPD. A house cleaning is now in order, beyond pick masters.
(Jersey City Desk file photo of a JCPD officer sleeping while on construction site "duty")

No, the elections are not rigged

Today, the people who run the elections in New Jersey and elsewhere across the country have had to defend their honor, despite a severe lack of voter fraud across America over decades because Donald J. Trump is getting his ass kicked. Trump and his two stooge sons and son in law Jared Kushner could not formulate a winning team or plan to run a campaign for the American presidency. They were woefully uninformed, made poor decisions and failed on a giant stage. But, you know this crew it has to be fixed. Somebody has to cheat this Cheeto-faced dongbeaver because he simply couldn't be the most ill-prepared candidate in history to draw breath, for him to lose somebody HAD to be cheating.

It's impossible to throw an election as the president said today as it's just far too decentralized. The people who have run and currently run the state of new Jersey elections shouldn't have had to defend themselves, shame on you Donald Trump.

A PSE&G bill scam with an added layer of sophistication needs addressing

Scammers calling to try and bilk you out of money shouldn't surprise anyone. Usually the scammers are very bad at their job and one can easily tell the call is bullshit. Sometimes they do hit someone who either doesn't understand the runaround or is just too trusting. Johnny would hate to think of a smooth talker calling his elderly mother and trying to scare and confuse her.

A new scam where a PSE&G customer is called and along with the obvious things that are listed with a phone number, this time the scammers knew the due date of the bill of the customer to gain trust and bilked a local auto repair shop out of serious money. A lot more including a somewhat brushy offy comment about what PSE&G about how someone might get a customer's billing due date.

Please go read the article, if not for you then maybe a relative or just someone you know who can be intimidated by scary talk over a phone line.

Giants and Jet--er, Giants football Gameday!

The Jets are off until Monday, screw them.

The Giants are home today, all alone in last place in the NFC East where Philly and Dallas don't look so shitty after all. IF the Giants are to make any kid of charge and move up the standings, it HAS to start today. The Ravens are in town and they just fired their offensive coordinator so Joe Flacco will be going through a new offense at the New Meadowlands today. The Giants have to make a stand and they get a 3-2 team to try with. The G-Men are slight favorites but the way things have gone one gets the feeling they'd actually feel better about things being an underdog today.

Eli Manning and Flacco are both Super Bowl winning QB's who are off to terrible starts. Both have thrown for 5 TD's and 4 INTs. Not really Super Bowl stats BUT the Ravens did get a game vs Cleveland in already so that probably helps Flacco's numbers. As you can see from the team stats below, these teams on paper are pretty even-Steven:

Two even teams but the Giants are at home and it is a glorious fall day so there will be no weather issues. Big Blue HAS to win this game today if they want to keep pace in the division.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JULIAN COPE!

Did you know then, Cope, besides being a musician has also written four non-fiction books. Johnny's not sure if Jersey City Desk intern Kiki has read four non-fiction books in well, ever.

Johnny would imagine if you write non-fiction books you have quite a sharp mind and overflowing vocabulary, this song, 'World Shut Your Mouth' does seem a bit pedestrian as a title. Still, it's a great song from 1987.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ENGLISH BEAT!

Johnny's always been a big fan of this song by English Beat, 'Save It for Later' from 1982. He was pretty positive on that second British invasion starting with the Clash and Sex Pistols era of the late 70's and by the early 80's the English Beat were a staple on Johnny's turntable.

You know who does an AMAZING cover of this song? Pete Townshend. We'll save that for later...

You have to love Loew's

What a grand building and shame on our mayor for behaving like a ten year old in a tantrum over the way he treats it. It must be saved, preserved and in local, caring hands.

Word Bookstore continues a string of great guests brought to Jersey City including Stephen King, Amy Schumer and last night Bryan Cranston.

First off, if you are a fan, he is one of the most delightful, sincere and funny guys Johnny has ever seen give one of these talks. In the Q & A afterwards there were questions from the crowd and some from actors. He spent maybe TEN minutes each answering young actors questions with what, if Johnny were an actor, he'd have appreciated. He's kind of an everyman as explained in his new book, A Life in Parts. He didn't just set out to be an actor, he's had several regular guy jobs which may help ground him. You'll find out in his book he was even a murder suspect for a while (he didn't talk about it other than to bring it up, then he tapped the book LOL).

Couple things -- Johnny has not watched Breaking Bad so if you have he hopes he's relaying a couple stories correctly. #1 the hardest scene he said he ever ever did and it messed with him for a few days was a scene where a young lady was having an heroin OD on a bed and Walt was watching it all unfold and he said for about 5 seconds he could picture his own daughter, about that age, in that situation. Not that his daughter did drugs but that's SOMEBODY'S daughter and as a father he saw her as his for a quick moment and said it put the zap on him.

The pizza on the roof scene. He told them there was no way he was getting it on the roof (They had one pizza) so they told him to do what he could. He said it wasn't like a regular pizza either, it was a super large pizza and he never thought it would land on the roof. NOW, that being said and fanbases being fanbases you can imagine what STILL happens to the house in Albuquerque New Mexico, people film themselves throwing pizzas on the roof. The couple who owns that house is older (they didn't tell them what EXACTLY the show was about) but they can't go up on ladder everyday to pull down last night's pizza. So it sits. And sits. And rats come. The city has been working on a solution about putting a security guard outside because the neighbors, they do complain.

Such a wonderful evening all around. Thanks Loew's and thanks Word!

What a Studio Tour weekend!

Oh the hell with the rain, art fans care nothing for rain, baseball fans care about rain. From what Johnny was able to see downtown, in PAD and around Harsimus Cove the art scene in Jersey City is strong and getting stronger. Make no mistake, the new gallery at Modera and with all the associated artist space (look someone really lives up to their commitment to the Powerhouse ARTS District along with 140 and 150 Bay St., talking to you The One and The Morgan) has already and will continue to bring the focus of art back to the PAD. Johnny was actually privy to a discussion between artists and curators of an idea someone had to create a monthly art walk or studio and gallery art crawl on one Friday a month. Those on hand were also very adamant the city would be kept out of planning and implementation after the Monopoly board debacle (Where is your credibility now city hall?). Great idea and more than likely a better idea to keep the city at arm's length.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with LOS LOBOS!

Kicking things off tonight on this Art and Studio tour weekend all over this great city how about a sultry, swingy, spooky song from Los Lobos, 'Kiko and the Lavender Moon'

Johnny thinks you'll approve Jersey City...of the song, the video, well, smoke 'em if ya got 'em we suppose.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with BUDDY HOLLY!

A real treat tonight kids, this track, 'Well....All Right' is played here on an old 78 rpm record player. You can hear the scratches and little pops as your, christ, grandparents would have listened to it on.

History and a really great song.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE PRETENDERS!

Go ahead Donald Trump, go walk up to Chrissie Hynde and grab her pussy, go ahead, you're famous, you said you can do it. Walk right up, reach out your hand, and get your teeth knocked out and your throat stepped on.

Update on the NJ Transit train wreck in Hoboken

The NTSB is now reporting the train that hit Lackawanna Station, killing one woman, was going nearly double the speed limit. Hope you like story problems in school Billy:

The commuter train accelerated from 8 mph about 38 seconds before the crash, which killed one person and injured more than 100 others. The throttle had been in the idle position but moved to a No. 4 position as the train accelerated. Just before the crash, the throttle returned to the idle position and the engineer tried emergency breaking procedures.

Um, what is, uh, er, 45? What? No recess? Goddammit. For those scoring at home the correct answer was 21, the train was going 21mph.

A good read with more information and more on automatic speed control.

Art and Studio Tour this weekend!

One of the city's best events, and certainly most popular is this weekend when the Art and Studio Tour returns for a 26th triumphant year. Johnny has become very immersed in the JC arts scene, actually now hanging with artists at parties and quietly and politely nodding his head when they discuss art because Johnny's best artwork was the one time he really nailed the pirate in the back of the TV Guide "Can You Draw Me" section. Artists throughout the PAD and Harsimus Cove and all over downtown have really been kind in giving background to this city's rich art history to a noob.

Pssst, there's even a chance Johnny and the mayor will be rubbing elbows at an event or two this weekend. Relax, it's about the great work of our artists, nothing more.

You can get all the info with all the artists all over Jersey City and where they can be found Saturday and Sunday. Truly a gem in our city's crown.

Mathews Food and Drink to open tomorrow

Grove St. will get another restaurant tomorrow as it slots in at the site of the old La Conguita restaurant, gone now over a year. Mathews Food and Drink will open after many rumored beginnings it did look ready to take on customers tonight.

Looking forward to trying it. We'll see what magic the White Star owners can work at this new site.

It's a little heavy on the woe is Steve Fulop, but an excellent look at why he's not running for governor

Winner, longest headline.

Max Pizarro with PolitickerNJ has a great and in-depth article on exactly why Steve Fulop made such an about-face on running for Governor and deciding to throw his support to Phil Murphy and who exactly Fulop pissed off when he did make this choice. It's a good read and you should click here right away and commence to reading.

As a side note, Johnny wonders if today's Bridgegate bleeding into a possible Urban League Donation-Gate also might have had something to do with Fulop aborting liftoff.

Late night open thread

Gotta love preseason anything, it's the time to work out the bugs. Take tonight for instance, the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars both showed up to the rink with only their white jerseys...and played that way.

Jets and Giants GAMEDAY!

The Jets, coming off a really bad road effort in Kansas City last week come home for a 1pm kickoff in the new Meadowlands vs the Seattles and their annoying bandwagon fans. Johnny doesn't need much analysis time on this one. The Jets can't move the ball and Seattle is good at stopping teams who can't move the ball....like the Jets. Those willing to head over to East Rutherford today and dodge rain showers on this dreary Sunday should get a special sticker or pin.

The Giants don't play today, they play tomorrow in Minnesota. The Giants laid one BIG egg in the 4th quarter last week vs the Redskin Potatoes, so bad they had to fumigate the field before the Jets played today. The Vikings are a surprising 3-0. This is one of those road games at the beginning of the year when you make the predictions based on game-by-game W's and L's you'd have given Big Blue a W and simply moved on. Not that easy, in fact Johnny doesn't think it will be a W at all. The Vikings have no injured players, and their defense is allowing only 13 points a game. Only if the Giants can go play-action and have big games from two receivers will they win this on the road. Trouble is the Vikes are almost as stout against the run as Big Blue. Hard to win on the road in the NFL...
