New Jersey City University headed to the NCAA Division III big dance

The New Jersey City University Gothic Knights, a cool 19-9 on the season defeated Montclair State University 72-67 and clinched the New Jersey Athletic Conference crown. Thursday NJCU will find out who they'll play in the opening round of the Divison III tournament.

A tip of the Jersey City Desk cap to coach Marc Brown and the Gothic Knights.

It's Oscar Sunday

And good readers we'd love to know some of YOUR favorite movies that may or may not have won the Best Picture Academy Award, some of your favorite actors and actresses and maybe you'd like to share some of your most hated Oscar snubs. Johnny will start that category off by wondering how in the fresh hell Kramer vs. Kramer beat Apocalypse Now for best picture. Another of Johnny's hacked off Oscar moments was Joaquin Phoenix somehow NOT winning the Best Supporting Actor statue for his otherworldly performance of Emperor Commodus in Gladiator. Johnny most likely WOULD have been tuning in tonight if the Academy hadn't lost their minds and not nominated Mila Kunis for Black Swan. Stop giving out gift bags to rich people and start nominating those most worthy AND give the viewers at home an 'eye candy bag' with Ms. Kunis.

So Johnny hopes Natalie Portman wins but past that doesn't really much care. Your thoughts?

A Bergen County woman is actually suing WABC-TV because they accidentally read the wrong lottery numbers

Talk about trying to win the legal lottery in place of the real one.

A woman known as Rakel Daniele (How cute that rhymes) has decided that when WABC accidentally called the numbers (this'll get a laugh too, who uses these numbers other than Rakel Daniele) 1,2,3,4,5 with a Powerball number of -- wait for it -- 6 she thought she'd won. WABC-TV accidentally posted 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with the Mega Ball of 12. She said when she saw the same numbers posted the next day and found out they were wrong she was "damaged".

Yes, we definitely think she was damaged alright. When you read some of the filings in the case you might think she's damaged too.

Get ready for these damaging claims brought to you by Daniele's lawyer Evan Baker:

*She was "severely damaged" by relying on the "false and incorrect" lottery results.

*WABC compounded her damge-ed-ness by "negligently, carelessly, recklessly and/or intentionally" rebroadcasting the erroneous numbers the next day.

*The incorrect re-broadcast of that news edition with the incorrect numbers is "beyond all possible bounds of decency, and were atrocious, and utterly intolerable in a civilized community".

The litigant is demanding $75,000.

Wanna know what is intolerable in a civilized society? People like Rakel Daniele plugging up the court system and using up valuable resources to try and get rich over NOTHING. Literally NOTHING. Ms. Daniele, get over yourself. Mr. Baker maybe there is a future for you in writing for 'The Puffery Quarterly'.

It would sure seem at this point the Peacocks will have a #4 seed in the MAAC tourney in March.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SHADOWY MEN ON A SHADOWY PLANET!

One of the great instrumental bands of the last many many moons though they ceased to be a band long ago. Yes, they did the Kids in the Hall theme, also known by it's real name 'Having an Average Weekend'. One of the ten best theme songs in all of television. Johnny got to see Shadowy Men long ago in Detroit and they were fantastic. What a fun band they were to see. Tip top.

An evening with the fabulous Wanda Jackson

First off, poor Wanda wasn't in fine voice last night at the Bowery Ballroom, fighting a very very sore throat that limited her in Boston Wednesday night. In between songs while she spun amazing stories of her life and career in music she'd be throwing back cough drops. She was a real trooper. Ms. Jackson waved off a couple songs on the set list she knew she couldn't possibly reach with her sore throat but did manage to growl through some of her classics like 'Fujiyama Mama', 'Riot in Cell Block #9', 'Funnel of Love' and a great cover of Eddie Cochran's 'Shakin All Over'. On 'Shakin' All Over' Wanda showed that while her throat may have been sore there was nothing wrong with her stage moves.

A wonderful night for Johnny to get to see such an American legend. It really wouldn't have mattered to Johnny if she'd just have read the words to the songs, she's that fantastic.

Warning -- crappy cell phone picture, put on your special goggles at once.

The more we find out about JCPD officer Rick Garrison's fatal accident in Bayonne the more troubled we are

Information has been slow to come out in the fatal crash that sadly claimed the life of Helen Antczak but the more that does come out the more disappointed we are in officer Garrison's actions.

He was speeding, we know this. That's a fact. He was going close to 70 from what accident investigators have suggested. He had earlier sideswiped a car and kept going. That car sped up to follow him to get his driver info and watched him as he crashed into Helen Antczak car. We could make a lot of points here. Was he speeding because he KNOWS he can get away with it because he's a police officer? Did officer Garrison think he was somehow immune to consequences such as the ones he's most likely about to face?

The two most troubling facts that have come out are these: Garrison left the scene of the accident and failed to report the accident according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio. Among Garrison's other citations for the crash were careless driving, another citation for leaving the scene and failure to observe a traffic signal. Here's something else bothersome, DeFazio still has not interviewed Garrison yet.

There are serious questions here that need serious answers.

Leaving the scene and you're a police officer? Geez Louise we've seen how police handle people who leave the scene of accidents quite often on teevee and YouTube and it's most likely NOT what Garrison got. Failure to report the accident? How did that happen?

Again, we're going to need some answers here. For as brave as we're told Garrison was in the Reed Street gun battle that cost Detective MarcDiNardo his life, if indeed he fled from a serious accident the bravery scale just slid back to single digits.

It's all about the music today dear readers

Now, if the fancy strikes you, Neko Case is playing a short set at the Barnes and Noble on Union Square tonight starting at 7 pm. Neko will be there along with comedian, writer and actor Michael Showalter. Neko will play three songs and then the both of them will answer some questions. Johnny would be all over this but for one thing tonight. Tonight he gets to cross off a bucket list concert which now pretty much narrows the list of artists he wanted to see but never did to the Sex Pistols. Johnny is going to the Bowery Ballroom to be part of a sold out crowd where the American legend known as Wanda Jackson will be ripping it up. Wanda Jackson is one of the rare artists who has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. We're talking about a music giant here people.

If you have not checked out Wanda's latest work, The Party Ain't Over, with The White Stripes Jack White (Yeah Detroit!) what are you waiting for buckos and buckettes? It's a must.

To get your morning off on the right foot here's Wanda Jackson and Jack White with her classic 'Funnel of Love'.

St. Peter's continues to roll on

The Pride of Jersey City®, the St. Peter's Peacock's men's basketball team topped Loyola in the Windy City yesterday (wasn't it maybe windier HERE?) 71-67. A big win for the team and a good showing for the MAAC in this non-conference showdown.

Now, the big games come this week. St. Peter's, Iona (Friday night at 9 pm at the Yanitelli Center) and Rider (next Sunday on the road) ALL of whom have 11-5 conference records and somebody's gotta go home sad so the logjam at 2nd in the MAAC will be broken. St. Peter's needs to win at least one of these games heading into the conference tourney if for no other reason than confidence when one of these teams show up across the tourney bracket.

Movie trivia on a Friday afternoon

For ten points and control of the board, how does Winston Wolf take his coffee?

No Googling, fire when ready in comments...

Joey, do you like stories about economics?

If not gladiator movies Joey loves him some economic news.

According to Kate Slevin, executive director of the Tri-State Transportation Campaign the small increase in PATH ridership is a sign of better economic times for our area.

"It’s a good indication that the economic recovery is afoot. Generally, transit ridership increases or decreases depending on how the economy’s doing in our region."

That is good news, except when Johnny can't find a seat and has to stand all the way to 33rd St. PATH ridership was up 2.3% last year, 1.6 million more than in 2009. As the article link points out however, the NJ Transit fare increases may have played a part in raising PATH ridership. We here at the Jersey City Desk seem to recall an article in the New York Times that talked about more New Yorkers taking the PATH to avoid the huge MTA price increases. Does this add up to that 2.3% or 1.6 million riders? Most likely not but it does cause us concern before we start thinking a true economic recovery is underway based on PATH rides.

Just as the 6,000 teachers Mayor Mike is getting ready to axe across the river.

All over the Middle East people have had enough of corrupt leadership that steals them blind when not trying to distract them from the real issues their homelands face. Here in America we idly sit by and watch people like Mayor Healy run a corrupt inefficient crony-centered government and the only thing we hear about in the local paper are stories like "Petition drive to recall Healy may fall short, opposition groups should throw in the towel'.

If you're the least bit ashamed or embarrassed by that statement then maybe you should, uh, DO SOMETHING about your situation. Any reason Tahrir Square can't come to Grove St?

Time for Jersey City, After Dark

Johnny's gonna go off the reservation today and preach a little

So if that's not your bag you can skip this one...

This is really two stories that Johnny's gonna wrap into one. Or at least try, as you well know he's editorially challenged.

Our first story is that of plotting criminals who through some very bad 'intelligence' broke into a home in the middle of the night looking for a hidden safe/treasure worth a fortune. There never was any such fortune and when this fact finally sunk in the crooks opened fire and shot everyone in the house. The ghouls shot the parents first. Then they murdered a small girl whose last words were "Please don't shoot me" before she was twice shot in the head and killed. The shadowy killers vanished into the night. Now you may say "Hey Johnny, I remember that story, it's famous, it's the 'In Cold Blood' murders made famous by Truman Capote that changed the way literature is written and spawned a cottage industry of books and films on the Clutter family murder in Holcomb Kansas in 1959. But for the fact that Kenyon Clutter a teen male was also murdered in the famed In Cold Blood case you'd be pretty close. But in this story that the media refuses to cover for some reason, the mother survived her gunshot wound and played dead only to have to listen to her daughter murdered. Unlike In Cold Blood, the murderers of the Clutters, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith were small time hoods and crooks, often in jail. The murders Johnny is here to discuss were done by real American Patriots. You know, the groups that right wing supporters think are all that and a bag of chips sitting on the Mexican border trying to do their patriotic best to keep illegal immigrants out of America. Their group is called The Minutemen. You've probably seen them extolled for their great patriotism. Mostly it's self-hero worship at least until someone like a leader in the Minutemen movement named Shawna Forde is involved in the murders of Raul Flores and her NINE year old daughter Brisenia Flores. Gina Gonzales, the mother in the case was shot and played dead. Shawna Forde, Minuteman member heard about some secret drug money stashed in the home. You know, the old Clutter safe, just sitting there loaded with illegal drug money. Except like Richard Hickock and Perry Smith found out, there was no money.

Now let's think on this for a minute. Shawna Forde and her militia group thought that upwards of a MILLION dollars in illegal drug money was in the Flores home. Instead of being a real kind of patriot and informing the FBI or local Arizona police (Hey look Arizona with yet another anti-Latino event) they decided the Minutemen could make a big score and KEEP the money and finance the Minutemen, certainly now to what end that money would have been used is extremely suspect.

Let's fast forward to 1965, 6 years after the Clutters were shotgunned. Perry Smith and Richard Hickock came to the end of the court system for them and they certainly got what they had coming, a short drop and a quick stop in the gallows.

Can anyone tell Johnny why Shawna Forde and her two accomplices should get what Hickock and Smith got, seeing as how their crimes were so similar? For the record, Brisenia Flores and Nancy Clutter uttered almost exactly the same final words.

Forde's not now suddenly some ROGUE Minuteman militia operative. Ever notice that? Right wingers will defend these people sometimes to the point of fisticuffs but when one of their members shoots a child in the head twice suddenly they never did have anything to do with them and they sure weren't representative of the movement.

Johnny thinks different. Shawna, Johnny will buy the rope for you and your two accomplices, Albert Robert Gaxiola and Jason Eugene Bush, just as he would have bought the rope for Hickock and Smith in whose hideous footprints you now follow into history.

Happy Valentine's Day from the Jersey City Desk

So how about a love song that has always been one of Johnny's favorites WITH some backstory from Stevie Nicks herself. Here's Fleetwood Mac's brilliant 'Sara'.

"I wrote Sara on the piano, by myself. The original Sara was 16 minutes long. Like about nine more verses than what you hear on the record. It got edited down to 14 minutes, down to 11 minutes, down to 9 minutes, down to 7 minutes, down to 4 minutes and 40 seconds. I was to the point where I went, 'Is the word Sara even going to be left in the song?'

I knew that Sara would be very popular because I loved writing that song. I've had more fun writing that...I remember the night I wrote it. 'I sat up with a very good friend of mine whose name is Sara, who was married to Mick Fleetwood. She likes to think it's completely about her, but it's really not completely about her. It's about me, about her, about Mick, about Fleetwood Mac. Its about all of us at that point. There's little bits about each one of us in that song and when it had all the other verses it really covered a vast bunch of people. Sara was the kind of song you could fall in love with, because I fell in love with it..."

The Jersey City Desk is thrilled to present the 2011 'Running of the Corgis"

We hereby accept 100% of the praise, love and 100% of all that Google juice for the Jersey City Desk all while accepting none of the legal, social or moral responsibilities should the corgi's run amok. Let us refer back to last year's rules, regulations and carnage:

Yes Westminster Kennel Club fans, the big show is at Madison Square Garden Monday and Tuesday with the dogs already inside. One of New York's most hallowed traditions, the "Running of the Corgis", will be held today between 2-4 pm. Runners will run down Broadway from 42nd St. to 35th St. chased by Corgi's (Remember the Pembroke Welsh Corgis have the sharp horns while the Cardigan Welsh Corgis do not). Last year four runners sustained ankle and calf gorings though none requiring hospitalization. New York no doubt hopes to never repeat the 1999 run when 2 runners were killed after they got tired and sat down on a curb and were overrun and died of hundreds of small yet deadly horn puncture wounds.

Kind of gives you a great big lump in your throat doesn't it? But knowing the Jersey City Desk is sponsoring really makes Johnny feel part of something bigger, as he stands on folding metal chair so as to not get gored.

Here's a Pembroke Welsh Corgi before growing his horns (These ones are OK to pet).

Mayor Bloomberg, please allow Johnny to speak for ALL the Irish in the tri-state...

We know you were trying to make a joke when you said about the American Irish Historical Society on 5th Avenue:

The mayor, who lives in the neighborhood, said that when he walked by the stone-and-brick building on St. Patrick’s Day, “there are a bunch of people that are totally inebriated hanging out the window, waving.”

“I know that’s a stereotype of the Irish,” he added to a smattering of groans and laughs, “but nevertheless we Jews from around the corner think it.”

Look, Mayor Mike, a joke should be FUNNY. That wasn't clever. Wanna know a clever Irish joke? What's green and has an IQ of 97? Answer -- A St. Patrick's Day Parade. See THAT is how it's done. Really, it's not that big of a deal nor that big of an insult.

HOWEVER

Since we think you'd be a great candidate to make sure this kind of anti-Irish sentiment doesn't take hold somewhere, you are hereby sentenced to work cleanup detail in Hoboken after their St. Patrick's Day celebrations come to an end sometime in April. Contact Dawn Zimmer, she's the mayor there. The one who doesn't take FBI kickback money.

It's nice to know the Matlock crowd is alive and well in FuHo

Residents in Hoboken are upset. They are upset with all the noise after the bars let out. They are upset with the short WHOOP bursts noise police cars make early in the morning in Hoboken. They are upset by the sounds of large garbage trucks. In essence, the Matlock crowd in FuHo is fed up and they're not gonna take it anymore.

A group of residents confronted mayor Dawn Zimmer, Police Chief Anthony Falco, and Zoning Officer Ann Holtzman at a local "quality of life' town hall style meeting. No matter what the original topic was, it came back to noise.

Now, don't get Johnny wrong, he does have sympathy for the residents suffering a rowdy Friday and Saturday night influx of revelers. He lived in the student ghetto in Ypsilanti Michigan for Eastern Michigan University. He knows all about loud keg parties, blaring music, and inconsiderate crowds that sometimes use your property as a bathroom and or vomitorium. Police patrols SHOULD be on the lookout for people too inconsiderate to realize people live where you're now singing the refrains of Donna Summer's 'Last Dance' because it was just playing in the bar before you got shoved out the door at closing time. We agree that often times groups like these understand only pepper spray and tasers.

But REALLY FuHo, police sirens? Those are kind of necessary. Garbage truck backup beeps? Would you rather no police or garbage trucks come down your streets at all or should they seek an approved schedule of when it's ok to come down your boulevard?

Tell ya what, why don't all you people who are obviously unwanted and unappreciated in FuHo come spend that cash right here at some of the best darned bars around. Come on over, have a great time, enjoy a moonlight stroll along our expansive riverwalk with the best views of NYC around. Don't be insulted by Hoboken residents, come on over here to Cool City and let us show you a good time. Besides, when it comes down to it do you want to party in a town (Hoboken) with just an average no fun allowed no nonsense mayor or would you like to come to Jersey City and drink where the king of drinking mayors lives? You know where the party is Hudson County, now come to Jersey City and claim your barstools.

So the old ARC tunnel didn't get built but Gateway Tunnel in the exact same spot will be

And look at all the politicians lining up to accept credit. Of course the most surprising is Governor Lumpy Rutherford Christie. "Mommy said said I was against it before I was for it but it still got built I'm the smart one here". Yeah, uh, except Lumpy weren't these very issues of cutting New Jersey's financial skin in the game concerns when the Secretary of Transportation, Republican Ray LaHood met with you and promised to help cover any overruns (ok probable overruns, we know how things work in New Jersey lets not be rubes here)? So you blustered and began a piquish (is that a word? It is now) attempt to then refuse to pay money this state legally had to pay back if someone, um, like a governor cancelled the plan as a grandstanding move.

So, now the Amtrak and NJ Transit commuter tunnel will be built and end under Macy's at 34th St. The two US Senators who were behind this plan all the way and went to the mat for it, Senators Menendez and Lautenberg deserve some credit for taking a stand on a position, not changing it and seeing that vision through. We have issues with both of them on other matters but in this case they were right and stuck to their beliefs unlike Lumpy Christie.

Susan Kolb, kindly remove your head from your rear end already

You have DANGEROUS DOGS. They have attacked citizens in our fair city. You come up with excuses like "Oh the dogs were spooked by snow plows which is why the ran across the street and tore into a man's arm". Yeah, like dogs are prone to do, get upset with a vehicle and then go looking for a person to savage. Another man was bitten repeatedly by these dogs, as he tried to keep one from biting his face the other chewed into his groin area. Susan Kolb's response? She firmly placed all the blame on the victim saying he somehow approached the dogs incorrectly. Another woman, carrying a six month old infant was bowled over by these same animals. Kolb said she thought that park was empty.

Susan Kolb has been a scofflaw over these dangerous animals for a couple years now. Kolb originally signed off on a plan to have the South African Boerboels dogs cared for in California to save them from being euthanized but she never sent them and now, well, yeah, they'll probably be euthanized.

So now Kolb must face the music, she faces 18 months in the pokey for not following her court agreement to send the dogs to California. No doubt other criminal charges and certainly civil suits are possible.

Don't you just love people who think their pets somehow aren't pets but family members and they deserve special treatment? This is an extreme case but you know the types, people with little dogs in purses going into Macy's or other departments stores or in some cases restaurants like it's their right and how dare you call them out on it. Johnny calls them out, you should too. Dogs should be on leashes and properly curbed and picked up after. Those are YOUR responsibilities as a dog owner. animals are pets, not family members. It's too bad people like Susan Kolb exhibit all that's bad with pet ownership and sadly her two dogs will now most likely pay the ultimate price for it.

In Detroit tonight Hockey Inc. took down the Broadway Blueshirts 3-2. Michigan State alumni Drew Miller scored the winning goal for the Red Wings at 14:37 of the third period to make it 3-1 Detroit. Brandon Dubinsky scored his 18th for the Rags about a minute later but they New Yorkers couldn't beat Wings netminder Jimmy Howard the rest of the way.

The Rangers have not won in Joe Louis Arena since 1999.

Hey you, yeah you....What do you know about Peter Stuyvesant?

Nothing?! How is that possible? Peg leg Pete INVENTED Jersey City and big swaths of New York City and you know nothing about the man, the legend or the stolen statue (OK stolen here is a relative term)? Heavens, you need to put away all the Super Bowl ads on YouTube away for a few minutes and enjoy an excellent read in our founder, Peter Stuyvesant.

Getting your learn on is cool now in Johnny's Jersey City.

It's your Super Bowl Sunday open thread

Seriously, you can't expect any of us in the office today with a 43ยบ day and here it is 11 AM and that pre-game show for the 6:30 PM game should be kicking off any minute. If you want to use this thread for trash talk, to comments on those fine Chevrolet ads, talk about your annoyance with FOX announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman (Maybe AIkman will cry on the air as he announced he's getting a divorce this week). Maybe you'd just like to drop by and make a bold prediction as to which decade the Browns will actually make a Super Bowl. Have fun today, share a recipe or two and since our intrepid reporter Oddzymandias is from our New Orleans office, here's a huge moment for her last year and something to get you jacked up for the game:

We're gonna do the music series tomorrow night on a snowy Saturday. Johnny had a tough day at the dentist and special pills to ease the pain are goofing with his normally snap judgement in which case you might wind up with Barry Manilow.

Jersey City plans to appeal the latest census count -- feels citizens were undercounted

Now, WHY would our fair city want another count besides the fact state and federal monies are handed out based on census numbers? If Jersey City can pick up a few hundred more heads in the count, just a few Jersey City will pass Newark as the largest city in New Jersey.

How cool would that be? Jersey City as the largest city in the Garden State. JC would have so much power it'd be stunning what could be done. Jersey City could raise a standing army and invade both Hoboken and Bayonne and annex them into Jersey City and make those cities pay higher taxes, allowing for Jersey City resident to pay less. The city budget could be balanced on the backs of the residents of South Jersey City (Bayonne) and North Jersey City (Hoboken).

Just think of the possibilities! Feel free to share some of your own...

Wait, look, listen, notice anything?

We're not under any kind of storm watch or ice watch or blizzard warning or ANY kind of weather related malady. Enjoy it, open the windows, go outside for a walk.

Tomorrow night? Yeah, guess what.

Tonight a few good minutes with the late Brittany Murphy who we lost all too soon last year. Here is a tribute of her wonderful role in the highly underrated and screamingly funny 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'.

TIme for Jersey City, After Dark

Jersey City's own weather prognosticator, Jebediah the Wombat says EARLY Spring!

That's right, Johnny ventured over to where Jebediah the Jersey City Wombat lives (under one of those hundreds of cinder blocks near the corner of Bay Street and Warren near the Powerhouse Arts Building) and as Jebediah came out from under his cinder block home, started getting hit in the head by the ice storm, gave the wombat symbol for 'screw this' and went back underground.

Jebediah did NOT see his shadow which means an early spring, something Johnny thinks we're all ready for.

If you're going to steal somebody's snow shovel, try not to hit the house of a cop

Isai Santiago was a crooked g on a robbing spree. He was trying to force his way into a locked house as the owner of the house, off duty Jersey City police officer pulled up. Santiago was unable to jimmy the door and so, in a fit of pique (or necessity) decided to walk off with the officer's snow shovel from her porch. The officer followed Santiago a short distance to Hutton Street and Central Avenue where she yelled out her car window "Hey, that's my shovel".

The officer had a small child in her car which kept her from getting out and confronting Santiago but luckily Jersey City's finest were able to make contact with Santiago and make contact with him.
