A nice article in the NY Times on tipping
It's a good read, one we think will be right up the alley of the average Jersey City Desk reader. What are your thoughts on tipping? Do you often feel pressured to tip a certain amount?

Saturday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with INXS!
Well let's welcome YouTube back from the dead with a sultry and steamy video by INXS. A very underrated band of you ask Johnny. They had many many great songs aside from their hits. They had a very versatile style. They could do it all.

Saturday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with TOMMY TUTONE!
Is there a more famous phone number in all of music history? There have been several of some note but seemingly not on this level. This phone number was out of commission in many paces for eons. A clever workaround by the person who ripped this clip for us all to enjoy. Just push play and feel free to sing along.

We'll get to the music series tomorrow as YouTube is not performing up to snuff. It's terribly slow and not loading clips in some cases. No point in putting up hep tunes you can't see and or listen to.
And how about that USA men's hockey team? Johnny did some research and they were picked by precious few to medal and 90% of the pre-Olympic predictions had them finishing anywhere from 5th to 8th. Sunday they will play for gold north of the border against the Canadians. To beat them a second time and thus win the gold would be epic and push USA Hockey to new heights.

We have to go all Fast Times at Ridgemont High on a Queens man
Paul Franco is a no brain little prick.
Now, first of all we realize there could be more than one Paul Franco in Queens so let's be clear, THIS Paul Franco.
Paul hits women. What a class act. There is no lower life form than a guy who hits women. Not only does he hit women, he threatens to release sexy videos online of his ex-girlfriend if she doesn't give him money for his car. It gets worse. Paul also changed the password to his ex-girlfriend's Facebook page, changed her status to gay and started hitting on women online.
Paul seems to know a lot of how this online thing works so no doubt he will Google his own name and when he does he'll find this:

Blonde joke night:
A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do.
"Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"
The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?"
The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch."
A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
"You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. "Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. "And by the way," the blonde added, "that's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."

All New York City parades will now be 25% less good
We know, that's some fine grammar.
It's true, in order to save money, the powers that be in NYC are cutting all parades back 25%. As to your first question, YES, even the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is the ONE parade that should never be cut, it's iconic. Yes, a lot of other parades have been around a long time and are a really good time but the Thanksgiving Day parade? Cut back? Pshaw. This parade pays for itself in the sheer number of people lining the route and popping in and out of stores the entire time. There are a few other parades Johnny would hate to see scaled back, like the West Village Halloween parade but for all that is good and right with this world, NYC don't trim back the Macy's Parade.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled snowstorm.

When is a retirement not really a retirement?
Why when individuals can soak Jersey City taxpayers for coming back three weeks later as 'consultants'.
Yep, retire from your job, get a huge severance package and then three weeks later come back to the trough and start soaking up even more taxpayer money when you become a consultant. Jersey City Assistant Business Administrator Roger Grego and Chief of Administrative Services Kathy Dealy both retired February 1st. Both have now come back to accept lucrative jobs as consultants to in Jersey City. Now the state of New Jersey (and we doubt we'll agree on much with Chris Christie but we sure do here) is looking into this set up and are looking to see if this is at worst not legal and second a tremendous waste of taxpayer monies. One thing we don't need here in Jersey City right now are highly paid consultants.

It was 30 years ago tonight Herb Brooks gave the following speech to his young charges about to face a dynasty.
Great moments are born from great opportunity.
And that's what you have here tonight, boys.
That's what you've earned here, tonight.
One game.
If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine.
But not this game. Not tonight.
Tonight, we skate with 'em.
Tonight, we stay with 'em, and we shut them down because we can!
Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world.
You were born to be hockey players -- every one of you.
And you were meant to be here tonight.
This is your time.
Their time -- is done. It's over.
I'm sick and tired of hearin' about what a great hockey team the Russians have.
Screw 'em!

Dwayne Watkins, do we need to go over how to act all gangsta?
Ok Dwayne, you seem to know a lot about the gangsta life. You were found walking down Communipaw Avenue with your 27 bags of weed and a gun by the Jersey City PD. Weed and a weapon? Gangsta. The fact you had your .22 tied around your neck with shoelace string? NOT gangsta. In fact, it's so not gangsta we're revoking your membership card and you can no longer hang with real gangstas. Seriously, a shoelace around your neck? Parents tie things around their kids necks who are forgetful little tikes. You know the slow ones. Here you are advertising that you are some kind of remedial gangsta by merely walking down the street. Shame on you. Maybe the shoelace thing works out in Paterson but not here in Jersey City.
Is this what it has come to here? Remedial gangstas?

In honor of the Jersey Journal's annual big time spelling Bee...
Johnny's (who was and is a great speller and did very well at these things--a mom with a Master's Degree in English will do that) favorite spelling bee of all time...
See this is why Johnny doesn't keep naked pictures of himself on his cell phone
Zija Karpuzi, a humble pizza maker in Bayonne was arrested and charged with beating a man with a big ole metal pole when he found out a friend of one of the drivers had stolen his girlfriend's cell phone and taken the naked photos of her on it and sending them to friends. Police say at first Karpuzi knocked the windows out of the "victim's" car and when he got out took a little street justice to the man. Karpuzi was charged with two weapons charges, aggravated assault and criminal mischief.
Johnny thinks the "victim" here helped contribute to his own beat down. Time was in America when a man didn't have to worry about his girlfriend's nekkid pictures being redistributed via a stolen cellie, because back then there was no such thing as cell phones. This is also exactly why Johnny doesn't keep such pics on his cell phone, the desire for someone to steal it and pass them around would just be too great for the average citizen.

Former Jersey City council wannabe Lori Serrano indicted for mail fraud
Former city council candidate and Jersey City Housing Authority chairperson, Lori Serrano was indicted for mail fraud on top of her indictments for taking dirty money from all around slimer Solomon Dwek. Things aren't looking up for Serrano according to the Jersey Journal:
She was originally indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, which carries a maximum 20 years prison sentence and $250,000 fine.
The superseding indictment also charges her with mail fraud, which also carries a maximum 20 years prison sentence and $250,000 fine
It makes us happy she lost. Jersey City does not need more official members of city council (Hello Mariano) or in the mayors office (Hi Leona) convicted and bounced from office. We've had enough of the machination of the Jersey City government either indicted, convicted or pleading guilty.

Newark Liberty Airport? Fliers hate it
Newark's Liberty Airport has come in last in a survey of airline passengers raking the largest airports in the US. According to NJ.com:
Newark did no better than third from bottom in any of the six customer satisfaction categories and finished last in three of the factors — airport accessibility, security check and terminal facilities.
Now, mea culpa, Johnny does not fly BUT he does make several runs a year through Newark Liberty to pick up and drop off his wonderful wife and family and friends from out of town. As for accessibility in the drop off and pick up department Johnny would like to offer a suggestion; Tell the police and or authorities out there just because they have a gun and a badge and wide brimmed hat does NOT give them the right to act like complete jagoffs which happens FAR too often. These clowns think because they are police they have to prove it. No, you don't. You should try being ambassadors to the flying public and break out the Lone Wolf McQuade impression when somebody is doing something serious. Waiting for a passenger does NOT rise to this level of safety threat.
Johnny can only imagine how BAD things are on the inside with the airport ranking 'second to last in baggage claim and third from last in check-in/baggage check process and food and retail services.'
Clean up your act Newark Liberty, give people a better impression, most of what ails you is free to fix.

We are in full agreement with Council member Steve Fulop, political appointees do not need nor deserve paid health care
Neither does the City Council here in Jersey City but that'll be taken up next week.
Fulop is trying to address the fact that currently two appointees (as well as scads of other political appointees) get full health care benefits at the cost to Jersey City taxpayers. Fulop's point is well made that if you take a look just at the Jersey City Incinerator Authority, their meetings are averaging out to 12 hours a year. For this they get taxpayer funded health care. Let's get nutty and say they work 24 hours a YEAR, that's still not worth the cost. Fulop says his proposal (and good luck with it Councilman, you're the last bastion of clean government in this city) would save taxpayers upwards of $400K a year. That's HUGE in this day and age.
When business as usual council member Bill Gaughan tried walking Fulop back to say he didn't really know if it was just 12 hours a year Fulop stood his ground:
“It’s all political patronage, that’s what it is.”
Political patronage? In Jerramiah Healy's Jersey City?
Say it ain't so.

If it was V8 juice get the hazmat team
A sand truck had to be called to sop up juice that was spilled from a tanker truck on Route 440. Look if this is like apple juice or cranberry juice, while a shame, doesn't need hazmat. V8, that sh*t is nasty and a hazmat team should be sent to the scene. Sand won't cover that up. It's the same idea as a cat in catbox. Yes it's covered but it's still a turd. So to reiterate tonight a juice of unknown origin spilled on Route 440 and Johnny detests V8 juice.

Don't forget, later today down Broadway, 'The Running of the Corgis'
Yes Westminster Kennel Club fans, the big show is at Madison Square Garden Monday and Tuesday with the dogs already inside. One of New York's most hallowed traditions, the 'Running of the Corgis', will be held today between 2-4 pm. Runners will run down Broadway from 42nd St. to 35th St. chased by Corgi's (Remember the Pembroke Welsh Corgis have the sharp horns while the Cardigan Welsh Corgis do not). Last year four runners sustained ankle and calf gorings though none requiring hospitalization. New York no doubt hopes to never repeat the 1999 run when 2 runners were killed after they got tired and sat down on a curb and were overrun and died of hundreds of small yet deadly horn puncture wounds.
Here we see a young Pembroke Welsh Corgi before he grows his horns.

It sure was a disappointing way to begin the Olympics. But enough about the boring opening ceremonies. Georgian luge slider Nodar Kumaritashvili as most of you know died in a crash this afternoon in Whistler British Columbia. Know what helps athletes like Kumaritashvili not crash and kill themselves? Familiarity with the track and lots of practice. Herein lies Canada's shame in this. The track was built exceptionally fast. Some lugers say too fast. Johnny read some of their comments today saying with this track they felt like guinea pigs. Practice goes a long way to make for a safe event. In their newfound zeal to top the medals totals they kept the teams from other nations away from the track allowing ONLY Canadian sliders to use it to gain that little extra edge. Several nations including the USA complained for a long time until finally given access. This sad death does make one wonder if lack of prep time was a factor. Also, who designs sharp turns on luge/bobsled tracks with giant unpadded or protected metal beams coming out of them? That's obviously not good.

Johnny, is anything up with a Seattle Wal-Mart? Funny you should ask citizen
We're not trying to encourage any of you crazy kids out there but this caught our eye. You can be 51 and still 'have it' prank-wise.
Stinky good!
A Seattle area Walmart was evacuated this weekend after a man released "stink bombs" and "super fart spray," according to the police. 75 customers and employees were forced to flee the stinky Walmart after the suspect threw vials of foul-smelling liquid onto the floor and sprayed a can of a product called "Super Fart Spray."

For those of you scoring at home, Leona Beldini faces ten years on each guilty count
And since she was convicted on two counts that's a possible 20 year sentence. She also faces a $500K fine on each charge. Anybody hear the erstwhile Mayor decry the verdict yesterday? Hizzhonor was more upset a friend was convicted then happy corruption was being rooted out. And so close to him to boot.
Huh.
Huh.

Leona Belidni, former Deputy Mayor, found guilty on two charges, not guilty of four
So it looks like it's now official and cannot any longer be dismissed by Mayor Healy, there are crooks among his loyal staff. We'd also love a comment since this is no longer a 'case in court so he'll have no comment'. Let's hear it Mayor, Whadda ya say?
Beldini was convicted of two counts of acceptance of things of value to influence and reward.
The Jersey Journal reported her attorney "has his hands clasped in front of his face."
We used to have a post for moments like that back at Yahoo trolling school:
"Bwaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaha"
Again, the FBI in the graft roundups of last summer is batting a thousand. They all proclaim innocence but not one has been seen that way in the court of law.
You know she thought she was skating because business in Hudson County always just works itself out. Until today.

And there is no school in New York City tomorrow
Because of the impending end of the world storm, New York City schools are closed tomorrow. This was announced at noon but it took Kiki 2 hours to walk it over to the press room.
Well we've been holding the presses in hopes Leona Bedini will be found guilty
But that has not happened yet, her jury is still deliberating her fate. And while the wait continues, do you have and good jury stories to share?

The Jersey City Desk Action Weather team is tracking a potential whopper of a storm Tuesday night into Wednesday
Early computer models show this storm could drop anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of white stuff. The main portion of the storm will be Wednesday so now would be the time to go empty Target and Shop Rite or A&P of all their perishables and sidewalk salt.
The Jersey Jersey City Desk Action Weather team will keep you updated as we get all giddy at the thought of a near blizzard.

Awwwww, poor New York City restaurant owners don't want grades from the health department posted in their establishments
We think it's is GREAT idea. Why oh why shouldn't restaurants NOT have their grade from the health department listed? Things like cleanliness, and not passing along food bourne-illness are somewhat important to the dining out public. Of course the restaurant owners showed up at the meeting proposing this en masse to complain they'd be unfairly given a scarlet letter. He's a clue gang, try keeping your kitchens clean and your food prep areas clean enough to meet city standards.
There was one luddite at the meeting all about the owners whom you'll actually have to hear to believe his tunnel visioned stupidity:
"Robert Bookman, legislative counsel for the New York City chapters of the restaurant association, argued that “a mandated posting against the wishes of the owner raises significant free-speech issues.”
Free Speech? Are you kidding Mr. Bookman? We're talking safety of the general public and you throw something completely unrelated to the discussion and try wrapping yourself in the flag over freedom of speech? Yikes.
Obviously we here at the Jersey City Desk are all for letters being assigned to restaurants so you can decide if you want to drop in for dinner to a place with a 'D' rating or if you'd rather go across the street to a place offering a 'B' rating.
Why is it businesses (and hospitals are the same way, good luck finding out how many bad doctors there have been brought up on ethics charges) are always against their customers right to know?
Wait, Bookman.......Bookman, that name rings a bell, hmmmmmmm, Bookman, OH YEAH, BOOKMAN! From 'One Day at a Time'

The weather report has been revised--our area will now experience 6-8" of Fruity Pebbles
The latest weathermap from Wunderground shows a massive line of Fruity Pebbles headed our way. We advise stocking up on milk.
It's a Winter Storm Watch for Hudson County, the Hudson Valley and that big place across the rvier
The Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team has issued a Winter Storm Watch from this evening through Saturday afternoon. Tonight we're expected to get 1-3" of snow with blowing and drifting and another 3-6" overnight into Saturday for a storm total of at least 6".
Now is the time to go to Target and Shop Rite and clean them out of everything so you can subsist for one day in the snow. Hurry, don't let your neighbor go buy the last Duraflame logs.

Could we here in Jersey City and New York City be facing down another snowstorm this weekend?
While southern New Jersey is almost certain to get rocked with up to a foot of snow, weathercasters are saying the slightest variation in direction towards the north could sock our area with maybe 8" of the white stuff.
Bring it on. As for southern Jersey we're of the mind that if the entire cast of The Jersey Shore were snowed in and trapped and had a Donner party type situation the MTV cameras will be rolling to catch every succulent bite ;)

Ground Hog Day was yesterday but for some Newport residents, this water main break thing is another day like they had last week
Yes water pipe fans, another water main break has severely curtailed water in the Newport area of Jersey City this morning. Jersey City communications director Stan Eason said the break is VERY similar to the 35" break suffered last week in Newport and many residences in high rise condo and apartment buildings are having difficulty getting any kind of water pressure.
Tell ya what kids, while you're down undergound fixing this one up, put on the waders, get a flashlight and see if any more of these massive pipes are ready to burst before like a chain reaction it winds up affecting Johnny's neighborhood and loft because if that happens workers will be pelted with rocks and garbage and water balloons from high above Jersey City with Johnny's water balloon slingshot that can hit people 3-4 blocks away.

The Jersey City Desk would like you to all know this will be the place to come get all your Olympic results and commentary in another week and a half. We'll be happy to point out all the Americans who should have won medals that were screwed over by international judges, we'll be all about the medals won by US athletes and of course we'll be the leader in insults towards other nations rude enough to win medals that Americans should have won.
Johnny has a rule about the great US athletes representing our great nation. If you take up valuable time and money training at US Olympic facilities and yet fail to win a gold or silver or bronze medal, you should spend the next year in jail. That's tough love but those same athletes will think twice about it the next time and certainly try harder.
Speaking of all things winter, Jersey City and the surrounding areas are going to get around 2-3" of snow tonight which may slow down your rush hour.

Double murder in Jersey City early this morning
What a coincidence a double murder in JC takes place on Ground Hog Day because it seems we have murders every day here just like the day before. 17 year old Mileak Richardson and his cousin only reported as Lester were shot to death over on Woodlawn Avenue about 4 am.
Far for us to be piling on, people are grieving and murder in and of itself is heinous so don't take this the wrong way but this young man who was only 17 was out somewhere at 4 am on a Monday night/Tuesday morning? People, this is just not smart on Richardson's behalf but them again he has paid the ultimate price for his decision. Our bigger question is to the parents or guardians or whomever is supposed to be watching this 17 year old and know being out at 4 am is a recipe for, well the end of his young life. Of course the family is suffering but if the parents have other children in the home besides Mileak it's time for social service to pay them a visit.
Sad sad sad...

Jersey City's own Jebediah the Wombat saw his shadow early this morning, six more weeks of winter
See, if the people who own Jebediah would have waited until the clouds rolled it here around 7:30 we'd be almost out of winter but they did it at 7 am when there was still some early morning sun so we're screwed. This also now begs the question who might like some 'Wombat Helper' for dinner tonight....

Well we WERE going to talk about something else until a plane just landed on the New Jersey Turnpike
A small traffic plane has made a landing on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cherry Hill this morning and luckily nobody was injured. Granted, traffic is backed up for miles and miles but at least the pilot of the Cessna 152 was able to negotiate said traffic and make a picture perfect landing. The FAA says the reason for the landing was low oil pressure on the plane.
We're going to send Zoltron off in the Jersey City Desk News Copter and see what we can see.
