We think Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean Jr.might be getting ahead of himself on driverless cars

Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean Jr. (R-Union) is really excited about the driverless cars (some being sponsored by Google) and says New Jersey needs laws and rules and such for driverless cars and he thinks he should be the one to write them.

First off driverless cars are further away than you seem to think. Want to know the sticking point you either failed to address or avoided? Insurance. If Johnny has a driverless car that is being driven by Google, with roadmaps by Google, with cameras and laser sensors to keep you safe from say a company like Raytheon why should Johnny pay for insurance? Let Google and Raytheon. They're the ones guaranteeing the vehicles are safe and ready to roll without accident. Let Johnny put it to you another way State Senator Kean Jr.; If Johnny has to pay for the insurance HE will be driving his car. No way in hell will Johnny ever give up driving his own car (ever) but if you expect people to be driven around in a driverless car the state or someone else is paying the insurance.

Got that? You better or this driverless car lark will fail even bigger than we think it will. Johnny doesn't pay insurance on cab rides and he's not driving then. Mr. Kean if you think somebody else is going to drive the populace you'd better figure out the insurance and liability on such matters before you go all Jetsons. You'd also better plan for the fact some people, like Johnny, actually enjoy driving and aren't giving up the keys, especially with a Michigan driving pedigree. Maybe Mr. Kean Jr. isn't confident in his own driving. Maybe he gets askeered driving in the Garden State.

99% of us are just fine driving ourselves. The rest own Toyotas.

Google brings free Wi-Fi to Chelsea

Google, who is locally HQ'd in Chelsea, is offering up some of that "goes down easy" read FREE high speed Wi-Fi to Chelsea dwellers. Jordan Newman, a Google spokesman, told Mashable that the new Wi-Fi network is Google's way of "giving back to the community that we've been in for the past six years or so."

Yes we know those first five were touch-and-go, the wolf is at the door, lean start up years on the westsiiiiide. We kid because we love and this here blog is supported by Google. But just where are the boundaries of this "sorry we don't deliver there" internet electronic dog fence?

The network runs between Gansevoort St. and 19 St. from 8th Ave to the West Side Highway and in area public spaces, including the Chelsea Triangle, 14th Street Park and Gansevoort Plaza.

The secured network will also be used by businesses, residents and students in the area, and it will cover the outdoor areas of the Fulton Houses, a housing project owned by the New York City Housing Authority.

Does this mean Google is getting ready to start bringing their Google Fiber (Sounds like a 50's horror monster -- "Look out maw, it's the dad-gummed Google Fiber!") broadband service to the free people of NYC? Well the answer friends is a click on that above link away. It may surprise you.

Once again, Councilman Steve Fulop shows his value to our fair city

The one city councilman Jersey City can trust right now is working to try and improve the quality of life here while the others look to enrich their own bank accounts. Fulop is working to bring Google to Jersey City and encouraging city residents to log into Facebook and vote for our fair city to become one of the new Google test sites for an ultra high-speed broadband network.

Fulop wants enough support to come forward to ensure Google chooses Jersey City so they will put in fiber optics lines throughout the city making internet speeds much much much faster than those of Verizon FIOS or Comcast or AT&T offer. Comcast as some of you may have read throttles speed of users uploads and downloads and have themselves said that unlimited internet is not intended to be unlimited. Fulop said to show support to login to your Facebook account and enter the search term 'Google competition Jersey City.'
