It's wasn't exactly how a Wings fan would draw it up in losing today but also having Boston get embarrassed but over 25 years once in a while you might eek in. The longest streak in professional sports continues. For comparison two other successful teams recently also have playoff streaks. The Penguins are at 10 years and the Blackhawks 8.

The Rangers and Islanders are all set for the playoffs

The matchups are finally set for the first round of the NHL playoffs next week. The #1 Rangers will play #8 Pittsburgh and Crybaby Cindy Crosby whom the MSG fans will no doubt make feel right at home. The Islanders will face Washington with the old barn, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, hosting one last playoff series. More on the matchups later this week.

Late night open thread

Since NBC, the greedy and self absorbed National Broadcasting Company is right across the Hudson River, it's pertinent the Jersey City Desk tonight point out what jagoffs Jeff Zucker and the NBC family are being over rights to their NHL games. #1 it's our understanding they pay the NHL zero dollars and zero cents for the rights to broadcast the games and then make money selling ad time. That's the deal NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman helped negotiate but that's a rant for another day. Well they aren't letting the Penguins fans watch on the big screens outside Mellon Arena for those who want a sense of hockey community because it might cause a microscopic drop in ratings points which means a few less ad dollars for the peaCOCK network.

The Detroit Red Wings during the playoffs show the games on "JoeVision", or the big screens over center ice at Joe Louis Arena for away games. NBC is denying the right to hold "JoeVision" tomorrow night with game 6 of the NHL Final in Pittsburgh. The real kicker, and the point that should shame NBC's asshole beancounters to no end is when the Red Wings show the games at JLA, they charge the upwards of 15-20,000 fans $5 a head and ALL that money goes to charity, it always has. So, $75-100,000 will NOT be filling the coffers of charities in Detroit and the people who make money parking cars and selling hot dogs and soda pop won't get a paycheck that night.

So instead of looking out for the people who watch his network, Mr. Zucker has decided his advertisers are more important. That's fine, it's his and his network's call. We here at the Jersey City Desk just wanted to get that out there and let you the readers of the Tri-State area know that the next time you see an NBC affiliate run one of those "We're a part of the community and we really really care about our local viewership" and "WE CARE promos" they love to slather their airwaves with, understand, no, they really don't. They care more about the people selling you Honda's, beer and high fructose corn syrup products than they do about your community at large.

Apparently, the New York Times and writer Allen Salkin want us to feel the pain of the Wall Street crowd who while taking billions in taxpayer money might have to just make do on $500K a year. Apparently the NYT would like us to know that would entail putting their kids in public schools, buying a MetroPass and riding PATH trains, giving up chauffeured limos with drivers with guns. Apparently they have a lifestyle they are used to and we should feel bad for them. Look, do you know what we do to welfare recipients in America? We make them get time sheets signed off on for 15 minute intervals by a supervisor at whatever job the governments tells them they must have. We drug test them, we do home inspections. We should be doing the same to these Wall Street assholes. Welfare recipients aren't the ones who landed us in the recession, these poor spoiled brat Wall Street bankers are. Required reading here.

A drunken Jersey City cop, one Martin Abreu, represented his city by mowing down a group of pedestrians, killing one, Saturday night. Abreu has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and assault and driving while intoxicated while killing Marilyn Feng. Tell ya what New York, you can keep him locked up over there, we don't ever want him back. Throw the book at him.

Star-Ledger columnist Mark Diionno thinks the Garden State should start charging New York City for improving their air quality with that syrupy smell. We heartily agree.

Finally, later this afternoon, the Stanley Cup CHAMPION Detroit Red Wings head back to Pittsburgh to take on Cindy Crosby and the small potatoes Penguins. Johnny wonders if anyone around New Jersey and New York realizes the favor the Wings did for all of hockey to keep Crosby from the cup. If you think the NHL's pandering to him now is bad, imagine if they'd found a way to get Sid the 'pissy pants' Kid the cup like they tried to do last season. You KNOW you tried to get him the cup Gary Bettman, EPIC FAIL.
