Just one hour until Jersey City's own St. Peter's Peacocks take on Fairfield. Fairfield and St. Peter's were both 12-8 in conference play with the Stags with an 18-12 ovrall record while the Jersey City Five are 14-15 on the entire season.

St. Peter's wins their last regular season game, clinches winning conference record

The Peacocks won today at the Yanitelli Center over Fairfield 72-68. Trevis Wyche made a 3-point play with 40 seconds left to bring glory to St. Peter's.

Quadir Welton scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his tenth double-double of the season. That's nothing short of awesome.

There are four MAAC games tomorrow to finish up seeding for the conference tournament and St. Peter's is assured of nothing less than fourth seed with their winning 12-8 conference record. The Peacocks are 14-15 overall.

That's Right! St. Peter's takes down Seton Hall in OT

The Pride of Jersey City®, the St. Peter's Peacocks beat Seton Hall at the Prudential Center yesterday 83-80. The win by the Peacocks breaks a 17 year drought against The Hall.

Desi Washington had an incredible game, going off for 34 points including the winning 3 point basket in overtime. The only thing putting a damper on this wonderful win for St. Peter's (3-6) was Jamel Fields of SPU picking up a knee injury. Marvin Dominique also impressed for St. Peter's with 23 of his 25 points coming in the second half.

St. Peter's is at Hartford next Sunday the 22nd before coming home to the Yanitelli Center for a 2pm tip on Saturday December 28. Let's fill that place!

St. Peter's at home today at 2pm

So get your butts over to Kennedy Boulevard and make your way to the Yanitelli Center for a 2pm tipoff with Fairfield. The Peacocks are having a tough season and since there are no football games for you to use as an excuse bunky, go show the Peacocks some love. The Pride of Jersey City with a win can jump up two places in the standings.

Oh and the guys on Kennedy Boulevard are not "game valets", they are stealing your car.

St. Peter's topped NEC champs LIU-Brooklyn last night in an offensive show

St. Peter's hasn't exactly been an offensive machine this season but last night The Pride of Jersey City were en fuego on their way to an 80-67 beat down of LIU-Brooklyn, who won the NEC last year. Desi Washington was really lights out for the Peacocks. He had 28 while Yvon Raymond had a very strong game as well. St. Peter's was a little streaky last night and you can't always count on those nice runs but boy when you get a night when they happen it's frosting on the cake.

St. Peter's is 5-5 (as is LIU-Brooklyn for those keeping score) and play at home again this Saturday against Loyola of Chicago Illinoize who start three players with the last name of Ditka. Come on out to the Yanitelli Center at 2pm and see some great college action. It's not like the Devils are offering you anything.

Let's congratulate the St. Peter's Peacocks as they spread their wings

Our good friends over off Kennedy Blvd. are no longer a college. As of later today St. Peter's becomes St. Peter's UNIVERSITY. They will join Seton Hall and Georgian Court (huh whaaaa?) as the only two Catholic universities in the Garden State. The Star-Ledger has more on ow this came about:

The leap from college to university comes after years of expansion at the 3,000-student school, which began adding graduate programs in the 1990s. Earlier this year, Rochelle Hendricks, the state’s higher education secretary, approved Saint Peter’s application for university status.

It has been a long road. The first discussions about becoming a university began fifteen long years ago and in earnest four years ago. Students? Oh they're fired up:

"University sounds a lot bigger than college," said Amanda Schaffer, 21, a senior graphic design major from Jersey City. "The first thing I plan to do is get a t-shirt that says ‘Saint Peter’s University.’"

Is St. Peter's College moving on up?

To the world of university stature? It's now possible since St. Peter's has applied to the state to become a university. “We have applied for university status and we are waiting with baited breath,” Eugene J. Cornacchia, President of St. Peter's said.

Were you, like many on staff here wondering about the difference between a college and university? Well here you go seekers of knowledge:

To be considered a university in New Jersey, an educational institution has to offer baccalaureate degrees in a broad range of academic disciplines, and advanced degrees in at least three academic or professional fields, according to the commission guidelines.

We think bestowing university status on St. Peter's College would definitely be a good thing and could raise awareness of the school above what it is now. A decision should be made in the next couple months.

If it's November it must be time for St. Peter's basketball

At least the MAAC did last year as St. Peter's won the MAAC Tourney and headed off to the Big Dance for the first time since 1995. While their dance card was a short one in losing to Purdon't, St. Peter's is eager to get back to work and the business of winning. Now, winning might just be a subjective term down Kennedy Boulevard as the Peacocks lost 78% of their scoring due to graduations and one team dismissal. Still, head coach John Dunne remains upbeat about the upcoming grind:

“Once you win a championship — especially one that you’ve wanted so bad — now that you’ve tasted it, you want the next one more.”

A hearty best of luck for the Pride of Jersey City this year. The Peacocks begin the 2011-12 season tomorrow evening at Buffalo.

It's win or go home for the year now for St. Peter's basketball

In failing to win either of their last two regular season games, the Peacocks finished 4th in the MAAC and will play in the 4 vs. 5 matchup Saturday in Bridgeport Ct. at 2:45 pm against Loyola of Md. in their opening MAAC tournament game.

If the regular season is any indicator expect a close game between St. Peter's and Loyola. St. Peter's won at Loyola by three points while Loyola won at the Yanitelli Center by two points. The rubber game of this series will be played on a neutral court, we'll just see who wants the loose balls more.

It's really a win the conference tournament or go home as it's not looking like St. Peter's, even with two wins in the tournament are going to the NIT with a 19-14 record. Rider, Iona and Fairfield all have 20 wins and only one is likely to go to the NCAA tournament even with this year's expanded field. To even get on teevee you'll recall St. Peter's had to play a game at the Yanitelli Center at 6 am. You can now see how the NCAA and ESPN view the MAAC.

St. Peter's continues to roll on

The Pride of Jersey City®, the St. Peter's Peacock's men's basketball team topped Loyola in the Windy City yesterday (wasn't it maybe windier HERE?) 71-67. A big win for the team and a good showing for the MAAC in this non-conference showdown.

Now, the big games come this week. St. Peter's, Iona (Friday night at 9 pm at the Yanitelli Center) and Rider (next Sunday on the road) ALL of whom have 11-5 conference records and somebody's gotta go home sad so the logjam at 2nd in the MAAC will be broken. St. Peter's needs to win at least one of these games heading into the conference tourney if for no other reason than confidence when one of these teams show up across the tourney bracket.

St. Peter's tonight has a huge road game

The Pride of Jersey City®, the St. Peter's men's basketball team is at Marist tonight for a 7:30 pm tip off. With a win the Peacocks can improve to 10-4 in the MAAC and 15-10 overall. With first place Fairfield coming to the Yanitelli Center for a Sunday matinee showdown, tonight's game is a MUST WIN. St. Peter's needs to pile on as many wins as possible so that if, heaven forbid, they don't win the MAAC Tournament there is still an NIT chance. Hey, having an extra week of practice can be invaluable going into next season rather than just having your season die on the vine at the end of the regular schedule.

Big game for St. Peter's today at the Yanitelli Center vs. Rider

That's right kids, at 2 pm today the 'Pride of Jersey City®', the St. Peter's Peacocks will be in action at home over at the Yanitelli Center for a huge MAAC matchup with Rider. Both St. Peter's and Rider come into the game tied for second place in the MAAC with identical 7-3 records. With a win today and a game next Friday at conference bottom feeder Niagara, the Peacocks would be looking strong for a #2 seed in the conference tourney.

St. Peter's dumps Monmouth 58-34

It was a complete rout here at the Yanitelli Center, the Peacocks gave 'em hell and then some. #4 Ryan Bacon, and #15 Wesley Jenkins set the tone early, and we mean early. St. Peter's improves to 1-1 overall with the 24 point win.

Gotta say, this sure was fun. Arriving about 5:35 am and seeing everyone who was all dressed up and had been up partying all night. Now, to catch a cab back to Journal Square for the train ride up to Grove Street. Thanks St. Peter's you've made lovely hosts.

St. Peter's has this one about put away

As Johnny learns to post on his new phone. The excitement here outside the Yanitelli Center was at a fever pitch with costumes, coffee and darkness on the edge of town but now the Peacocks are proving waaaaay too much for Monmouth. Everyone here seems really into the 6 am idea of things and it IS fun actually. Johnny has overheard from a couple St. Peter's students classes are somewhat optional today.

41-25 St. Peter's leads here in the second half

Seton Hall hits late shot, beats St. Peter's 53-51

For 39 minutes plus last night at the Prudential Center, St. Peter's gave giant Seton Hall all they could handle. Leading 51-50 St. Peter's had to watch The Hall's Eugene Harvey hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer to lift the Big East Pirates to a 53-51 victory.

As we all know St. Peter's starts at home Tuesday morning at 6 am at the Yanitelli Center and as mentioned, ESPN will be carrying the game live. Johnny IS planning on being in attendance to get some pictures and give you all some live updates at this basketball McMuffin kind of day...

St. Peter's basketball, don't forget kids, the fun is just about to start

The St. Peter's Peacocks of the MAAC and Jersey City residents begin their hoops season Friday night at the Prudential Center vs. Seton Hall but that really cool special live ESPN Game is at 6 am next Tuesday morning at the Yanitelli Center. You read that right, in order to get themselves on live teevee, St. Peter's is playing a 6 am game here next Tuesday morning.

Set your clocks for the St. Peter's vs Monmouth basketball game--No, really, set your clocks

Smaller and mid-sized colleges will do anything to get on the golem that is ESPN and have their games shown live. St. Peter's is no exception. In order to get in on the College Basketball Tip-off Marathon, wherein ESPN will show 19 games in 24 hours on their network of stations, St. Peter's has agreed to change the staring time of their November 17th game vs Monmouth to....6 am. Yes, not PM but AM. As in 'wakey wakey eggs and bac-y' 6 am.

The game will be broadcast like from St. Peter's Yanitelli Center so if you simply aren't a 'go to a basketball game at 6 am' kinda person it will be on the teevee. Johnny has pretty much decided he's gonna go, since he gets up at 5:30 in the morning as it is, why not have some basketball with your coffee...

Sadly, St. Peter's basketball season came to an end yesterday

The St. Peter's Peacocks, the pride of Jersey City, lost their quarterfinal game in the MAAC tournament 67-58 to Rider. The Peacocks will end their season at 11-19 overall and 8-10 in the MAAC. They really had shown improvement over the last few weeks of the season, winning 5 of their last 7 games. This bodes very well for St. Peter's as they will return everyone but two seniors, Akeem Gooding and Ismaila Traore, next year. Big things are brewing in Yanitelli Center next season, we can feel it. Is a MAAC title within reach next year? Could be Peacock fans, could be.

St. Peter's Peacocks are on a three game winning steak

Jersey City's own St. Peter's Peacocks are on a three game winning streak in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and have improved their record to 9-17 with a 6-10 conference record. The latest victory was over Marist College 72-62 and unlike the last two victories, the Peacocks salted this one away earlier than their last possession. Some great defense held Marist without a 2 point field goal for the first 13 minutes. St. Peter's coach John Dunne said defense is the thing that's driving the team; "We are defending a lot better, we are focusing on our game-plan a lot better..."

Akeem Gooding had 23 points for St. Peter's.

St. Peter's is home again at the Yanitelli Center February 27, vs league foe Iona. They next play on the road at Youngstown State on Feburary 21.
