Engine 22 was sent on a call when at Rose and Woodlawn they met up with an unexpected Back Knight if you will, a sinkhole. None shall pass it was right as the truck drove right in but luckily there were no serious injuries. Follow this handy link for the Jersey Journal photo story on this.

Won't it be news when things like this aren't news
The Jersey City Fire Department has promoted its first female firefighter to the position of fire battalion chief, congratulations Constance Zappella. Zapella took a few moments to talk to the young girls of Jersey City and what she'd say to them about her new job:
Zappella, 38, said she's working on having the most successful career with the department. Asked what her message would be to young Jersey City girls with dreams of becoming a firefighter, Zappella said she would tell them to "become one of us."
"I'm very feminine, I'm obviously female, but don't even think about that," she said after the ceremony. "Go in, if you really want this job and you really want to make a difference in your city, go in with a positive attitude. Forget, put it on the shelf that you're a female and become one of us."

Jersey City, how's the parking where you live
We're gonna guess and say it's tight and tough to park in Jersey City. Streets get rundown, construction companies take-up spots all over our neighborhoods and if you even just leave your car for a second to run in and do something it's gonna be ticketed or towed, are we right? Johnny thinks we'd all agree that Jersey City has some pretty fast moving tow trucks that'll swoop in and take your car if it's even there illegally for a few seconds.
Unless of course you can just take a city owned vehicle, in this case a Jersey City Fire Department riding with a Deputy Chief sticker, park illegally for 15 minutes and go grab yourself some lunch. That's right, turn on your red and blue "an emergency is happening" flashers, then put on your yellow flashers and go grab a sammich, who cares, as long as the Deputy Chief's truck gets what it needs.
Think long and hard about this video Jersey City next time you get hassled about parking.

For those who enjoy such things...UPDATED
For those of you who like to listen in on the emergency broadcast channels channel 460.5500 has the heroes at the Bayonne FD fighting what sounds like one big fire. Best to them on this horridly hot day in their fight.
UPDATE 1:22pm "Somebody is stealing water we need to find another main." Doesn't sound good. In general it sounds like getting a steady supply of water to this fire is an issue.
UPDATE 3:12, the fire was in Jersey City on Boyd Ave. and 10 firefighters have been injured in this 4 alarm blaze. We apologize for the mislabeling of the town but Johnny was listening to Bayonne FD feeds and they were apparently assisting.
Update 3:31 pm The Jersey Journal has an incredible photo journal of this event. From firefighters battling down to the last bit of energy they could squeeze from themselves (heat index currently ยบ108), to the incredible pictures of the fire itself taken from a roof cross the street.
They are also reporting this may have been a situation where the fire started in the basement at 40 Boyd in an illegal apartment set-up and work may have been being done on that unit. Stay tuned.
Does the comment made by a firefighter about somebody stealing water have anything to do with this possible illegal apartment?

How about some love for the JCFD this morning?
Not only do they rush into burning buildings to save lives, they ACT when they see their fellow citizens being attacked. That's right, firefighters with Engine Company 22 yesterday saw a man being yelled at by four hoods. When Captain Jack Johnson and firefighters John Amato, Wilson Carrera and Jonathan Rosado looked into the rear-view mirror after passing by they saw the four losers begin attacking the man. They turned the fire truck around and came back to help the victim and chased after the attackers catching one and turning him over to the Jersey City police.
The group had stolen the victim's cellphone, computer and other valuables and left him with a bleeding nose and swollen eyes so we are very thankful these Jersey City firefighters acted as they did. A tip of the Jersey City Desk cap to Captain Jack Johnson and firefighters John Amato, Wilson Carrera and Jonathan Rosado, showing the best Jersey City has to offer.

Heroes all, Jersey City firefighters save a man from a burning building
While conducting a sweep inside a burning building with zero visibility and high heat, four Jersey City firefighters came across an unconscious man in the basement at 17 Suburbia Terrace early Monday. Capt. Paul Drennan, Capt. Robert Daley and firefighters Robert Belfiore and Paul Cerniglia got the man out of the building in time to save his life though he remains in critical condition.
It's comforting to know should the worst ever happen the JCFD is coming in despite 500+ degree temperatures in some cases.

Next time Rob, try "No" or "I quit"
Jersey City Fireman Robert Verpent had his bail set at 25 large earlier today over a case where he actually punched his Fire Captain Frances Reynolds right in the mush WHILE battling a three alarm blaze in July. Reynolds ordered Verpent (which rhymes with serpent) back into the building to help fellow firefighters battle the blaze. Instead of quitting, Verpent swung and connected with the captain.
Johnny's never been in a fire situation, he's sure never been ordered back into a burning building. Harrowing times to be sure. But Johnny is also not going to punch out his boss over it. Look dude, you're a fireman, if you don't want to fight fires or help your fellow firemen out, that's a pretty piss poor fireman in our opinion. Now you've done gone and landed yourself in the pokey.
Now, the Jersey City Fire Department can't be completely stunned over his actions, they DID look the other way when Verpent was previously charged with domestic violence AND clubbing a fellow firefighter with a frying pan in the firehouse for which he was officially reprimanded. Guess the guy finally went off eh JCFD? Tell us you're surprised.
