If it's Earth Day and it's Hoboken, it's the Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q

And it's Earth Day!

One of Hoboken's signature events, the event that tops even their constantly changing working paper on what St. Patrick's Day is for family fun, the Hoboken Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q is being held along Sinatra Drive. With Boy Scout troops from Jersey City, Newark, Bayonne, Union City, Secaucus all out collecting tires from their towns to add to this year's tire fire promises to be the Mile Square City's best evah!

Other events are planned of course today all over Hoboken including a burning tire roll down First St., The Hoboken Conservatory of Science will have a special booth set up for kids called "So you wanna light your first tire..." full of tips on safe ways to handle gasoline and matches. The Cake Boss will deliver a special cake in the shape of burning smoking tires to Mayor Dawn Zimmer before the annual pushing of the burning tire pyres out into the Hudson River.

Sooty the Clown will be on hand (He clears his calendar for this event) to make balloon animals from balloons with lead paint. Sooty will also lead the children's chorus in the singing of "Smoke on the Water" which they're hoping to bring in under twelve minutes this year.

So come on out to FuHo today, bring the kids and tell the neighbors as this wonderful piece of Americana steps off once again. Free admission if you bring a tire.

Residents all over Hoboken are putting on their Tuesday best clothes and heading on down to Sinatra Drive for the annual Earth Day Tire Fire and BBQ!

The Hoboken FD has been collecting tires from the Hudson River all year for this year's Tire Fire theme: "Rubber in the River". Over 1000 tires will be lit as residents and visitors sing with special emcee Sooty the Clown to the Deep Purple classic, 'Smoke on the Water'. A spokesperson for the Hoboken Fire Department tells the Jersey City Desk this year's fire should set the record and burn past the June 5th record.

The city is filling up a barge with gas cans and Hoboken residents will get to try and recreate Bronn's most excellent flaming arrow shot from the Blackwater scene in Game of Thrones. One shot per resident. The winner of course gets to name the barge, or what's left of it, which becomes FuHo's new storm surge blocker.

Happy Independence Day America! What's that? You want to spend it in Hoboken?

And Hoboken will host thousands of their closest friends as they do twice a year as the Macy's fireworks are set to blow at 9:23pm. First off, before we get to our friends we love to kid, Bayonne and Kearny also have great shows tonight:

Bayonne: A concert Wednesday with John Christian and Soiree will begin at 7 p.m. at 16th Street Park. There will be inflatable rides for children and fireworks are scheduled for dusk. bayonnenj.org/parks.htm or (201) 858-6122.
Kearny: The Fourth of July celebration Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Field on Belgrove Drive will feature cartoon characters, balloon art, mimes, a magic show and inflatable attractions. The Garden State Concert Band will perform at 7 p.m., with a fireworks display at dusk from the Frank A. Vincent Marina. kearnynj.org or (201) 955-7400.

Now, if you're like many you'll hopefully be driving into Hoboken starting, mmmm, now. Johnny says hopefully as he has all of the Hoboken emergency channels on speed dial today on his listening device of doom. Driving? It's never been easier. You know Hoboken, EZ In-EZ Out. It was almost their nickname instead of The Mile Square City. You'd be surprised how many cars The Mile Square City can fit. If you insist on using the trains NJ Transit and PATH will accommodate you with extra trips but you'd seriously better get going. And once you get off the trains RUN for God's sake, RUN down to the river flailing your lawnchairs and food coolers to get the best vantage spots. Kind of like the raw army recruits in Bill Murray's platoon in Stripes running willy nilly down a muddy embankment into trees, logs, and in John Candy's case, into the underbrush.

FuHo officials remind the citizens on this hot and humid day no alcohol is allowed in public places but who are we to tell people in Hoboken how to drink? Also of safety note the "Who can sneak in the biggest firework into the crowd" contest has been cancelled after last year's unfortunate Denny Pratt tragedy.

Our old friend Sooty the Clown will once again be master of ceremonies over by the last part of Sinatra Drive that hasn't collapsed into the Hudson River for the kids 10 and under who love playing sparkler tag. Sooty reminds you the fun's not over when the sparkler goes out. Just listen to the cool noise it makes when it hits the river.

After the good people at Macy's (and a tip of the cap to them, they give pretty selflessly) give their amazing show it's time to get the hell out. The people in cars will disperse in mere minutes while the trains will back up. So if you came with a giant group why not make your departure through downtown Hoboken a memorable one? Line up and go all Stannis Baratheon and yell "Come with me and take this city!" and begin the charge to the PATH.

Have a good old American celebration and quality time with your fellow Americans today friends, if only for one day and one wonderful night.

The annual Hoboken Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q has been postponed

Color local Hoboken entertainer Sooty the Clown crushed. The annual Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q in FuHo has been postponed due to the heavy rains today and tonight. Since wet tires really just smolder and you don't get the flames needed for the big effect, no new date has been set by Mayor Dawn Zimmer's office.

Johnny really will miss that clear cutting contest downtown.

It's Earth Day which can only mean one thing -- The Hoboken Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q

That's right, it's FuHo's annual Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q. Last year's event was a huge success and drew people from as far away as Weehawken and Bayonne. Mayor Dawn Zimmer is looking forward to this year's 'Flaming Wheel Roll' where tires are filled with gas, lit and then tapped along Frank Sinatra Blvd by kids using the same idea as the old hoop rolls made so popular in dreary early America. We're pretty sure Zimmer is looking forward to the Flaming Wheel Roll, and we're willing to take a "Stop calling here" as proof.

Popular FuHo entertainer Sooty the Clown will make a return visit to make all the kids uncomfortable. Another favorite from last year, the Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade simulator, will be available for adults only. A new event this year, the Oak Tree Clear Cut Competition will be held at 6 pm and contestants are asked to gather outside city hall for a plastic disposable number by 5:30.

It's fun for the entire family. Hoboken city officials have said they hope to surpass the length of last year's fire which wasn't out until June 5th.

Come on out to the Hoboken Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q, we've got fun for the whole family

Stevens Park will be the site for this year's Hoboken Earth Day Tire Fire and Bar-B-Q to help celebrate Hoboken's contributions to Earth Day. There will be fun for the kids as they can actually throw little kiddie molotov cocktails to stoke the tire fire (which isn't expected to go out this year until mid-June), they can also meet Sooty The Clown and have fun over at the glass busting booth. Adults will love the beer tent and real life Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade simulator.
