Jersey City, we need to talk...

Today our Mayor Steve Fulop wrote an editorial to the Jersey Journal where he espoused a very scary ideology, one we as city residents need to reign back in.

Fulop, and we do not want to misquote him, said "With hindsight, if I could do it over, I would have shared with media the reprehensible action but asked journalists not to report the name of the killer."

Um, the reprehensible action is ALL our business Mayor. Remember us? Yeah we live here too. Ask journalists NOT to report his name? In what world of American press freedoms does THAT happen? In what concentric circle of hell does that take place? This mayor really has a messed up idea of what he's able to do under our constitution. He consistently quotes the Marines as if Jersey City should be run like an offshoot of the Marines:

"As we said in the Marine Corps, we can’t leave anyone behind, and in this case we are missing some people at some level."

No, the city government cannot run like, or be modeled after the Marines. In the same way every four years some candidate with puffed up credentials says they will run Washington D.C. like a business and bring America back, it's not a business. Sorry, American government cannot be run like a business. It's not set up to run like a business. The idea of government is not to make a profit and provide returns to shareholders. No more than a city or large scale government operation can't be a business it also cannot be run like a branch of the armed services. It just doesn't work that way.

As for the comments that he'd tell the media not to give a killer his or her 'due" Johnny thinks that 99% of the people here know the killer is getting no "due" at all but shame upon he and his family. Try having a little faith on our city mayor, it's one thing you have done an awful job of. We don't need nanny-mayor, we're big people. Deal with it.

On a side note your little dig in your editorial towards demoted Police Chief Cowan (to damaged morale in the police department,) was petty. You've said this time and again. Not the kind of thing that belongs in a "let's go forward as a city" letter.

We simply do not want or cannot have Steve Fulop thinking he can decide (or have any part in) which names get released. It's not his job, it will never BE his job. We have an independent press for a reason and we're quite shocked our current mayor doesn't seem to recognize it.

Jersey City, we must ALL fight this new riverside casino and track

We here at the Jersey City Desk cannot believe Mayor Steve Fulop, for one minute, would support this obscene idea to let a New England-area development group right down by the Goldman Sachs Building put up a garish 95 story casino, with an adjoining 107,500-seat motor sports stadium that could devastate Liberty State Park and make a very bad driving situation much much worse.

First off, the Mayor seems to have drunk the "This project will create a kabillion jobs!" Kool-Aid which of course is never true. Fulop sounds like the only reason to oppose this heinous plan would be the track: "I still need more information regarding the racetrack to be confident it will not harm Liberty State Park. This development would create 25,000 jobs and over $5 billion of investment."

So as you can see which side the mayor is already on, former investment banker that he is.

Johnny's not the only one who loves Jersey City that is sounding the alarms: 

"It would seem that inevitable traffic jams would severely negatively impact the public access to Liberty State Park as well as tourist access to the ferries that go to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty," FOLSP President Sam Pesin said. "We ask that Mayor Fulop demand comprehensive traffic and environmental impact studies alongside public hearings on this project."

This plan MUST be stopped Jersey City, by ANY means necessary. Look, the mayor has already checked out. He's already hiring staff for the very purpose of running for governor. When Fulop does run for governor he'd love to point to a big shiny thing. Trying to develop underdeveloped portions of his city won't tickle voters at the polls. Swimming the Hudson River won't make him Governor. No, instead Fulop would love to show them a giant shiny building with great video and pictures of smiling people around it, and of the track not causing traffic issues etc.

Also Jersey City, from what we know of the Jersey City Planning Commission is that regardless of which safeguards are put in place, despite what the developers are told, they will just go back to the Jersey City Planning Commission and whine and snivel and the JCPC will hold them close and say "It's OK, do what you want, we have been giving no shits about the people who pay us now for decades."

It's up to US Jersey City, this project must be stopped right f-ing now. Thanks to the current governor you can just gamble your money away on an iPad from the comfort of your own home. To those of you elsewhere in New Jersey that might want a big casino across from NYC, when you come to Jersey City and pay taxes you can have a say. Until then just shut your talk holes.

Tropical Strom Andrew, the first named tropical storm of 2014 is expected to impact New Jersey and the Jersey Shore on Friday, July 4th with heavy rain, heavy winds and heavy surf. The storm is located off the shore of Florida currently and is slowly making it's way north.

STRESS! It makes interns write rude headlines doesn't it? Jersey City was just ranked fifth in the nation in being stressed out. Jersey City's biggest suburb, New York City, was ranked second. What kind of stupid annoying factors does it take to stress a city out? Oh dear god just read will you?

Jersey City had the third-highest commute time on the list (37 minutes on average) and was also third in population density, with 16,793 people per square mile, the report said. The city's total population was 247,597 according to the 2010 Census.

Jersey City tied was with New York for average hours worked per week at 39.4, but ranked higher for crime with 3,062 total incidents reported per 100,000 residents, the report said.

So everyone taking up all the roadways all the time and you fools who commit crimes are making the rest of us CRAZY! If you get robbed while commuting what, just shit yourself? Well?

That census number isn't even freaking right, Jersey City's population is exploding, like our RAGE!

Sounds like the old Jersey City gravy train is back up and running

Mayor Steve Fulop has sent our city spokesmodel Jennifer Morrill to say this isn't his fault. Ward F councilwoman Diane Coleman, whom we have partly to thank for the continued gravy train, is too cowardly/busy? to release a statement on it.

So what is IT we're talking about? One Eugene McKnight, a former campaign manager for Coleman, just picked himself up a tony city job. He gets a yearly salary of $75,000 for working for the Jersey City Employment & Training Program.

Hmmmm, $75K, the amount McKnight ALREADY OWES Jersey City for his 1992 conviction on welfare fraud charges. He's paid back NONE of the $75K he owes from 1992 AND just landed a city job. He hasn't even tried to pay it back! 

So why should the other qualified candidates be discarded for this guy who shows his contempt for the city he works for daily? Again, Diane Coleman refuses to say. Steve Fulop sends out his spokesperson with a boilerplate "Don't look at me" comment.

Steve, Diane, here we thought the Healy days were over. Guess not.

Walking by the Pavarini-McGovern construction site over at 111 First St. near an area where workers park Johnny saw the most amazing things lying on the ground as if dumped from somebody's work truck. A week's supply of 5 Hour Energy drinklets and a Mohawk vodka bottle. We're not sure what the vapor and glass items are, perhaps an e-cigarette setup or good lord, something nefarious.

When you're working hard don't let that 2:30 feeling get to you, just pop some 5 Hour Energy and mix it with that cool refreshing taste of Mohawk. Then go work on what will be someone's home one day.

The FIFTH water main break in two days has really started to piss some people off

And by people we mean the mayor and most likely anyone else living in Jersey City. He's just saying what we're all thinking. In a pointed tweet this morning, Mayor Fulop said, and we tweetquote:

"A city our size needs service and care and #respect from service/utility providers. @UnitedWaterNJ #JerseyCity"

Yes United Water, we the people would also like to know how as a city we manage five breaks in two days, and we're talking large breaks. How much of your precious time and energy are put into pressure testing because it would seem when one goes another upstream isn't far behind. We'd suggest a thorough testing before a pipe bursts near a PATH station or another intersection starts looking like Niagara Falls. Capice?

Time for a few city officials to come take their medicine

Mayor Steve Fulop, Council President Rolando Lavarro and Ward F councilwoman Diane Coleman all were quite vocal about former Mayor Healy's plan to borrow $9.5 million to pay for city retirement costs. Fulop went as far, according to the Jersey Journal's own Terrence T. McDonald:

"...He even urged gadfly Yvonne Balcer last December to come to the council meeting to “speak against” Healy’s proposed borrowing plan..."

But now that Fulop is Mayor and Lavarro and Coleman are on his ticket suddenly they all support what they were against when Healy was mayor. What's that called again? What is it when you say one thing a lot about how bad it is then when you are in charge you totally change your mind? Oh yes, FLIP FLOPPING. That sound you hear this morning isn't so much a biting November wind as it is the sound of Jerramiah Healy laughing with a hearty "I told you so."

Here's Council President Lavarro showing that unless his side said it, it's not to be trusted:

“The bottom line for me is that I trust this administration more,” he said, laughing. “I trust the numbers being presented to me.”

You may have laughed last night Mr. Council President but it's not funny at all. Being beholden to one side never is. Mayor Fulop, have a napkin and wipe that egg off your face. Councilwoman Coleman, well, sadly we kind of expect this kind of thing from you after the ham-handed way you ran for city council.

So the city borrows $9.5 million to pay retirement costs and hopefully a valuable lesson gets learned by everyone.

Spectra's disaster-in-waiting pipeline is set to open November 1

Johnny's against this, Mayor Fulop is against this, former Mayor Healy fought hard against this, pretty much anyone who has seen pictures of Dresden in 1945 is against this. Spectra Energy's 30 inch high-pressure natural gas pipeline will begin in earnest by November 1st. Let's hear from Spectra first today because Johnny's feeling merciful:

Spectra officials have argued that the pipeline will provide clean and affordable natural gas to the region in critical need of additional energy supply. It will be the safest in North America.

Got that? "to the region"

It's time to play Hudson County's favorite online game show "To the Region!"

When Spectra Energy says this will provide clean and affordable natural gas "To the Region" do they mean:

A) Bayonne
B) Hudson County
C) New York City

If you guessed New York City, well played, of course they get a Tywin Lannister share of the benefit. OK, time for our double point round.

Which area will bear the most risk "To the Region" if something goes wrong and blows up real good:

A) New York City
B) Delaware
c) Jersey City

If you guessed Jersey City you are absolutely correct but we'd also have accepted the Hudson River and area water supply. Alright, time for our final question. IF this goes sideways and explodes or sprays down an area in gas what will Spectra Energy's response "To the Region" be?

A) Spectra Energy immediately begins filing court briefs in friendly courts trying to limit liability.

Now, this is how Spectra Energy tests their pipeline. Tell us if you signed on for this (That's a trick question, nobody truly honestly got a chance to stop this project, it was rubberstamped from the get go):

Spectra has indicated to Jersey City officials that natural gas will be released into the atmosphere during the testing phase at three areas: Pacific Avenue near Grand Street; Burma Road near Liberty State Park; and at 17th and Coles streets.

City fire officials will be on standby for each release.

FUN! Let's also make sure we remember all the hard working trade workers who appeared in the Spectra Energy ads who said without these jobs the area would crater. Remember those names and faces friends. They helped bring this to you.

PATH service is back to normal after the shooting at Newport this morning -- UPDATED!

Stupid people had guns on the PATH this morning. A stupid person decided someone had been disrespected which led to three people getting shot. Stupid people with bad aim rode the PATH this morning. One shot in the ankle, one shot in the leg and one shot in the hand. Like we said, stupid people.

What the hell, losers? 5:30 in the morning. What could possibly piss you off that early? Bad McMuffin? Just utter dotars. Disrespected? Giving a really great transportation line a bad name folks. This is exactly the kind of thing Mayor Fulop does not need in trying to raise awareness of Jersey City and encourage businesses and people from NYC to move here and expand the tax base. We fully support throwing the whole weight of the law at these losers. No plea bargains. None. Run these idiots up the nearest flagpole and let them dangle for all to see.

Oh, and as the headline says, PATH has now been reopened.
