The New York Times took a somewhat condescending look at New Jersey in a piece that shows the competition for Super Bowl events and sponsors is already being played between New Jersey and the other state. Well, not so much state at all, just that big city. The Times points out almost looking down their noses at the Garden State events that yes of course all the celebrities and glamour will be in NYC because duh. They even sound a bit like Robert Duvall as Colonel William Kilgore in Apocalypse Now who says of the North Vietnamese when, during the famous helicopter attack scene, spits out incredulously "These people never give up." Sorry we're trying to have a good time with the Super Bowl New York Times, and god forbid we draw someone away from that Broadway football experience complete with Angry Drunken Don't Tickle Me Elmo and a super bowl of gumbo from Bubba Gump's ("Eat where the Saints players refuse to eat"®).
The article mentioned events in New Jersey having difficulty drawing sponsors. But not once did they mention Jersey City which makes Johnny ask our city administration, people are going to be aware that Jersey City has the best access to NYC, brilliant restaurants and a view to die for riiiiight? Riiiiiiight? Maybe a well placed viral ad campaign, maybe a couple well positioned billboards advertising such. So maybe you only grab a few thousand, it all helps. Governor Christie, well we need you to be Governor Christie and make SURE everyone knows where this game is being played. You gotta book a Saturday Night Live spot to get the message out? Do it!
So yes, NYC prepares to take the lion's share of the attention which should give Garden Staters all the more impetus to do what Johnny does and rightly call them the New Jersey Giants and New Jersey Jets.
We're stronger than the advertising storm!

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer takes to Twitter to yell at helicopters
Maybe you follow the Mayor of Hoboken, the Honorable Dawn Zimmer, on Twitter. Then you know about the headline. If you're not into the Twitter that's fine but here is what she said:
Dawn Zimmer @dawnzimmernj 3h
Outrageous number of helicopters flying over NJ & NOT NYC. If NY wants tourist helicopters then keep them on your side!
She used an exclamation point so it's yelling alright. She does make a point, a point we folk on the sunset side of the Hudson River can discuss. Do the sight-seeing helicopters stay on the Jersey side while coming nowhere near NYC? Don't a lot of these helicopters depart and land from the South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan though? Living near there would suck. You'd get 'Nam flashbacks even if you didn't go.
If Johnny were running things in Hoboken, which he is not, he'd tell residents to put really offensive 'greetings' to the helicoptourists on rooftops. Really offensive.

It's Oscar Sunday
And good readers we'd love to know some of YOUR favorite movies that may or may not have won the Best Picture Academy Award, some of your favorite actors and actresses and maybe you'd like to share some of your most hated Oscar snubs. Johnny will start that category off by wondering how in the fresh hell Kramer vs. Kramer beat Apocalypse Now for best picture. Another of Johnny's hacked off Oscar moments was Joaquin Phoenix somehow NOT winning the Best Supporting Actor statue for his otherworldly performance of Emperor Commodus in Gladiator. Johnny most likely WOULD have been tuning in tonight if the Academy hadn't lost their minds and not nominated Mila Kunis for Black Swan. Stop giving out gift bags to rich people and start nominating those most worthy AND give the viewers at home an 'eye candy bag' with Ms. Kunis.
So Johnny hopes Natalie Portman wins but past that doesn't really much care. Your thoughts?

Let's actually discuss movies and films you think got pimped on the Best Picture Award
OK, there are two GLARING mistakes the Academy has made in Johnny's eyes (Actually three but we'll get to that).
Which movies do YOU think got the shaft? Anything you're still mad about?
Here's Johnny's short list; In 1979 the Academy must have gone on a three day bender and the male voters must have had a bad case of Meryl Streep love when they somehow managed to give the Best Picture award to Kramer vs. Kramer over the Hollywood epic Apocalypse Now. How did this happen? Anyone? Anyone? Apocalypse Now has become so iconic people quote it, you can't hear Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkries' without thinking about it. It's battle scenes are almost unmatched. Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Laurence Fishburne and Harrison Ford lost to Kramer vs Kramer. Uh huh.
Johnny's other peeve is 1996 when The English Patient beat the Coen Brothers classic Fargo. Just think about that for a minute. Heinous.
Johnny's third and lesser complaint is that the Lord of the Rings trilogy didn't win more awards. The Academy seemed to still hold fantasy films at arms length until they realized if Return of the King didn't win they stood to lose all credibility. Tonight the favorite again is a fantasy film, James Cameron's Avatar. The Rings trilogy made getting backing for these other fantasy films so much easier.
