Starting today friends we have to be extra vigilant checking in on the elderly and more vulnerable of our citizens AND our pets! This heat wave, with Sunday temperatures being the hottest in forever with heat indices into the 110º range could last into NEXT Monday.
So be a good neighbor/citizen and check on those who might really be under the strain of the weather. Remember, you may need this very help when you're older.

Yes, we say this every time it gets ghastly hot
Make sure to check on those without air conditioning these next couple three days and get those in need to a city cooling center or any one of the nine public libarry branches. Also, it is imperative to make sure pets have water and shade or bring them inside if you can.

Here's where to beat the heat around Hudson County
It'll be a blast furnace out there through Friday kids so here is a handy link to pools, cooling centers and where sprinklers will be on round our fair county.
Also, please remember to check up on pets and get them inside if at all possible. Check on the elderly who might be having increased difficulty as the heat index rises to 100º and above.

The nip in the air tells us it's Christmas tree time!
And Johnny's gonna tell you where to get the best Christmas trees at the very best prices around. Gather round kids and uh, don't tell anyone Johnny told you so (Because they'll never find this post, we're practically invisible to the outside world our Technorati numbers say)...
Hoboken and Bayonne have a very nice system of city parks. In these well kept and well manicured parks you'll find pine trees. Some taller, some shorter and some wider than others. As you walk through the city park window shopping, make sure to think of the right size tree for you. Don't be a Clark W. Griswold and get a tree ten sizes too big. Right size it bucko.
Now, we're not saying take a saw and climb halfway up the pine tree and top it (Like we did at the Ypsi City Desk), that would be wrong. But you know accidents do happen and as the commercial character 'Mayhem' teaches us freak wind storms come up, a car could you know, whoops accidentally back into a tree (four feet up), insect damage can also cause trees to topple. Just make sure you don't let these unfortunate acts of Craftsma-- er nature go to waste. Pick up the broken pine tree and take it home. It's super cost effective in these dire economic times and those spiders in the tree weren't gonna make it outside all winter anyway.
Voila, a cost effective well kept Christmas tree for you and yours this holiday season. As Jersey City native Martha Stewart would say "It's a good thing."

Saturday open thread
Johnny isn't going anywhere near the office, public transportation or anywhere else today unless it rains and cools things off. He's sitting high above Jersey City today keeping an eye on things (and making sure the two feral cats in his neighborhood have water) and trying to stay cool.

Pigeons are now bursting into flames in Journal Square
It's pigeon immolation hot. Horrified onlookers are fleeing Journal Square as pigeons both in the air and on the ground get their flame on.
It's a FACT!

At 4 pm Johnny saw a reading on Wunderground at 103º in Jersey City with a heat index of 117º. If it gets to 120º Shih Tzu's start blowing up real good.

Pass the tanning butter
OK, it's hot now, it'll stay hot through Friday. Wednesday and Thursday will be special HELL DAY events with the mercury lapping at 97º. Do make sure your pets are taken care of, make sure elderly family members and elderly friends are looked in on. Call the city and ask about cooling centers. We just checked the City of Jersey City's website and even if you search on the term 'cooling centers' you get no results. That should change. The city runs them, the city should have this information on their website. Johnny's won awards at web design, it's not that hard to make that information available on the site.
Grab a lemonade or other cool refreshing drink, put on the sunglasses in the house or office (this one time) and enjoy!

Heat advisory today from 11 am to 6 pm
It's gonna be another firecracker Jersey City. Temps in the mid 90's with a heat index in the mid-100's. The corn on the cob being sold at the Grove St. farmer's market this afternoon might just start popping right there on the tables.
You just bring the butter.

There is a heat advisory in effect for today Jersey City
The mercury is supposed to hit 102º here today in cool city, and with humidity you can add a few degrees to what it feels like. Please take care and drink lots of water and it would be a very good idea to check on family and neighbors as well as pets who might not have the luxury of air conditioning today.

8's are wild this morning in Jersey City
It's 8 am and the heat index is already 88. Johnny just got back from an early morning walk and he can attest to the 88 heat index.
