Since Johnny doesn't know what time he'll be back in tonight, here it is, our New Year's Eve tradition

We always ring in the new year with this brilliant awesome version of the Rolling Stones performing 'Gimme Shelter', this year being no exception. We get more views on this clip than any other throughout the year believe it or not. Last year we had views from Holland and Germany on this one.

Happy New Year!

As the clock ticks ever closer to midnight, Let's ROCK with the Flametrick Subs

Normally we save the Flametrick Subs for Halloween being a psychobilly band, but this video for 'What Makes a Good Girl go Bad' is too cool for school.

Turn it up and hop around your house

As we roll closer to New Year's Eve how about Pat Benatar with a phenomenal cover song

'Don't Roll Those Blooshot Eyes at Me' was an old standard by a little known performer named Wynonie Harris but with this version Ms. Benatar makes it her very own. Get ready to dance around your living rooms....

New Year's Eve on the Jersey City Desk means we rock in the new year!

Kinda like Dick Clark but only with more music, less commercials and no Mariah Carey.

Let's kick off our big day with Aerosmith with RUN DMC with the classic overdub of 'Walk This Way'

Do tell us of those New Year's Eve plans

Where will YOU Be ringing in 2010? Tell us...

Here's a story that'll send the creeps up and down your spine, a Bayonne girl dies after a spider bite

Now of course we're awaiting the toxicology reports but a Bayonne girl, Marissa Marie Ciolek, was bitten by a spider on Christmas Day and her condition went steadily downhill after that.

According to the Jersey Journal:

"Bayonne Health Officer Richard Censullo said two types of spiders are found in the area, the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. Both spiders can give a "nasty bites," but bites that are not usually fatal unless the victim has an allergy, such as anaphylaxis, he said."

Yikes, sleep well.

So, where ya headed tomorrow night? Dinner? Are you going to see the ball drop?

Johnny's got some out of towners in from Michigan and so that means a nice dinner (a fun one for sure at DBGB's) and then Johnny's gonna head up towards Times Square to get a few snapshots of the party crowd. It's doubtful he's gonna stand in one place with no food or bathrooms for 4-5 hours. SO not happening.

So what are YOUR plans?

The problem with being dead in West New York is that you might not really be dead

So, either West New York has a huge issue with zombies walking the streets which of course would be bad for tourism and nights out on the town, OR they are guilty of some pretty sloppy bookkeeping. Earlier this month a petition was invalidated by Town Clerk Carmela Riccie for lacking enough signatures to qualify it for the ballot and she even went as far as to say that a dead man, Mr. Pedro Costales had signed it. She claimed Mr. Costales had died December 10, 2007. You can imagine her surprise when one very alive Pedro Costales came walking into her office wondering why she had declared his signature invalid because he was dead.

The ball is in your court now Carmela Riccie, we cant wait to hear the type of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo you plan to hide behind.

So, tomorrow is gonna be windy and nasty and cold. A great day for sitting around and watching old movies. Popping some corn in the microwave and spending some quality family time on the old couch. There are probably a couple bowl games on to boot. So spend a day inside, have some fun and make sure to catch up on your Jersey City Desk stories.

Oh, and rest up for Thursday night in Times Square.

Union City gets a nice grant to put in energy efficient outside lighting

Over 500K in grants are helping Union City replace the old street lights with newer more efficient lights that in the long run will help save the city a lot of do-re-mi.

According to Ralph Tango, an engineering consultant for Union City, apart from a different type of glow from the lights residents will notice no difference in brightness but overtime WILL notice a a lowering of the city's utility bills.

Sounds good to us, in order to get more energy efficient lights here to save money all the company selling then needs to do is walk by city hall with open brief cases of money and watch the pigeons come running out to get 'fed'.

Johnny's not much for product endorsements BUT

There is one he has been raving about to friends and family since he got it in early October. Johnny called Comcast to add the Big Ten Network so he could keep up with his Big Ten football and get his fix of his Michigan State Spartans. Along with the Big Ten Network Comcast added the NFL Red Zone channel wherein you get ALL the best of the NFL games all day long. In essence it's like the first week of the NCAA basketball tournament where they keep switching back and forth to the most exciting games and all the fantastic finishes. With the NFL Red Zone you get the best plays, the best moments no matter which teams and every 'red zone situation' (whenever a team is inside the opponents 20 yard line that is considered being in the 'red zone'). It has totally rekindled Johnny's love of the NFL. If, like today you only get one game at 1 pm and it was the New Jersey Giants getting embarrassed by Carolina what's a football fan to do? If you have the NFL Red Zone channel you can watch the best of the rest of the NFL games.

The NFL Red Zone channel, make SURE you get it before next year's season kicks off, it's THAT good.

52º today on December 27th? Better get outside while the getting is good

You better believe it citizens, Johnny and the crew will be heading out for a walk about town on a day like this. 52º isn't supposed to happen again until March or so. Giants fans have got to be giddy having a pre-game tailgate in 50 degree temps over at the Meadowlands.

Thanks to those who pointed out January 27th is a month away. Without the loyal readers here this place would be a bigger mess than it already is. Thanks--Johnny

Johnny wants to give a shout out to all his Detroit homies for kicking the crap out of Mr. Would-be-Terrorist

Well done passengers on the Northwest (soon to be Delta) airliner in Detroit yesterday, who once they saw the assclown trying to start some kind of fire, jumped on the guy (and some were burned in the process) and beat on the brat and subdued him until the FBI could get on the plane.

Well done but kids, next time, save the taxpayers a holding cell and the cost of a trial.

We'd like to take time out and wish all our Jersey City Desk readers a very Merry Christmas

Even the corrupt members of our upstanding city council. Even they deserve well wishes one day a year.

Merry Christmas to all.

Late night open thread

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Johnny will be signing copies of his new book "Oreos, Doritos; My Time as a Guard for the Wicked Witch of the West" at Republic off of Union Square in the Big Appletini tonight. Due to time constraints he cannot make balloon animals or do cartoon character imitations anymore. Lori Serrano, who lost her city council bid in May pleads not guilty to graft charges

In a case and then result we're all too familiar with here in Jersey City, council seat wannabe Lori Serrano, although on tape with Solomon Dwek telling him favors could be arranged for $10K, pled not guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion. Her attorney Raymond L. Hamlin says she's innocent despite what's on the tapes.

We remind everyone that of the 44 arrested in July in the sweeping corruption arrests, not one of the arrestees has been found not guilty or let off. They have all copped deals or await trials. Serrano is simply another in the long line of those who were willing to sell their support for a real estate plan rather cheaply if the FBI tapes are to be believed. It didn't seem to phase Serrano, you know, the possibility of jail time as she was seen laughing and joking around before her arraignment.

Stay classy, Lori.

Joe Strummer with 'White Man In Hammersmith Palais'

Today we dedicate the day to the memory of Joe Strummer

December 22, 2002 the world, and by association Johnny, lost Joe. A sudden heart attack claimed Johnny's musical idol and inspiration for so long. He stood for what was right about music and more importantly the music business. He demanded lower album prices for fans. He demanded the warm-up acts on his tours be treated equally with The Clash and when he found out the promoters weren't shared what his band had. Johnny read an article that one night in a bar meeting with magazine reporters he wondered outloud why a player piano/cd playing piano was allowed to exist instead of a musician who was being paid proper money for a live performance.

In his memory we dedicate the Jersey City Desk today.

Look up tonight Jersey City, that's Jupiter directly under the moon

They'll race to set first in the western sky. A solstice treat on the shortest day of the year.

Johnny asks; What is your greatest winter driving accomplishment?

Bad weather all around making for some dicey driving. Johnny wants to know what was your most heroic drive during winter? Feel free to praise yourselves. Johnny rode with an old friend, his girlfriend and Mrs. Action Space Punk long ago, Ann Arbor Michigan to Chicago in a full blown ice storm, normally a four hour trip that took 7. We lost count at 30 cars in ditches and medians. We had to make that trip, we were all helping friends move the next day. THAT was the best Johnny's seen.

Something Johnny did not know, actress Brittany Murphy used to live in Edison

Putting a local spin on the tragic death of Murphy, the raspy voiced and very talented actress worked in local theater and was always ready to come back and make appearances.

Truly sad.

Nobody is a bigger proponent of women in rock music than Johnny. Nobody. He was hooked by Ronnie Spector's warble, Pat Benatar's octave range, Ann Wilson's power, Chrissie Hynde's defiance and strength and Madonna's dance music. He's had three favorites in his time on this pale blue dot. Debbie Harry, Sheryl Crow and Neko Case. Tonight he looked on with great eagerness as Sheryl Crow and Neko Case shared the stage on Elvis Costello's series on Sundance, Spectacle. Something he never imagined possible until this magnificent series but something that truly truly touched him. We'll be playing clips from this episode taped at the Apollo Theater across the river in September. Tonight before bed it's Sheryl Crow with Neko Case on backing vocal and Elvis Costello on geetar with the classic 'Leaving Las Vegas'.

Union City resident Luis Cortes was having some difficulty parking his vehicle Thursday. Maybe he should have tried this parking wizardry away from next to the Union City Police Department. Police were notified by an off duty officer of Cortes' park job and they approached him and asked if he'd been drinking. He let on he may have had "5 beers".

In honor of our approaching storm...

It's a WHOPPER and we don't mean Burger King

The Winter Storm has been UPGRADED now to 6-12" inches with higher amounts in mid and southern New Jersey and a BLIZZARD Warning for Long Island. The Island could be looking at up to 18 inches of snow and 45 mph winds. The weather centers just said this could even grow BIGGER yet depending on temps out ahead of the storm which are not warming up as much as anticipated.

Hooooooey Man

The snow starts locally between 12-3 pm tomorrow and will go on all night.

Oh hell, let's just have some fun today...

As we await the snowstorm, it's Friday, many people start a long vacation today and Johnny's all alone here in the Jersey City Desk offices (Zoltron's zipping around in the Jersey City Desk Action Weather Dirigible so look out for that and don't shoot at it).

Now, on with some musical FUN, who here remembers Donnie Iris? 'Love is Like a Rock' is the call this morning.

It's our first winter weather warning of the season kids, we may get a white Christmas out of it

It sounds to Johnny via the local weather bureaus and Zoltron here in our own Jersey City Desk Action-Weather team we're in for at least 2-4" of powder beginning tomorrow afternoon with more, much more predicted overnight Saturday into Sunday. What's 'much more'? That's for us to know and you to find out.

From the good people at Wunderground:
Saturday
Cloudy. Snow likely...mainly in the afternoon. Snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Brisk with highs in the lower 30s. Northeast winds 15 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.

Saturday Night
Snow likely. Additional heavy snow accumulation possible. Windy with lows in the mid 20s. North winds 20 to 25 mph. Chance of snow 70 percent.

June 12, 2010, book that date America. We all have something to do together. You don't get to be America by hiding from challenges. You don't get to be America by taking on the less defended beaches at Normandy. You don't get to be America without liberating Europe. You don't get to be America by not inventing rock and roll, the automobile and the cures for diseases that cripple children. You don't get to be America by losing the 1980 Olympic hockey game to the USSR.

We're America for a reason. And on June 12, America has a date with destiny in South Africa. You see that'll be the USA's first World Cup match and lookie see who us Yanks have a date with. Why it's England. The nation that talks football (as they call it) like it's their game. An epic match to be certain. Was it England who recently upset #1 ranked in the world Spain in the Confederations Cup? Oh, no, wait, that was America. Who was the only team not to lose to Italy in the last World Cup? Was that England? Nope, it was America. America seems to be getting this soccer thing together. And England, for all their across the pond talking have won exactly ONE World Cup title. One. It's time the colonies whip mother England's behind once more.

June 12, 2010. England says we have no chance. They tell us the Three Lions Squad is going to overmatch the USA. They say they'll bury us under the pitch.

You don't get to be America without proving yourself on the field of play.

Normally you remember someone illegally channeling 30 large into your re-election account

Not Mariano Vega, nosiree Bob. Even though FBI agents say they have him meeting no less than six times with Solomon Dwek over meals, Vega, the day before he was arrested this summer apparently lied to the FBI saying he'd never seen Dwek before in his life. Despite the fact Vega's buddy Maher Khalil has pled guilty to basically what Vega is charged with (except the lying) and was there at the time, Vega says he has no intention of pleading guilty.

The FBI says they have it on tape, all of it. So far of everyone who has been charged in the big sting--not one has been found not guilty. Many have pled guilty, many have been sentenced so it sure appears the FBI has their ducks in a row, and it sure seems Mariano Vega is intent on dragging Jersey City's name through the dirt on his way to jail.

Just resign, you'll still get your day in court but your usefulness as any kind of city representative has long since passed if it ever existed to begin with. Mr. Vega, you're a disgrace.

Woodrow Miller needs to spend MORE time in front of the TeeVee watching CSI and Forensic Files

Ya see Woodrow, if you're going to clean up a POSSIBLE murder scene (Miller as you may recall was the only other person at the scene of the shooting of Quaneera Adams who sadly died from the gunshot) while the victim lies alive on the bed and THEN call 911 you not only look guilty as hell, you're gonna bring the full force of criminologists down on your dumb ass.

You cleaned up the scene BEFORE calling 911? Gee, nothing strange about that now is there Woodrow? We're also sure the blood on your clothing was a coincidence.

Miller has been arrested in connection with the crime but has not as of yet been charged with murder.

Johnny hears they have teevee in prison where people like Miller can catch up on watching CSI and Forensic Files.

Just a point of order, Rutgers would be slotted in a Big Ten eastern set up and would be in a division football wise with Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State (who has recently supplanted Michigan as top dog in that state) and perhaps Purdue or Indiana. The better half of the conference football wise. Basketball wouldn't matter, Michigan State runs the conference and the people in it. How has Rutgers been doing against UConn lately in hoops? One for the guys this morning--Remember the Pinewood Derby?

A most excellent article on the entire process (either real or imagined) on the Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby fun on the Speed Sport Life website. A quick excerpt:

THE PEOPLE

Racers are comprised of Cub Scouts. These are good ole fashioned honest young kids working hard for an achievement patch. If you want to compete you’ll need to be a kid between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. So, either invent a time machine and go back to race, or do what I did, have lots of sex and get yourself a son. Then you’ll have to sit around impatiently until the kid is old enough to become a Cub Scout. Once he finally hits that magical age, get yourself a drill press, a Dremel, some sand paper and get to work. I mean, get to work, uh, letting your son build the car.

A fun and excellent read. Johnny well remembers his first car (Of course HEAVILY dad influenced) and the trauma of watching a wheel come off 3/4 of the way down the track.

Some of the former Devils who are going to participate include Bruce Driver, Ken Daneyko, Grant Marshall, Chico Resch, Rob Skrlac, Valeri Zelepukin, Jim Dowd, Andy Brickley and Laurie Boschman.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE ROLLING STONES!

It's British invasion night here at the Jersey City Desk and who better to start than with THE standardbearers for bluesy rock and roll? This song was voted the #1
rock and roll song of all time by the VH1 rundown of the greatest songs in music history. No surprise there. Is there a better rock song with more rock and roll spirit and feeling? Notice how Charlie Watts is almost considered awake for this song. Keef woke up in a haze in the middle of the night, had a tape recorder next to the bed as he always did, and laid out most of this song. He then fell back asleep. He said the other 45 minutes on the tape was him snoring.

In perhaps one of the most heinous acts we've ever reported on, the 9 month old son of murder victim Jacqueline Reyes, who was stabbed to death for some money (for some money---simply money and a 9 month old is almost stabbed to death---where the f*ck are our priorities anymore?) in her condominium at 100 Montgomery in Paulus Hook. Police are reviewing building video footage to look for a person of interest or as we used to call them a suspect in the murder. The stabbing took place sometime between 8:00 am and 9:30 am on Tuesday (and Johnny saw all the police vehicles outside as he was out for a walk to pick up a Christmas parcel his mom sent that had to be signed for at the Post Office on Montgomery). Johnny saw nothing of any kind of suspicious thinking back long and hard but SOMEBODY out there knows something. Somebody knows the jagoff who did this. If you have ANY information, or ANY kind of tip simply email us here and we will pass the info to the Jersey City police. This worked once for us in a robbery case when Johnny and crew ran the old Ypsi City Desk. We got tips, the tips were passed along and a predator was taken off the streets. Please, email us here at johnnyactionspacepunk@gmail.com with info or the Hudson County Prosecutors’ Office’s Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

People, to an animal like this it's just a matter of time before he needs more money. If he'll murder a kind loving mother and stab her baby son, he'll do the same to you.

Late night open thread

Here's a late night thread with nothin' to do about nothin' but feeding Johnny's ego. Johnny as some of you may know investigates cold cases and does pro bono work to help solve some. For years he studied the BTK serial killer crimes in Wichita Kansas. In BTK's first murder, that of the Otero family he stole a 9 year old boy victim's radio. BTK sid he didn't know why, he just took it. Well Johnny had long said using the age BTK would have been during the Clutter murders in Holcomb Kansas (the basis of Truman Capote's book 'In Cold Blood'), one of those killers stole the young son's radio and the entire Clutter story would have had a huge impact on BTK's psychie and reasoning behind his serial killing ways. Johnny is reading an amazing book on BTK by FBI profiler John Douglas who in interviewing Dennis Rader, BTK, that indeed the Clutter murders DID make a huge impact on him and he was fascinated by every aspect of the killings all those years earlier and hence, he took the boy's radio.

Near as Johnny can tell he was the only one to make this connection.

Like he said, nothing about nothing but if you have a cold case you want some help with, email him, maybe he can help. He's rather detail oriented with a photographic memory.

First Priority Payroll CEO Jerry Carter is in one heck of a pickle

Police claim the CEO of the First Priority Payroll company was cuffed and charged with kidnapping, and intimidating and harassing a 45 year old employee of his. The charges and explanations are rather shocking. One is that he kept said employee locked in an Adams street apartment and working for 24 hours at a time for no pay. He supposedly told her the place was filled with cameras and he'd know if she wasn't doing as she was told. Police also claim Carter made his victim sit in a bathtub for hours at a a time. The police also told the media that Carter would make his victim send hundreds of cell phone pictures to make sure she was doing as she was told or he'd kill her.

For his part, Carter, through his attorney says he's innocent. We'll see about that but until this entire disgraceful mess is sorted out maybe your best business decision might be to steer clear of First Priority Payroll lest the stink rub off on your companies good name.

Woman takes Hoboken police car for a joyride, gets away with it

Dateline Hoboken: An undercover police officer saw three people urinating in public. As the officer was busy writing out the summons to the lawbreakers, a woman walked up and got into the unmarked car and took off for a joyride. A cab driver had to tell the officer that his car had been pinched. The car was stolen from 220 Seventh St. and found outside 1033 Bloomfield St. Since the car was a Crown Vic and thus a Ford, it didn't come with GM's 60 day return policy so we're guessing this wasn't a test drive of a potential purchase.

Police in the Mile Square City, despite being horribly embarrassed, say the case is still under investigation.

Justice fails us all

A small potatoes judge, Maurice Gallipoli, has ruled that Nidia Lopez or Nidia Boehringer as she is also known as can keep her Jersey City council seat despite using her official Florida residence as a New Jersey tax dodge. Remember Jersey City, Nidia has no problems asking YOU to pay higher taxes to lives here and get services here while she claims a Florida residence as her own so she doesn't pay taxes in Jersey City herself.

We're working up a full and complete background on the judge in this case so come next election day THEY can beat cheeks down to Florida to live, maybe next to Nidia Boehringer.

We've covered some nutty stories but this killer milkman case takes the cake

The New York Daily News is reporting the wife of a man accused of fathering a love child out of wedlock hired a killer milkman to kill the child by delivering tainted baby formula at Kings County Hospital. While the aggrieved and murderous-inclined wife is behind bars, the husband is still in hiding as the deadly milkman remains at large.

There entire sordid tale can be read here.

Well hockey fans it was another big win for the Red Wings tonight in Madison Square Garden, 3-1 over the Rangers. It was tied 1-1 late in the 3rd period before Dan Cleary threw one at the net and Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist managed to bungle the puck into his own net for a late 2-1 Wings lead. Kris Draper added an empty net goal with seconds to play sending the New York fans home in crocodile tears. So Detroit takes 3 out of 4 points this weekend which all in all make Johnny very happy.

Johnny tried telling the Rangers fans they were doomed but many in the row behind Johnny were either too drunk or too hopped up on Vicodin to care.

Johnny caught a civic event tonight where Mayor Healy was helping light a Christmas tree by the Grove Street PATH station. He looked so proud and smarmy standing with his cronies getting face time and adulation of hangers on with cameras until Johnny yelled out to da Mayor "Santa is bringing you some coal for your stocking and a jail sentence" which certainly whipped Da Mayors head around from his appointed pre-fab smiles.

'Scandalously filthy streets' in Jersey City? According to one JC blogger the answer is yes

Ray Schroth says on his NJ Voices page claims that's exactly what Jersey City has. We'd tend to agree. There are certain areas of this city where citizens are downright pigs (And Johnny would suggest India Square and Newark Avenues area for one) but Scroth goes on to make a bigger case against a lazy disaffected populace in a fine article you can read here.

Johnny is thinking of sleeping out on the couch tonight to hear the big storm carry on all night. The wind gusts, the pelting rain, and just the sounds of a good storm coming in from the south would be a perfect backdrop with which to sleep. Nothing like a nice cathartic sleep with great ambient noises.

Smoking gun--Deputy mayor says Healy KNEW illegal funds were headed into his coffers

Indicted Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini said in a superseding indictment that Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy without any doubt KNEW that illegal money was being funneled into his reelection account.

The actual indictment is worded thusly (and Healy is JC Official 1):

It was part of the conspiracy that defendant BELDINI and others received illicit political contributions from the CW in order to fund the Re-election Campaign Committee and the JCDC and to otherwise support the re-election of JC Official 1.

So, our mayor KNEW of these illegal payouts. He KNEW the money was being funneled into his account. So, when is he going to be arrested? When is he heading out to Newark to give up the fingerprints and to do the perp walk?

Mayor Healy, the editorial board here at the Jersey City Desk has been calling for your resignation for quite some time, now we DEMAND it. You WILL be leaving office here. You will do us all the favor of hauling your crooked ass either off to jail or the old disgraced mayors home or wherever it is you wanna go live in shame. You are DONE here.

Johnny would like to dedicate this song to Eastern Michigan head football coach Ron English who just managed to lead the team through their first ever 0-12 season in school history. Rutgers with a big big road win today. Granted, it was a game they should have won but they DID. Zaire Kitchen's hot was CLEAN. From college to pros the officials and league administrators are RUINING the game of football and begging for a softer game by flagging any call they think may have even LOOKED like a 'jacked up' hit. You can't even touch a pro quarterback anymore. Hit a receiver with a big hit? Flag's a coming. Unless you wanna turn people off of football then the powers that be in college and pro ball had better stop with the "Oh that looked like a huge hit that might upset the other team" calls.

Zaire Kitchen, you hit him clean, don't worry if somehow you're being branded dirty by the Louisville team. Johnny knows better. You were playing the game they way it was meant to be played. You hit him with your shoulder. It's very unfortunate Doug Beaumont was injured. That sucks. BUT again, this is football and it's a contact sport. TRUE dirty hits should be dealt with in a far more severe fashion, but Mr. Kitchen's hit was everything good with the game.

Rutgers plays Louisville in less than 90 minutes

Rutgers will be looking improve to 8-3 this season with a win shortly in Louisville. The Scarlet Knights would level their conference record at 3-3 with a win. The tilt kicks off at 11am

We'll be short and sweet on this one, Louisville is 1-5 in the Big East and 4-7 overall. Rutgers had BETTER beat this team or there is a huge risk o f a bowl let down. Big difference between finishing the season 9-3 and 7-5 when it comes to bowl payouts. Louisville is nothing special and Rutgers should beat them by say at least 10 points. Since it's a road conference game and no doubt Louisville is stinging from last year's whipping handed to them by the Rutgers 11, they'll play hard. We'd be happy with just coming home with a win and a date with the couch burners from Morgantown next weekend in Piscataway. Rutgers is an impressive 3-1 on the road but the Cardinals are 4-1 at home winning all their games in Louisville.

Our Prediction
Rutgers 31
Louisville 28

Uh oh, a butthurt congressman from Paterson is running around complaining about Jersey City

Rep. Bill Pascrell D-Paterson is a very jealous and petty man. Butthurt Billy went on record saying how thankful that Paterson was for the state help his city got under outgoing Governor Jon Corzine and then went on a crying jag about Jersey City's amount of state aid.

“Everything in this state goes to Newark and Jersey City. We think we are just as worthy as they are."

Hey Billy, newsflash, no, you're not as worthy. You don't act as any kind of gateway to New York City, you don't have near the jobs base we have here, and when it comes to crooked politicians, Jersey City PWNS podunk Paterson. You don't have the ironworkers and welders who risked their lives digging through the wreckage of the World Trade Centers. Speaking of which, companies devastated by the attacks on 9/11 didn't relocate to Paterson, no, they came to Jersey City--you know--The Sixth. You don't have the fabulous restaurants we do, you waste precious American resources by not having and using mass transit like Jersey City does, there are no teevee shows depicting Paterson like 'Mercy' which shows off the fabulousness that is Jersey City. Face it Bill, if you're comparing Paterson to Jersey City, you lose.

Paterson, where the men are men and the sheep are nervous...

New Jersey Nets owner wins land grab in New York City, wants to move Nets, who will still suck

See, that's the amazing thing about New Jersey Nets owner Bruce Ratner. He won his eminent domain case in the New York State of Appeals Court to grab some land for a new stadium in Brooklyn at the Atlantic Yards. Good for Mr. Ratner. He's already getting ready to move the team into the Prudential Center but that won't make them any better. Why? They owner is a goofball. So his Brooklyn land grab is equally as puzzling, as it does nothing to make the Nets better, all it does is line Mr. Ratner's pockets.

Wait....wait a minute......hold on, I think we just solved this thing by talking it out. It's never been about putting a competitive let alone winning basketball team on the court, Ratner could care less how the other owners see him obviously, it's all about taking valuable land through a court challenge because well he's a big important sports team owner and lining his pockets.

It's never been about basketball....

An Italian American organization located here in the Garden State wants MTV to pull the plug on a new beach house themed show called "Jersey Shore" that advertises the renters as the "hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos". UNICO National said the show relies on crude stereotypes of swearing, bad behavior and violence to depict Italian Americans in a bad light.

Look, we understand taking offense at the 'Guidos' comment (and in the shore towns the correct term we believe is BENNY) but thinking that foul language, fighting and bad behavior are strictly Italian traits tells us UNICO National needs to get out of the shoe box with holes they live in.

Next time just say the dog ate your homework

So you're driving around Jersey City around 2:30 in the morning with a couple friends and you stop to pick up a stranger wearing a ski mask, like you do, and you actually use the story later to the police that the masked stranger made you smash into parked cars. You pick the ski masked stranger up, and wouldn't you know it, he just starts hitting you with the butt end of his handgun for NO REASON. That's odd behavior for a masked gunman wouldn't you say?

Now, when the police arrive you tell them you simply can't remember where you even picked the masked stranger up at. The drivers passengers couldn't remember where they picked him up either, at least they didn't tell police where they picked him up because as soon as the car stopped plowing into parked cars, they were gone daddy gone. The poor assaulted driver fled the scene as well before even calling 911.

The masked gunman never asked for anything, didn't ask to be taken anywhere, didn't rob anyone, and surprisingly police said the driver didn't show any signs of injury, odd for someone who was just beaten so viciously in the head with a handgun he mashed into parked cars.

Police are asking for your help in finding the masked gunman and are telling any citizens with info to call the Jersey City Police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Now, we all know you'll be fixated on the Lions hosting the Browns for the inside track on the #1 overall draft pick (and let's face facts here, when you are a Browns and or a Lions fan draft day is the most exciting day od the year). Two 1-8 teams having at it for abject ineptitude. Johnny's call is the Browns losing most excellently.

In other NFL action the Giants are at home in the Meadowlands at 1 pm (Again, the drinking has already begun) vs. the run happy Falcons. This could be a much tougher game than many Giants fans think. Matt Ryan doesn't simply go out usually and make horrible errors. New Jersey's other team is up in New England awaiting the wrath of the Patriots who are no doubt looking to exact revenge on Rex Ryan's big mouth. That game kicks off at 4:15 pm.

Dallas and Washington are playing at 1 pm in the new big old stadium in Dallas and we here know many fans are cheering for Tony Romo's head to get knocked off and go rolling across the field turf in the new DallASS Stadium.

Elsewhere around America

Michigan State STILL lacks the big play hitters to hang with elite programs like Penn State. Next year's class should close this gap immensely but as for today, Penn State was just too much.

Rutgers played an inexcusable stinker game losing to a very bad Syracuse team, 31-13. If Rutgers winds up going to a lesser bowl than they had hoped this game will be the reason why. Nothing fancy about this game, the Orange just kicked the Scarlet Knight's ass in all aspects. Rutgers falls to 7-3 while The 'Cuse improves to 4-7.

UConn ended Charlie Weis' coaching career almost certainly with a gutsy 33-30 Overtime win in South Bend.

Eastern Michigan and head coach Ron English and the loser who hired English Dr. Derrick Gragg are now fully responsible for the 0-11 record in Ypsianti. One or both MUST be fired. Johnny has been close to the EMU football program since 1983, this is by FAR the worst version of the team. These players have quit on the head coach and Gragg's biggest hiring in his tenure has been an utter failure. Gragg and English are lucky, very lucky the mess down the street in Ann Arbor is perceived as worse and garnering the newsworthy coverage. EMU was waylayed by Toledo 47-21.

Temple has moved to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in MAC play with a strong 47-13 trouncing of Kent State. See, a few years ago Temple ws 0-11 and look at them now, Eastern Michigan, no excuses, it can be done.

#8 Ranked LSU forgot how a clock runs forward and not backward a real head scratching 25-23 loss at Ole Miss.

A HUGE Spartan victory in Spartan Stadium over Penn State to improve Sparty's bowl fortunes. The Spartans are going somewhere, somewhere warmer with a win.

Lehigh has had less than a spectacular season but some sting would come out of it with another consecutive win over arch-rival Lafayette. Nobody really wants their mascot to be a Leopard for god's sake now do they? Mountain Hawks are where it's at. These are some good looking well educated football fans obviously

And one last thing in Ann Arbor tomorrow. If Michigan loses its no bowl game for them and RichRod Super Genius and another entire winter spring and summer of consternation in Ann Arbor. Quote Mongomery Burns "Excellent!" That being said, there is only one thing to show to get all Buckeye and anti-Michigan fans riled up

From this moment on, Hoboken High School is on double secret probation

Well make that ALL Hoboken schools. Here's the crux of the matter--In nine out of 14 exams, passing rates in the district were at least 15 points lower than the state average.

Quoting liberally from the Jersey Journal article on these shocking numbers:

*At Hoboken High School, passing rates in language arts fell from 81.8 percent in 2008 to 70.1 percent in 2009 and in math from 66.2 percent to 53.2 percent.

*The biggest drop in passing rates was at Connors in third-grade language arts, where rates went from 95.5 percent passing in 2008 to 31.9 percent in 2009.

On a happier note, many parents were thrilled, that the scores were being shared with them at all. Maybe an underlying reason these Hoboken kids are so far off track, a lack of communication with the school district and the mommies and daddies who live in Hoboken because it's "Better there than surrounding areas".

Uh huh

So, Johnny is entertaining some friends in town tonight and decides to take them to Marco and Pepe's for dinner. The food itself was sightly above average but when dessert rolled around, the entire restaurant had a breakdown.

Johnny asks for a dessert like everyone else at the table and got utterly stiffed for it even after a friendly reminder, well that's service just a bit too lackadaisical and just plain rude. Of course the missing dessert found it's way onto the bill.

johnny can in no way shape or form recommend Marco and Pepe's Resturant for dinner or busy times in that establishment until they begin to employ a staff that does what they are supposed to be doing, service customers. Epic Fail on the back end of dinner tonight Marco and Pepe's, Johnny's requests wasn't all that hard. Look, if Johnny does have to go eat in in NYC he'll do just that and Jersey City restaurants can starve for the service they seem to have issues with.

Anybody wanna put an over/under on the day that turkey at exit 14B becomes crow chow?

Yes, everyone seems enchanted by the story of so dubbed "Tammy Turkey" seen running in and out of the toll booths on the New Jersey Turnpike there and sitting on employees cars. Officials have tried to catch Tammy but to no avail and now they figure they will simply allow Tammy to continue to live wild and free, until the inevitable happens which is where the Jersey City Desk comes in.

This gobbler gets run down by a car or truck on or before December 1st. Whadda ya got, the over or under?

Time for Jersey City, After Dark

New rule: If you are planning on advertising for something--use bikini women

These two sure drew a crowd today at 5th and 23rd in front of the Flatiron Building next to Madison Square Park. You know, the weather was nice, Johnny had been up to the Beacon Theater last night for the concert with Neko Case, he'd been over to St. Peter's at the Yanitelli Center for some early morning basketball, why not head back into Gotham on a nice day to sit outside at Shake Shack one more time. If you want shots of bikini women on November 17, you need to be a man-about-town. Yes if you click it they get bigger.

St. Peter's dumps Monmouth 58-34

It was a complete rout here at the Yanitelli Center, the Peacocks gave 'em hell and then some. #4 Ryan Bacon, and #15 Wesley Jenkins set the tone early, and we mean early. St. Peter's improves to 1-1 overall with the 24 point win.

Gotta say, this sure was fun. Arriving about 5:35 am and seeing everyone who was all dressed up and had been up partying all night. Now, to catch a cab back to Journal Square for the train ride up to Grove Street. Thanks St. Peter's you've made lovely hosts.

Johnny just saw a score sheet for Monmouth

They are shooting 8-37 so some awesome defense by the Peacocks today.

St. Peter's has this one about put away

As Johnny learns to post on his new phone. The excitement here outside the Yanitelli Center was at a fever pitch with costumes, coffee and darkness on the edge of town but now the Peacocks are proving waaaaay too much for Monmouth. Everyone here seems really into the 6 am idea of things and it IS fun actually. Johnny has overheard from a couple St. Peter's students classes are somewhat optional today.

41-25 St. Peter's leads here in the second half

Any set with 'The Train From Kansas City' and 'Star Witness'. and 'Favorite' along with an otherwise eclectic set made for a gargantuan show by Neko Case tonight at the Beacon Theater. Kelly Hogan seemed some 17% more reserved but with all the endearing crack ups. The story about looking good after the abortion and the other then having to attend dental school, and do well, was scandalous.

'Red Tide' was the best it can be done.

Just deal with it, you know it's coming (and secretly you love it)

What if fate suddenly decided to become your best friend? Neko Case with 'Favorite'. That's Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel guitar and banjo.

This is a once in a generation voice boppers. The other one may be Rick Astley, I see he's really popular on the interwebs too.

Yes Jersey City Desk fans, it's once again Neko Case day here at the JCD

In honor of her performance with her delicious band at the Beacon Theater tonight at 8 pm (74th and Broadway) we thought we'd take some time out of our daily routines to help celebrate Neko's music.

Here she is from last time in town in mid-April on David Letterman with This Tornado Loves You'

Imagine Johnny picking the Jets game wrong. It's a familiar refrain.

Tomorrow is a special day here at the Jersey City Desk, you'll find out why.

Time for Jersey City, After Dark

Let's talk some weekend pigskin....

First off those college scores. Only 2-3 weeks left for teams to secure bowl bids and set up conference championship battles.

Michigan State 40
Purdue 37
Don't know how Sparty, who was dominated on the stat sheet, pulled this one off but it gives them 6 wins and lands them in a lower tier bowl. That bowl could jump a notch with a win over Penn State next Saturday in East Lansing.

Wisconsin 45
Michigan 24
Unless Michigan finds a way to beat #10 Ohio State next weekend, Michigan Athletic Director's super genius hire of Rich Rodriguez will go up in smoke a second straight year. No win for Michigan, it's home for the holidays.

Pitt 27
Notre Dame 22
Pitt withstood a late Irish charge and won the game and raised their record to 9-1. Charlie "Front Butt"® Weis will be looking for a new home next year

Florida 24
South Carolina 14
The Cocks just couldn't get it done.

Alabama 31
Mississippi State 3
The Crimson Tide keep heading for that SEC title game showdown for all the marbles in a couple weeks with Florida

TCU 55
Utah 28
Horned Frog fever is sweeping the nation

Western Michigan 35
Eastern Michigan 14
EMU continues to be THE worst 1-A team in the land. We believe they are the first team to 10 losses, nice job Ron English, in over your head.

Louisiana-Monroe 21
Western Kentucky 18
Well WKU we see is still 0-10 just like Eastern but WKU is playing UP a division for the first time this year

Lehigh 35
Fordham 28
Well all that's left for Lehigh is to beat down hated Lafayette next weekend and finish tied with them in the Patriot League standings

Holy Cross 28
Lafayette 26
Ha ha Leopards, no title for you

Chattanooga 31
Citadel 28
The Citadel blew this one, they were up 21-3 at the half.

Pennsylvania 17
Harvard 7
In the battle for Ivy League supremacy it's Penn!

Today's Jersey City Desk Game of the Week
The battle of the 'Fords:
Samford 27
Wofford 24

Now let's hit the pro-game:

The Giants have a timely bye-week this week which comes at a good time so Tom Coughlin can yell at the defense for and extra week. They have been sieves of late, ALL of them. The Jets it would appear who are over at the Meadowlands this afternoon (fans are already arriving and getting their drink on) would appear to have the NFL equivalent of a bye-week as Jacksonville rolls into New Jersey. They pretty much eat suck and blow so again, expect at least a 14 point Jets win. Yes, we said this same thing about the Buffalo game.

Other games of interest find Cincinnati at Ketchup Field to play the Stoolers, of course there is that Indianapolis vs New England game this evening so many guys with man-crushes on Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will be talking about all day. Dallas at Green Bay has some intrigue to it as well. But as we all know, THE biggest game of the weekend is the Monday Night Football game between evil Baltimore (Boo hiss, why isn't Ray Lewis in jail?) and the pure as driven snow (and a cool 1-7) Cleveland Browns team, just hoping to keep losing til draft day. The Browns travel to Detroit next week for the inside track on the first draft pick, so don't miss that one.
