Late night open thread

No Music Series next week kids, Johnny's back to Michigan for the sad business of the memorial service for his wife and to look at places to live. Johnny should imagine a long drive this time will seem twice as long.

Hopefully we all meet back here two weeks hence. Be good. Don't be a moose puncher.

Time for Jersey City, After Dark

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD!

What a time to be alive, the Jersey City Desk Music Series is running their first (and last) Hippie Music Night brought to you by patchouli, sandalwood incense and Kool cigarettes. Now, first things first. Hippies can be both good and bad and we know from the documentary about them on South Park;

"Hippies, Hippies! They've everywhere, they say they want to save the earth but all the do is smoke pot and smell bad. Hiiiiipppppiiiiieeeeessss."
 -- Eric Cartman

So it's settled, hippies, can't live with them, can't not enjoy some of their music. To that end let's get this VW Microbus push-started with 'For What It's Worth' by Buffalo Springfield and one quick cautionary note, if you're the bass player, hippies have no problem making you put your back to the camera. Also, Neil Young as cowboy hippie.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS!

While not the national anthem of hippie music this is the song they play during the seventh inning stretch of hippie baseball. Everybody grabs a Coke, some flowers, and some hash and nobody cares who wins. We'll move this along because we know some of you have to get up for the anti-Nixon rally in the morning. 'California Dreamin' up next on Hippie Music Night

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE TREMELOES!

Whomever thought of the idea to give hippies instruments should be both lauded and swatted in the back of their melon, man. Johnny kids, he has fun with the hippies. Well, not really, he only ever knew one and well, he killed himself (true). But Johnny is a big enough man to appreciate and totally trash not the movement, but the man (and women).

We'll get right to The Tremeloes and the wild shirts and fringe buckskin jackets and MORE COWBELL on 'Here Comes My Baby'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with GORILLAZ!

Would you look at that, it's 4/20 today and it's Music Series night. Hmmmmm, how to combine those two facts. Johnny knows, how about a Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em night? Let's do that shall we?

Now, when Johnny thinks a good 420-style song he thinks of one that would be a real treat for your ears through headphones. How about a nice sonic kickoff to tonight to keep your buzz going and get you into the music. Gorillaz (with former Clash members Paul Simonon and Mick Jones out front) and the highly addictive song, 'Glitter Freeze'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with PINK FLOYD!

You can't have a 420 Music Series without Pink Floyd. Well, you CAN technically but it's no 420 Johnny would want to be a part of. 'Sheep' all up next in your headphones tonight. Don't get up, just push play, it's easy.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FLEETWOOD MAC!

Just a perfect way to finish off the Music Series this week, with a classic 420 jam if there ever was one. Bob Welch on vocals with Fleetwood Mac and 'Hypnotized'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with BON JOVI!

It's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction weekend in Cleveland and Johnny picked three artists/bands to hi-light for this week's Music Series. Johnny had readily admitted to his new New Jersey family that Bon Jovi is fine. Not his top tier band but there is nothing wrong with them. Their fans love them and they make a good noise and goddammit they're from New Jersey and now they're all up in the Hall of Fame. Johnny is gonna run with 'Livin' on a Prayer' to lead off tonight as it's the era all the fans love, the big hair, the sparks falling out of the ceiling, and band head bobs.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with DIRE STRAITS!

Johnny is sending this one out to all the Rollergirls out there. Don't you ever stop. Never change.

Johnny knew one. Married her. They are awesome. 'Skateaway' on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction night.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SISTER ROSETTA THARPE!

There is simply nobody like her. It's Chuck Berry and Little Richard in one brassy talent. Welcome to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame Sister Rosetta Tharpe, here with 'That's All'

Johnny loves him some classic internets.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with TALKING HEADS!

OK, what song always sounds great on a Friday night on a portable radio, at the mall, on the MTV, at a restaurant, in the car or in your earbuds? 'Burning Down the House' is the correct answer. If you had that you win a fistful of worthless green stamps. Congratulations, player!

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE RAMONES!

She never got there they say...What once was a silly song title is frighteningly REAL America. Get those foil hats out. Listen, if you go to a protest for peace and love and no Russian control of our government no doubt there will be an alt-right or neo-Nazi crowd there to protest you being being cool because, well, they were told to go by the internet. If fighting breaks out, or a mob scene ensues or cops shoot the tear gas a KKK member could really take your baby away if you lose sight of each other. You think about that when you vote in November.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS!

The Cole Porter standard from the play The New Yorkers, which debuted on Broadway in December 1930. Johnny's mom wasn't even one year old. Fine Young Cannibals getting you ready for the half inch of SNOW tonight with 'Love for Sale'

Late night open thread

Johnny had the pleasure of getting to watch a five year old enjoy the hell out of Frozen on Broadway today. Got to watch two kids experience Times Square for the first time as well.

Life's good stuff.

Happy Easter Fools Day!

We'll cover two 'holidays' with one headline. The whole staff is hoping your Easter is the best one you can have and that you get to drop an April Fools joke or two.
