A Jersey City Desk tradition on a night all about them; Ladies and gentlemen, The Rolling Stones!

While the evil fuckers at YouTube have yanked the live video we still have the audio, the best version of the best song ever. Johnny says that ever year and thus far nobody has ever come out with a song to change his mind. You're up 2018.

See you on the other side after everyone enjoys the big moment.

NYE with M.I.A.

'Paper Planes' or real planes, Johnny's not flying on either. Great Clash sample here, makes the song.

Do ya want Johnny's love, woman?

'Do Ya'?

See Mr. Jeff Lynne, Johnny told you she'd report him to HR for asking that. Maybe Johnny can be a roadie for your new ELO tour in 2018.

Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo taking us even further toward 2018

Oh what now? You've seen Valley Girl, right? Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo. No? Turn the sound up, hit play.  Listen to 'Girls Like Me.' There you go.

You didn't think we'd have a New Years Eve party without some Motown did you?

Silly Goose.

The Supremes and 'You Keep Me Hangin' On'

For Johnny, the idea of a New Year coming gets real about the time Europe turns

As the time changes fall across Europe and certainly by the time the new year hits London, Johnny really starts to feel the coming excitement.

We're there...M with a classic to get you there too.

New York, London, Paris, Munich
Everybody talk about 'Pop Muzik'

There's gonna be a lot of this going on tonight

"Let's Pretend We're Married" after all those drinks will be the rule of the evening around 2am. Fantastic song by someone we lost in 2016.

A nice melodic singalong as everyone gets ready to head out that's going out

The Pretenders and 'Back on the Chain Gang'. Chrissie Hynde, the only rock star who ever hit on Johnny...

Music from the 70's it's better than today

Johnny know he sounds like somebody's dad but he's not wrong.

He'll happily die on that hill as well. Genesis with 'Turn It On Again'

Warming New Jersey hearts on a frigid New Year's Eve

'She's the One' sounding good on a Sunday afternoon.

No New Year's Eve party is complete without Earth Wind & Fire

So get your boogie on friends.

Giants football Gameday

Washington is in the Meadowlands in a meaningless game that if you go to in this weather you deserve the frostbite you'll surely get. Do you want to watch Kirk Cousins beat the G-Men? Of course not, stay home and worry about...

DraftWatch®
The Browns have clinched the #1 overall pick. With a loss the Giants have the #2 pick locked up. Then they wait for the Browns to make the mistake of picking Rosen or Darnold or Lamar Jackson first, then they take Saquon Barkley. At this point with questions about each QB the Browns would be wise to take Barkley #1 and if the Giants want to pick one of those three the Browns would have two more to choose from. Wait, what about the Colts? Good question. One of the more intriguing games today is in Indy where Houston, directly behind the Colts in the draft order goes to finish the season. If the Colts win today the Browns will draft #1 and #3. If not it'll be 1 and 4. The Colts are not going to take a QB with Andrew Luck so again, the Browns would have two of the three to choose from.

1) Cleveland Browns -- In Pittsburgh for their yearly hiding
2) New Jersey Giants -- Hosting Washington with subzero wind chills
3) Indianapolis Colts -- At home to Houston. GO COLTS!
4) Houston Texans -- Just lose in Indy, find a way
5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Where are your Buccaneers? Under my Buc'n hat

Johnny spent winters in Marquette Michigan on Lake Superior. Yes, that piercing cold air is on point and the wind is strong enough to make it feel like one of the coldest places on earth. Like Johnny said on Twitter, he's saying this with all the love he can muster, if you're going to simply stand in one spot all afternoon and all night, not moving nor getting out of your pen yo use a proper restroom and your only warmth is your Stadium Pal, you're a moron.

You do not want to miss New Year's Eve at the Jersey City Desk

An all day music blowout full of fun and frolic. We'll set the mood and keep your toes tapping.

Noon tomorrow, 12 hours from 2018, Saint Peter's at the Yanitelli

That's right Jersey City, if you're looking for something coo and fun, why not head on over to Saint Peter's and the Yanitelli Center as the Peacocks, the CIT Champions for 2017, will host Monmouth so it'll have a nice New Jersey flavor. The Peacocks are off to a 6-6 start and 0-1 in early conference play. Monmouth is 4-9 overall and also 0-1 in MAAC play.

The parties don't start til much later so make Saint Peter's basketball part of your New Year's Eve.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with DURAN DURAN!

The band named for the villain in the Jane Fonda classic Barbarella. It's a fact! Getting started tonight with 'Girls on Film' and Johnny had to work to find a video version of this that was not R rated.

You're welcome.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with SNIFF 'N' THE TEARS!

There just isn't much wrong with this song on any point. Johnny's a tough critic and each time he hears it he appreciates it more and more. It never made it really big or even maybe big enough to consider the band a one-hit wonder but for Johnny's money this song will always remain a top-shelfer, 'Driver's Seat'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with BLUR!

WOO HOO!

Blur and 'Song 2' and this is normally where we'd say something like 'sending you on your way out the door' but at this temperature how about 'Ending the Music Series this week with Blur and you are free to move over to the couch'

Note to Johnny's family, friends, and hangers-on

New Year's Eve is supposed to be in the low teens with a wind chill at current projections.

Fuck that.

In that weather you are free to come visit and enjoy the holidays but Johnny nor Mrs. Johnny will be joining you in Times Square. Or outside. Or near a window.

That is all, continue your Netflixing.

Finally

In an interview with the Hudson County View, Mayor Steve Fulop made waves by saying in 2018, these disgraceful stand around jobs cops get (and remember, on Fulop's watch JCPD would take cops on active duty and place them around construction sites) might just be going away.

Hallelujah and pass the ammunition.

Johnny has been railing against these nonsense ripoff jobs from the beginning. It's a poor poor use of police assets and with the FBI investigating this program and the bad actors who gamed it, sounds like Johnny is finally going to get his way.

During the same press conference in his office discussing a multitude of policing matters, Fulop revealed that the off-duty security details could soon become a thing of the past in Jersey City.

“On the off-duty stuff, we’re very proactive. The one thing I’ll tell you, just based on conversations we’ve had with the FBI … I would not be surprised if the off-duty jobs go away entirely in 2018,” Fulop said.

About time. Johnny actually used to complain about this program to Fulop's office back when he was a city councilman and got no replies (Fulop was just awful at getting back with Ward E constituents). On it's face this program is a loser and now that the cops have decided they can schedule these types of "jobs" without paying taxes on all that filthy lucre and brought the administration shame it truly looks like it's going away. It was an unnecessary cost to developers who then pass those costs to the renter because that's the money food chain.

As a side note, Johnny has actually, with his own ears, heard a cop explaining the benefits of hiring them to stand around (When you have a dog you can linger and nobody notices). One was nothing gets stolen. Sooooooo your jobsite, in broad daylight, with 10-20-30 workers, a cop will keep some scrap metal scavenger from stealing company property. Right. That happens at night. That's why security companies, flush with amber lamps, employ people.

So, Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea are taking these tasty jobs away right at the same time they took away a lot of cops extras (some really out there FYI) via an arbitration ruling and thus we'd deduce the JCPD somewhere hidden away has a dart board with the mayor's face on it. In this case, however late to the game, Fulop is right, these jobs are more a sham.

Let's pick up the pace as Santa gets closer

Johnny was just watching the Santa Tracker on NORAD because he's a big kid. Let's now go to Johnny's fave-o-rite holiday song, 'Run Rudolph Run' and we'll use the Dave Edmunds version because, well, it's the best.

Giants football Gameday!

Johnny is calling his first timeout today on playing Christmas music to cover those wacky Giants and their chase for a high draft pick. The story heated up overnight with UCLA QB Josh Rosen saying if the Browns would take him at #1 overall he might just stay in school.

The Giants are in Arizona today for a 4:25pm game...

OK, enough about the game, it's time for the wildly popular 'Draft Watch" portion of our show.

Draft Watch®
Cleveland 0-14
NY Giants 2-12
Indianapolis 3-12
Houston 4-10
San Francisco 4-10

The Browns can clinch the #1 overall pick with a loss in Chicago today or a Giants win in the desert. The Bears FYI are percentage points behind SF for the 5th spot in the draft. Know what, it won't ultimately matter but the Browns are winning today. They are.

The Giants, and this is where the real news today comes in, just need one more loss to clinch #2. That news? UCLA QB (sounding like an entitled little piece of shit like John Elway, Eric Lindros and Eli Manning before him) Josh Rosen says he wants to play for the Giants but not the Browns. His royal highness is considering another year of Pac-12 excitement rather than go to Cleveland. Fuck him.

Indianapolis will play a huge role next week vs Houston but already lost on Thursday.

Houston by losing today vs Pittsburgh and next week vs Indy would give the Browns at least the #1 and #3 overall picks. Lose Houston lose!

San Francisco is on a 3 game winning streak but still not off this list.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THE SWEET!

No, no Christmas songs until Christmas Eve. You kids have to be patient. We'll have them all day Sunday but tonight you'll be getting your usual Music Series.

Also, for those scoring at home we've covered this before, yes, their official name was The Sweet, not just Sweet.

Now that the t's are crossed and the i's dotted let's kick things off with a really fun jam, 'Fox on the Run.' Just a reminder for the fellas, nobody ever got run up the company flagpole for calling a gal a "fox" back in the 70's. It was later when guys decided to unzip their pants and share those flagpoles with the group in the 80's and beyond things got dicey.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS

A history lesson AND a cool song? Johnny, this Music Series really is a value.

Why thank you imaginary straw-person saying this. Indeed tonight it IS a great song by They Might Be Giants in 'Istanbul' and indeed you do get a lesson with this one. Keep your ears open and your toes tapping and music can do a lot of things. Listen fast though, its only two minutes thirty-three of teaching.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with JOE STRUMMER!

Fifteen years gone today. Johnny never knows whether to be sad or celebrate Joe Strummer every year on this date. Other than maybe Pete Townshend nobody in music ever meant more to him than Mr. Strummer. Here's a classic performance, one of his last, a mere month and  half beofre his passing but god damn it still sounds hot and fresh plus its one of the best songs ever written.

Johnny can think of nobody less prepared to truly move Jersey City forward from that position than these two. Watterman has already tried to put the knife in Lavarro's back on this job once let's see how this race turns out. They're both bad choices. Johnny would advise all new council members to vote for neither.

Could it be? It is, a Jersey City Desk News Roundup!

Howdy news fans, belly on up to the bar and let your fingers do the walking as you catch-up on news the Jersey City Desk way!

* The Jersey Journal asks if folks are still as enthused for the incoming Phil Murphy administration. Johnny's more excited by the outgoing of the Chris Christie administration.

* Sounds like NJDOT is prepping you for bad news about longer delays on something that was supposed to be done last year. The Pulaski Skyway project, job security for years.

* The Statue of Liberty is dimming her lights this week, raising the chances of a Krampus visit to Jersey City.

* The Islamic Center of Jersey City rightly suspended an imam who said Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque "remains prisoner in the hands of the Jews" and praying for the annihilation of "the plundering oppressors." Johnny's got no time for this nonsense and neither does any thinking person. Maybe suspensions can turn into terminations?

* Here's a nice story. A former Jersey City resident is now mayor of a small town in North Carolina and is trying ti apply lessons he learned here to his new town.

* Here's one for sportsball fans, today is college football recruit signing day. Find out where that guy who ran for 187 yards and 3 TD's and ruined your town's homecoming is going to college.

For what it's worth...

Johnny is on board 100% with those officials in Hoboken who want to put the final kibosh on Santa Con. First off, what is Santa Con? A loutish, stupid, white privilege on display event that taxes people unfortunate enough to come in contact with it, Google the articles, people get harassed just living in their homes in the Mile Square City/ It means normal people can't spend a day before Christmas shopping without being overrun by idiocy. No happy lunch out while shopping, drunken bros inside. Why Hoboken? The condensed nature of the entertainment (read bars) and e-z access to public transportation. Hopefully this condensation can be used to stop it by asking bars (And I know they have but maybe next time lean on the bars a bit harder) to turn people in Santa outfits away like they do at Barcade. Fact, drunk people hate walking long distances to their next drink. Make that next drink harder to get.

Nick Foles, LOL. We're not laughing at the fact Carson Wentz got hurt EVEN THOUGH Johnny is a Browns fan and Wentz made the recently shitcanned former Browns GM Sashi Brown look like an idiot each and every time he led the Eagles to victory. No, Johnny is laughing because so many in Philly think somehow, someway this will still be their magical season. Oh sure, the Eagles will probably still have more than enough to tip the Giants at the New-but-rapidly-aging-Meadowlands today. However, if they think Foles will lead them past The Rams, The Vikings or maybe a slugfest with The Seahawks or one of the NewCaroLanta triplets from the NFC South for two weeks and then win a Super Bowl? Check your lane Iggles fans.

Now, onto the important things...like draft picks.

Draft Watch®
Cleveland 0-13
NY Giants 2-11
Indianapolis 3-11
San Francisco 3-10
Da Bears 4-10
Houston - 4-9

Cleveland - Boy the Brownies made it closer than it needed to be last week vs Green Bay. Browns fans both cursing and thanking DeShone Kizer for that OT INT. Browns are at home today for the last time this year vs. Baltimore who are clinging to wildcard hope. Cleveland would love nothing more than to ruin the Grackles season. Division game, cold weather, Art Modell is in hell, yadda yadda yadda. Bet Baltimore but keep an eye on this one.

Giants - Lose today, and lose one of your next two and you'll do no worse than the #2 pick because believe it or not, the G-Men have a truly sad strength of schedule, worse than Cleveland or...

Indianapolis - Losing Thursday, very smart. Andrew Luck wants a left tackle. So does his family and AFLAC

San Francisco - The 49ers would appear to have their QB of the future in Jimmeh Garoppolo. He has this mess on a two-game winning streak

Da Bears - Good loss to the Lions yesterday moves the Chicago Eleven back into the top 5.

Houston - Know why Johnny put the Texans on the list at #6? That's Cleveland's draft pick Starvin' Marvin. That's a BAD Starvin' Marvin, it's OUR pick, get away from it.

Giants football Gameday!

OK, we're going with the premise nobody cares about the matchups, who might have a slight edge in what and who is hot. It's ALL about that draft pick at this point so let's get to:

DraftWatch 2017®
The Giants simply have to lose to Dallas today. IF the Browns can somehow manage to win two games and the Giants win no more it's the Giants in the #1 overall draft slot. They also can't afford to fall back any further if they hope for that very high pick ala 'QB of the future' after Eli. We'd be remiss if we didn't discuss the 'Gruden Rumor' that popped up this week as well. Monday Night Football analyst and Super Bowl winning coach with Tampa Bay, John Gruden said he'd be interested in the Giants head coaching job, only IF Eli were still the QB. That would also no doubt change the thinking of that top three pick. Gruden loves to run. The Barkley kid might fight that slot. It becomes more and more fun to speculate on the draft at this late date Giants fans, take it from Browns fan Johnny.

The Browns today have a better than average chance to actually win. Follow Johnny on this. The Packers are hot, just trying to get to Aaron Rodgers return next week for a late playoff push. They are expecting to win today in Cleveland. BUT, if you took these teams stats and took away the helmet indicator and you saw 'Defense vs Rush' or 'Rushing yards' and the like....you'd pick the Browns to win. Yes, the Browns look better on paper at 0-12 than 6-6 Green Bay. FYI the Browns are 6th against the rush in the NFL this year. Didn't have that did you? Also, the Browns fired their GM and hired someone new this week. Jobs are on the line. Veterans will show up to play today. That's why today could, stress could be that day the Browns rise up and win a game. With the Bears in two weeks they have another chance Giants fans, keep your eye on this game.

DraftWatch Standings:
Cleveland Browns 0-12
New Jersey Giants 2-10
San Francisco 49ers 2-10
Denver Donkeys 3-9
Indianapolis Colts 3-9
The Chicago Bears are also sniffing around the pile at 3-9. If you're a Browns fan, after the Bears come the Houston Texans at 4-8 and the Browns have their #1 pick for that classic Browns-like trade for Brock Assweiler.

Fulop's petulant attempt to protect downtown taxpayers from the state ordered reval has a final total, $3.8 million pulled from taxpayer pockets and guess what, his new city spokeswoman hit the ground telling fables like the old one did.

Now first off, spokeswoman Hannah Peterson who just because she's new still can't be absolved for getting basic facts wrong in her statement trying to still spin Fulop's attempt to protect his base. Let's go through her statement and show her how we do in Jersey City:

"For the last four years we have kept taxes stable (not really, we've just played games with the numbers while developers get everything they want from Fulop), while expanding the police department (Who you cut off at the knees by not negotiating their contract fairly and let's face it, the JCPD despise Steve Fulop and on his watch the police force is a disgrace anymore), building new parks (ORLY? Now we know you're a noob) and stabilizing the city's finances (No, again, your new boss has done nothing but play budgetary games with a willing council to kick the problems down the road)," city spokeswoman Hannah Peterson said. "The route it was on in 2013 was extremely dangerous for the city and its residents (Just saying it was somehow dangerous, DANGEROUS LOL, doesn't make your word salad so Ms. Peterson), and we now feel that this process is being done properly. We made the right decision. (You cost city taxpayers 3.8 million dollars for Fulop's tantrum)"

There you go Ms. Peterson, fixed all that for you and please don't insult our intelligence with such nonsense in the future.

Merry Christmas; PATH looks to add new cars, repair others and make more improvements

PATH now has $300 million in their stocking and are looking to possibly buy new train cars, rehab other ones and run more trains during rush hours. PATH says when this plan is finished, along with a new flood-proof power station in Harrison they hope to be able to run 19% more trains during the busiest times. The devil is in the details which you can find here along with your mistrust the Port Authority can get anything right which you brought with you when you showed up here.

If people didn't vote late or there are few people at the runoff victory parties here's why, Gary Numan at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City tonight. You can't pass that up. We sure can't.

Come on, he had one song, do you need us to tell you it was 'Cars'?

Runoff night in Jersey City with a shock in Ward E

Four wards in Jersey City had runoff elections today with three favorites winning in Wards A, B & C.

Denise Ridley is far ahead of Joe Conte in Ward A. Far ahead. She will take over for Frank Gajewski.

The boss shivved Chris Gadsden in Ward B, turning loose (and Gadsden put out the video to prove it) dirty politickers with former council member Phil Kenny and even council President Rolando Lavarro on scene where campaign materials were being 'fiddled' with. Mira Prinz-Arey sidled up to the Fulop machine and handily beat Gadsden today. Ward B loses a fine young talent on council in our opinion.

Ward C sees the return of Rich Boggiano who ran independently of Fulop but still won the runoff vs John Hanussak. Boggiano gonna Boggiano.

Which brings us to Ward E which will, for the next four years be "Unbought and Unbossed" as James Solomon pulls the upset over media and endorsement favorite Rebecca Symes. Symes had all the momentum, all the television ads, all the local endorsements from government groups, local businesses, style bloggers and even outgoing Councilwoman Candice Osborne. In the end the question Johnny asked on the first election night, would the Hudnut and Grillo vote move to Solomon and apparently at least some of it did. Johnny also heard from more than one person the whole ChicPea incident however well intentioned, didn't help. This was not Johnny picking that scab, this was people discussing it around him. There were also claims of a nasty push campaign in Ward E. We'll have time to go over all these races but tonight is, as an old boss of Johnny's used to call it, 'The quick and dirty" analysis.

OK, maybe the JCPD isn't a D+ force...

Maybe they're just a D. As Johnny is fond of saying, Jersey City is a B+ City with a D+ police force and that grade just got dropped over this nonsense. You honestly do wonder who is out driving around in JCPD cars and representing the citizens of Jersey City. Here are the sad facts in the next case of JCPD gone wild.

Giants football gameday -- The Geno Smith era dawns

Yeeeeaaaah. Johnny remembers when Bill Belichick took over the Browns back in the 90's and ran the very popular Bernie Kosar out of town so he does know how Giants fans are feeling shocked and betrayed over Eli Manning. Of course Kosar was traded to Dallas, took over for a half season when Troy Aikman was hurt and won his Super Bowl ring.

Then the Browns moved so the comparison ends there.

What.A.Mess. Head coach Ben McAdoo is rumored to be broomed as early as tomorrow morning but then again didn't we all hear that last week? Let's see but onto the Raiders.

The Giants need to---Oh screw all that. Nobody cares. They want McAdoo to lose (as if the Giants somehow can't) 40-0.

DraftWatch®
Cleveland 0-11 (At the Chargers today, 25% chance to win)
NY Giants 2-10 (That loss to SF pays big dividends)
San Francisco 2-10 (JUST defeated the Bears 15-14)
Denver 3-9 (Getting whipped by the Dolphins now)
Indianapolis 3-9 (Taking the ziggy vs the Jags today)

When it comes to the draft thing, keep Eli on the bench. When it comes to what's right, fire McAdoo and put Eli back in.

The last *sniff* Scoreboard Show of the season.

Oklahoma 41
TCU 17
If you ask Johnny, Oklahoma stands the best chance of unseating Clemson. Speaking of which...

Clemson 38
Miami (FL) 3
That turnover chain kinda sorta turned into the one ring around Frodo's neck by the time he got to Mordor the last couple weeks

Toledo 45
Akron 28
The Rockets take the MAC title and Bancroft Street erupts with Papa Johns and Pabst

Wofford 28
Furman 10
Johnny didn't wear either his Wofford or Furman shirts today so as not to favor one over the other

Grambling 40
Alcorn State 32
Grambling scored a cool 2 points in the 4th quarter and they didn't even need them

Georgia 28
Auburn 7
Georgia more than likely played their way into the playoffs on the back of super freshman Herschel Walker

USC 31
Stanford 28
Trojans topple Trees in Hippie Bowl 2017

Ohio State 27
Wisconsin 21
Was this win enough to cover for two blowout losses and hop a 2-loss Buckeye team over 1 loss Alabama? The committee tomorrow is going to never hear the end of it either way

South Dakota State 37
Northern Iowa 22
One of the really underrated college logos, SDSU

UCF completes their undefeated season and can now be completely overlooked because they're not Alabama or Ohio State. UCF wideouts Tre'Quan Smith and Dredrick Snelson were devastating today and are the ones who will be allowed to loot and pillage whatever bowl game city UCF goes to

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with PINK FLOYD!

Hey there, come on down to Crazy Phil Murphy's New Jointsy! Have a puff along the boardwalk in Atlantic City, smoke a bowl in the Pine Barrens, pack that bong tight on Owen Grundy Park in Jersey City, New Jersey is gonna say yes to the recreational weed. In one short month Chris Christie will take his Burgermeister ways with him and a new way of thinking and of making so much money you have to move it to go to the toilet will go into effect.

Those poor people across the river who have built a cottage industry of looking down their noses at Garden State residents will come across the river like little Oliver Twist asking  for some more, please. Sorry Pennsylvania, only Blue States get the smoke, you go back to your meth labs. They will come by the tens of thousands to NJ and we'll all take one big treasure bath at the end of next year.

But first, a Smoke 'Em if Ya Got 'Em theme tonight to get everyone excited about all the weed you can soon smoke legally. We'll try not to be too cliche musically on this tonight but we're darned tootin' gonna start it off with Roger Waters and David Gilmour's gift to smokers, 'Comfortably Numb'

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with FLEETWOOD MAC!

You probably guessed it right about as you read Fleetwood Mac, the Bob Welch classic vocals on 'Hypnotized' was on the way. Well, it is. Right now.

Friday night MULTIMEDIA EXTRAVAGANZA with ANGELO BADALAMENTI & DAVID LYNCH!

When the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me film came out, it had an incredible David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack. There was however one song that just put the zap on Johnny's head, one called 'The Pink Room' and just now Johnny found it on YouTube in longform. He can think of nothing better to end a Smoke 'Em If Ya Got 'Em night than with some Twin Peaks magic.

Johnny had a good chuckle at a local political ad

Rebecca Symes is out with her closing argument ads on the local cable and when Johnny was watching one he got a good laugh. Her ad said Symes is running against the Trump agenda.

You and everyone else and we're gonna call you if we need that or it becomes your job. Nice straw man argument.

What would this town do without someone who noticed this horseshit?
