It's a Heat Advisory kind of Labor Day

The Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team is merely parroting the National Weather Service (but now the JCDAWT gets a tax write off again this year) in telling you Jersey City and the surround are under a Heat Advisory through Tuesday evening at 9pm. Heat index values will rise to close to or over 100º. You can read the whole NWS advisory here.

That's some snowstorm out there

Some pretty good white out conditions for a 6-10" storm. Oh that wind.

Annnnnnd this morning 'Big Weather' has come around to Weather Willy's 3-6" forecast

So, get ready, tomorrow morning the Bomb Cyclone will spin close enough to give us 3-6" starting early morning and running through the afternoon.

Then two days of Hoth.

Storm's coming...

Here we go, winter got a late start but seems to be ramping up with these horridly cold temperatures. Pretty much the first storm with precipitation to drift by was going to be a snowstorm and the one drifting up the east coast is historic. Incredibly low pressure, in fact words like 'Bomb cyclone' are being thrown around in weather circles. Now, that doesn't mean that's all going to hit us, for the most part it'll be a giant intense storm in the Atlantic Ocean, until it get to Maine and the Maritimes then look out.

While many local TV weathercasters are selling 1-3 right now Johnny listens to Weather Willy who has a far better record on these storms than the talking heads. He was the first and just about only to tell us that giant 26" snowstorm of a few years ago was on the way. Follow that link to his latest forecast which starts at 3-6" right now. The cold air coming in behind this storm will be, to be kind, dangerous. Wind chills in the -20º range Friday and Saturday before it starts to normalize on Sunday.

A white Christmas after all?

We're not sure what the official call is on how much snow constitutes a white Christmas technically but some of the weather enthusiasts are now calling for a dusting to 1" of snow late Christmas Eve into Christmas morning. Oh, it'll change to rain by afternoon but there might just be a some snow for present opening ambience.

The Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team (and Accuweather) have a better fix on the storm

#WinterStormBowlingGreenMassacre will get to the Jersey City Desk viewing area early early Thursday morning. After a 60+ degree Wednesday, around midnight that starts to change and how. The storm will start as rain but the cold air will arrive now in time to give us a 3-6" of snow by the time it stops late afternoon Thursday. Hold onto your mittens kittens because after the snow leaves so do the clouds and it's going to drop into the upper TEENS. 60º to the teens in just under a day.

The Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team says Thursday might get nutty

A front that will pass through our area on it's way to New England will start as rain before possibly dropping some plowable snow (some models show it having enough gas for 8" of snow, starting as the wet kind) on our area. Stay tuned to this channel for more information on what we're calling:

Today is no pants day all over the MTA subway system

it's 25° out there right now with a wind chill of 6º. Later today we'll get some sun but that wind is going to pick up even more and blow yesterday's snow around sooooo not an optimal day for walking around with no pants.

Johnny's just gonna go ahead and post our number on this morning's snow total

NJ.com only had two places reporting on snow totals, Harrison at 2.5 inches and Hoboken at 2.8. Johnny's gonna go ahead and take the Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team's word and say Jersey City had an even 3.0 and we won.

BOOM! Winter Storm Ethel Merman is blowing up!

The imminent winter storm, ne, Blizzard that'll get here much earlier than planned as this storm speeds up and intensifies (Johnny told Mrs. Johnny this morning he had a hunch it'd grow) and now will give Jersey City and the surround 12-18" of snow in Blizzard conditions. 

Stay inside after mmmmm, 3am and just look, no touch. This one's gonna be a big one.

Winter Storm #EthelMerman set to hit this Saturday!

Screw the Weather Channel naming storms. Johnny's taking his turn in naming this one. #WinterStormEthelMerman could bring anywhere from 4-8" of snow up to 8-12" of snow or anywhere in between as a front carrying a lot of moisture rolls up from the Carolinas Friday and all-day Saturday. What a gorgeous Saturday, our just reward after so many hot weekends. Get out there and enjoy! Everywhere downtown seems to be hopping this afternoon and may well spill into tonight.

It is going to be a scorcher today

Temps in the mid-90's and heat indexes in the middle 100's:

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings starting at noon for Mercer, Gloucester, Camden and northwestern Burlington counties. The maximum heat index forecast for those areas is between 102 and 107 degrees.

As always when the temperature gets this high. limit outside exposure, drink lots of water, check on the elderly and PETS and make sure they are holding up OK. Bring a water bottle with you if you're walking a dog this afternoon. when you see them start to foam a little at the mouth it's time for water. If you're heading to the JC Eats outside Jersey City Hall today stay hydrated. Alcohol is NOT a good idea as the beverage of choice on hot days like this.

We're looking down the barrel of some pretty big storms later this afternoon

Big ones with the biggest threat being some really fast winds and lightning. The biggest part of the storm should roll in half past two but keep your eye to the sky anytime after lunch.

The snow is not going to let up anytime soon

If you were hoping for the day to improve so you could run out and get some things done, good luck with that. The snow arrived late but forecasters say it's still going to bring us 4-8" with it now looking like a heavier amount is more likely. Do be careful should to head out later after the snow stops tonight as the temperatures are going to bottom out and whatever melted over the last couple days is going to freeze up. That's a potential for a LOT of ice around here friends. Since it's dropping into the middle-teens tonight that means the salt on the roads and sidewalks is probably not going to help too much.

Here's an image of the Mill Creek rehab project downtown. Johnny saw the snow sticking to the safety netting (that Mill Creek employs yet many other contractors in Jersey City do NOT) making it look like some kind of eerie spider web. Cool beans.

And you thought winter was over...

The Jersey City Desk Action Weather Team is sorry to remind you about March coming in like a lion and so forth. Pretty dodgy weather coming our way from this morning into tomorrow. We'll start off with snow today and into tonight, 2-4" roughly. Then it gets nutty with rain, freezing rain, sleet and up to 1/10th of an inch of ice.

Needless to say the morning commute tomorrow will suck hard.

In hindsight...

Some people really really did a disservice to workers and school kids by insisting on a half-day of work/school yesterday. Obviously the decisions that go into closing a school early are far different that the "rules" that apply to closing a business/sending workers home but a lot of NJ businesses and schools messed up by A) Not canceling school for a couple days (Kids aren't to the point they'd have to make up excessive days in June) and B) When the businesses didn't just tell people to work from home if possible and then sent them all home around noon after realizing the weather service wasn't lying to their bottom lines, they dropped everyone on the same roads at the same time so everyone had a lovely drive home worse than it should have been.

Schools and businesses need to be weather aware. Be smarter next time.
