And we'll kick it off with the 1961 winner of Best Picture, the New York love story 'West Side Story'.
It seems in 1961 gang members would hold dance offs over turf with the occasion knife. We like this stylized form of turf war better than drive by shootings.

Music: Leonard Bernstein. Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim. Choreography: Jerome Robbins. It was a recipe for AWESOME. Ironically the weakest actors were the two leads but that doesn't take away from the experience. One of my favorite movies of all time.
As to your objection over K VS. K taking the top trophy over Apocalypse, The Deer Hunter did win the previous year and more than likely Oscar voters didn't want to seem stuck in a rut.
I personally thought Slumdog Millionaire was a surprising choice for best pic last year. It was entertaining, sure, but not on the level of Milk or The Reader.
I would hate to see 'Avatar' win the big trophy this year. Spectacular effects with a hack story is not deserving in my book. I'm calling 'The Hurt Locker.' Will also groan if Sandra Bullock wins for best actress; one should not be rewarded for being annoying for two hours. And it's not like she has a tour de force body of work that is being recognized. Jeff Bridges MUST win for best actor - his Bad Blake was the role of the year.
Rut? I pay them to pick the best picture not worry about trends
