It's the Super Bowl of art weekends -- JC Artists Studio Tour
The JC Artists Studio Tour starts tomorrow and it gets bigger and better every year. So many of Jersey City's best artists will put their best work forward for a LOT of art lovers all over the area. There will be a kickoff party tonight at 6pm in J. Owen Grundy Park on the waterfront. For those who wish to see which of your favorite artists are where and even get a preview of some of them here is a handy link to the event's Facebook page. You can also follow them on the Twitter.
Johnny is more of a Photoshop kind of guy when it comes to art ability. He did however leave the art world agog a few years back with his stunning breakthrough piece:

Tomorrow, you have to go do this, for food's sake
Say Billy, do you like food? Really good food prepared the right way? Then friends tomorrow right at Journal Square the Egyptian Festival runs from 12 noon to 10pm. Falafel with that warm bread and off the grill amazing shish-kebabs with that sizzling meat and all kinds of Egyptian foods. It'll be 72º wonderful degrees so do yourself a favor and know you can be just a train stop or to from something like this in Jersey City.

Good on us: Jersey City ranked #8 in the nation as a LGBT-friendly city
Jersey City has been named the #8 LGBT-friendly city in America by Nerdwallet. New York City nor Philadelphia made the list.
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop was quick to praise the poll:
“We are excited to have such a diverse community in Jersey City that is recognized nationally. As we prepare to celebrate LGBT Pride Month, it is a great honor to see Jersey City ranked alongside such large cities as San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago.”
So just what is it that helped Cool City rank so highly? A very low percentage of hate crimes against the LGBT community and a perfect equality score. So good on us Jersey City. A #8 ranking is a good place to start, it might even get us into a LGBT bowl game but we can always do better. Let's see that we do. Hopefully NYC and Philly can learn from Jersey City's example.

Art show opening tonight we wanted to tell you about
Artists Maurizio Zuluaga and Martin Abrahams open their dual show "Deflection" at Gallery 58, 58 Coles St., in Jersey City on Saturday, May 17 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Mea Culpa, Maurizio Zuluaga is a friend of Johnny's, but his artwork is spectacular. It may well not be on display for this show tonight but he has done some work with 3-D art in the past that just blows one away. This is gonna be an excellent show for both artists. As it says on the website:
"DEFLECTION" /diˈflekSHən/ is an art exhibit conveying the unique visual and intellectual angles of these two contemporary neo-pop artists in a body of work that is beautiful and color strong, exciting and thought provocateur, sensory innovative and most of all, it's a profound insight into the human's exquisite ability to deflect and bend the waves to adapt and evolve in our times".

The kind of Jersey City Johnny wants to live in
Johnny was all prepared to go off on one of his usual scolds, whether it be the mess in Trenton, the weather-related mistakes being made here in Jersey City, or the Transit deal mess in Hoboken but something happened this morning that pushed all that to the back burner.
Walking to the Grove St. PATH Station with his wife and dire wolf in tow, Johnny saw a young gentleman stopping his morning routine to do something so cliche some people may be non-plussed. He was on his way to the PATH station, possibly to work or to meet someone. He saw an elderly woman pushing a walker with wheels on the still icy and snow piled sidewalks and intersections. This young man stopped and offered assistance to make sure this woman made it safely across the icy mess and get on her way safely. Five minutes out of his day for something so nice, something that shows he cares for people around him. Five minutes to do what he felt was right. Johnny dropped his wife at the PATH and started waking up Marin Blvd. in the direction the woman had set off in. He and his wolf caught up with her at 1st and Marin. Johnny picked up the cause of the first young gentleman and made sure this wonderful woman (her name is Dorothy and like Johnny she was originally from Michigan and she moved to NYC in the 60's and then to Jersey City some 25 years ago. She too had helped rescue dogs back before it was all the rage) made it past the ice and snow that Shop Rite refuses to shovel or plow or salt next to their store on Marin Blvd., and safely got her to BJ's where she was headed.
THIS is the Jersey City Johnny wants to live in. Johnny's not taking credit for something someone else started. He merely wants to pass along this story to ask YOU citizen what can you do daily with say 5 minutes to help make our fair city even better. Let this young man's kind act inspire YOU like it did Johnny.

That's Right! St. Peter's takes down Seton Hall in OT
The Pride of Jersey City®, the St. Peter's Peacocks beat Seton Hall at the Prudential Center yesterday 83-80. The win by the Peacocks breaks a 17 year drought against The Hall.
Desi Washington had an incredible game, going off for 34 points including the winning 3 point basket in overtime. The only thing putting a damper on this wonderful win for St. Peter's (3-6) was Jamel Fields of SPU picking up a knee injury. Marvin Dominique also impressed for St. Peter's with 23 of his 25 points coming in the second half.
St. Peter's is at Hartford next Sunday the 22nd before coming home to the Yanitelli Center for a 2pm tip on Saturday December 28. Let's fill that place!

Jersey City awaits it's newest Superhero
Five years is a long wait for a Superhero to arrive in a city the size of Jersey City but the long wait is over. Comic book writer G. Willow Wilson has placed her newest Marvel superhero right here in Jersey City. The crime fighter is named Ms. Marvel (In real life she's mild-mannered Kamala Khan, 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants whose powers include the ability to change shape) and she's a Muslim. Said Wilson:
“Jersey City was a really appropriate place for a junior superhero who’s figuring out her powers and identity.”
Another reason this comic will rock? They're going to use real streets and real imagery when at all possible:
“Everywhere possible, we’ll be using actual street locations in Jersey City,” Wilson said in an email. “No cop-out generic cities here!”

You want to be part of the new hot foodie scene? Brothers and sisters you're standing in it
Mayor Fulop tweeted out this story from the New York Daily News this morning where they say about Cool City and we quote:
'Jersey City is emerging as the hot new foodie destination in the NYC area'
Damn straight. We don't have much use for the Daily News but they are spot on (if not a few months late) with this story. They concentrate on a new restaurant in a very familiar place. The restaurant will be called Talde, the vision of Dale Talde, best known from Bravo’s “Top Chef” and his well-reviewed eponymous Park Slope eatery, with Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, the stars of HGTV’s “Kitchen Cousins. The site? It's the old JCPD headquarters at 8 Erie (and a sidenote, 8 Erie is being transformed by Jersey City construction magicians Brunelleschi). Gina Pace's fine article also talks up Satis, Marco and Pepe, Barcade, Razza, Taqueria, and Thirty Acres. One thing Gina, you said "Apparently all those years of “sixth borough” jokes have finally rubbed off on Jersey City," in the story. See, we never took/take that Sixth Borough thing as a joke, so the joke's on you. Jersey City, let's also not forget the gems not spoken of in the article, especially India Square where quite a few New Yorkers go to eat on a Saturday night.
So Johnny gets here and almost immediately this city sets about creating the gilded age in Jersey City food. You can't beat that with a stick. So Johnny's culinarilly (it is now) inclined readers, what say you? Have you been to any of the aforementioned restaurants? Care to share a review or two in comments? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

The water in the streets is chest high! There's no power! Everything is flooding!!
Oh wait, that was last year. Nevermind.
We'd like to give Jersey City (just Jersey City this morning people, Johnny needs to talk to just his peeps on this) a HUGE pat on the back for everyone's actions over this past difficult year. A pat on the back to all the residents who had to deal with so much water, so much destruction and so much uncertainty. Police actions because of citizen malfeasance during the storm itself were nominal. There wasn't looting. Very very few took advantage of others (sans a few gas stations). After the storm we helped each other pick one another up. We helped each other rebuild. We helped out our neighbors who needed a hot meal, or to dry off, or maybe needed a place to come over and charge up a phone or watch news coverage as some got power back. Judging from city responses elsewhere in New Jersey, the Jersey City government led by former Mayor Healy did a very good job before, during and after the storm. We'd like to give pats on the back to many city council members who at the time did everything they could to get their residents the help and information they needed. A huge pat on the back as well to all the volunteers and people who helped out and didn't get their names in the paper nor ever expected to. You're all heroes and as we're fond of saying around these parts, Peter Stuyvesant approves!

2013 Jersey City Artists Studio Tour at 150 Bay Street this Saturday and Sunday
150 Bay St., conveniently located just off Marin Blvd. and hey, look at that Bay St., will be hosting some of Jersey City's top artists this Saturday and Sunday (actually they'll be hosting YOU in their Murloc huts). There's gonna be art, there's going to be incredible music (including Detroit's own Eliza Neals) and a good time for everyone. Artists include Paul Jansen, Ashley Pickett, James Fraser, Caroline Thompson Muriel Favaro, Robert Koch, Karen Fuchs, Lynda D’Amico, Chantal Lamour, Robert Kogge, Norman Cahn, Amy Donaldson, Sarah Snodgrass, and Jonathan Wolf. It starts off your Saturday at noon (sleeping in is a good thing) and runs til 6pm. Make sure not to miss Sunday evening's concert in the 150 Bay St. courtyard.

Think you're up to painting a mural on a building? Jersey City wants YOU
Johnny would paint a mural on a building but nobody would want to see that. You can't Photoshop on the side of a building.
However, if you are a good artist Jersey City is going to try and paint murals on buildings all over town, making it kind of a living gallery:
So far, three are complete, including a blue-hued image of a Native American woman on the side of an apartment building at Summit Avenue and Grand Street courtesy of artists Shawn "Pawn" Edwards and Emilio Florentine.
City officials call the effort both a city beautification effort as well as a cultural education campaign. Mayor Steve Fulop said he wants to turn the entire city into an "outdoor art gallery."
So, who should you contact if youd like to see if your work can be displayed? Contact Brooke Hansson at the mayor’s office, bhansson@jcnj.org.

How about you use up one of your free New York Times stories on a brilliant write-up on Jersey City
His excellency Steve Fulop was out with a link to this story on the Twitter this morning promoting a fantastic and forward looking article from The New York Times on Jersey City and where we are headed as a city. Much of the article talks about former NYC residents being quickly won over by the last gritty, art-friendly, and food fabulous enclave with any room to build, renovate, or reclaim.
The article points out that some who have moved from Brooklyn fled rents equal to or above those in Manhattan. When rents in Brooklyn outdo rents in Manhattan it's the surest sign Brooklyn and their MTV Awards aren't living any kind of Bohemian hardscrabble lifestyle anymore. The Sex Pistols and The Clash days are done and now it's Katarina and the Waves time for Brooklyn. Leave them alone with their thoughts for a spell friends, this may take a while to sink in.
Hell yes Jersey City. In the words of John Winger:
Grow? Who could grow more than me?
Talk about massive potential for growth.
I am the little acorn that becomes the oak.
Go faster Mr. Mayor. If Johnny can deal with hellishly loud gargantuan construction projects in his neighborhood the good people in Journal Square and The Heights and everywhere else deserve no less.
Oh and for those who might need a tipping point? Snooki and What'sHerName don't live here anymore. That was the last mayor.

Jersey City's Razza Pizza lands a pie on America's 33 best
The website Thrillist put together a list of the best pizzas in America and just what makes them so darned tasty. Razza Pizza at 275 Grove St. had their Artiginale land on the best list:
This is the best Neapolitan pizza that you better not call Neapolitan pizza. The crispy edged wood-fired pies at downtown Razza's serve up nothing but seasonally harvested New Jersey-everything, from the locally milled flour to the wild yeast that eats it before you devour fresh mozz, house-made sausage, and shaved onions baked in a secret sauce-blend of heirloom tomatoes.
Congrats to Razza Pizza, expect these Artiginale's to be flying out of the kitchen.

The famed Jersey City tradition of 'The Running of the Badgers' kicked off today
Nine days of festivities, tradition and running from wild animals, just like Pamplona Spain. As you know here in Jersey City it's badgers, not bulls the revelers run with. Hey, with a bull the danger is real but lasts only a couple seconds. With a badger, boy howdy if one of those lays into your calf your day is shot. This morning's run through Hamilton Park only saw two runners with minor scratches and one bystander who got a nasty bite. Great fun as always was had by all. Runners and bystanders don't seem to get bit and clawed like they used to before 1994. That's when the Humane Society said the badgers had to be fed before the run. Eight more days of family fun and exercise Jersey City, get out there and have fun. Remember, you don't have to be the fastest person on the course, just faster than the person next to you.

We have a full house of dignitaries here today for Mayor Fulop's (He became mayor at midnight) inauguration. Senator Menendez, Governor Christie, former JC Mayors, political media, and other big hitters in Hudson County so as Jersey City's Official Nere-do-Well® it falls on Johnny to offer the blanket welcome.
We hope you'll find the second-largest city in the Garden State to your liking as we have so many more amenities than the first-largest city. Please take a few minutes to enjoy our waterfront and the local grub. Best restaurants in the state right here so don't forget to eat. A lot of planning has gone into this shindig today so Johnny supposes we need to talk about this:
