For those of you keeping score at home, 60% of jitney busses failed their roadside surprise inspections this past weekend and were taken off the road. 15 of 26 vans were found to be a danger to the passengers riding them with such colorful issues as escape doors welded shut (didn't that one turn up a lot last time too?), faulty steering, bald tires and bad brakes.
Now you may think this doesn't really affect you, that is until one of these unsafe for city streets jitney busses mashes into your car because their brakes were substandard. Also, think of your neighbors who do ride jitney's to get around town, don't they deserve safe rides? Of course they do and we here at the Jersey City Desk applaud Edward DeFazio in the Hudson County Prosecutors office and the JCPD for working closely on this topic. It IS important and it DOES matter. If these companies aren't going to worry about you it's nice to know somebody will. People are forever complaining about the role of government, this is yet another case where it does matter and it does correct a safety problem facing not just drivers but riders as well.
