Johnny cares not if you use fireworks but you gotta use common sense

A fireworks cautionary story from Long Island today where Eric Smith blew off his left arm at the shoulder (no, clean off) while looking down a homemade type of fireworks shooting mechanism. Smith was using a three foot metal tube to shoot fireworks mortar style out of and when one didn't go off he got caught looking down the tube when it finally ignited and took off.

Look, if you wanna blow things up, keep it on your property and at least TRY to be smart about things lest stories like this get used at cudgels on those of us who are for safe and smart fireworks usage. Johnny has been shooting off firecrackers and bottle rockets and M-80's for decades no matter how illegal they were in Michigan. Most decent fireworks are banned in New Jersey and New York (actually almost all the northeast), Johnny sees these nanny laws as insurance industry gifts. YOU have all the responsibility and YOU better be ready to take YOUR actions seriously especially after an accident. Don't blame the fireworks maker, don't blame the home of the place you were being irresponsible in fact don't blame anyone, it was YOU who lit the fuse. Johnny would love to see fireworks legal and 'no sue' laws associated with their legalization.

Be smart, don't be Eric Smith.
