We're a tad late on this honor (us, on time for something?) but we simply have to point out the incredible bravery of a local resident hero. North Bergen resident Angelica Mercado pulled a truck driver from his burning rig and when she noticed he was on fire, used her coat to put out the flames.
Simply amazing.
Last November 20th (before Johnny even got here) on the New Jersey Turnpike, Mercado witnessed the accident, pulled the driver from the truck, doused the flames AND then drove him to University Hospital in Newark. For her incredible heroism Angelica yesterday was awarded the prestigious 2009 Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference. With the award comes a $50,000 prize, a well earned prize at that.
It's easy sometimes to comment on the blatant stupidity of our more colorful citizens, often we don't take enough time to honor the good ones. Angelica, dinner at the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park in NYC is on Johnny, drop him a line.....
